South Korea Travelogue (Seoul & Jeju)
We started off the day with hands on Korean culinary lessons at Food & Culture Academy, piping hot stone rice with steamboat lunch, exploring the Grévin wax museum and off to Jeju for the Teddy bear museum.
We were really honoured and lucky to have met and interacted with the President and Founder of Food & Culture Academy, Ms Kim Soo Jin. Some of her food directing works include King and the Clown, Le Grand Chef, The Royal Tailor, That Winter the Wind Blows and many more!

In Korea, Setting the Table With Tradition
Seoul may be a glitzy high-tech capital, but honoring dining tradition is central to Korean culture. Ceramicist Yi Yoon-Shin and carpenter Sol Yi-Hwan create stunning porcelain dishes and wood furniture, respectively, that combine old materials and craftsmanship with modernity. Together, they set the table with tradition.

Although North Korea and South Korea are neighboring states, life in these two regions are far from being the same. North Korea’s residents are left in the dark about everything, from what’s really going on in the rest of the world to the dire state of their own lives. They’re not allowed to have freedom of speech or the freedom to express themselves through their clothing, which is the complete opposite from their neighbors down south. If you’d like to see even more differences between North and South Korea, make sure to watch this video!

Hongdae Time Lapse Video (Koreans, foreigners, shopping, culture) (홍대앞) Seoul, Korea
In this travel video we visit one of the most popular areas in Korea for university students, young adults and indie culture seekers in Seoul, Korea known as Hongdae -- 홍대앞. This is the first neighborhood I ever visited in Seoul, when I came on an independent journey, way back in 2004 to see -- whether or not -- I would like to teach English in South Korea after completing my University degree. It made quite an impression upon me then and it still does to this day. So much has changed in the Hongdae since I first arrived. The guest house where I met some of the first long-term backpackers I had ever encountered is no longer in operation. Many of the stores, clubs, bars and street vendors that I used to frequent have since left; however, the spirit of the area remains the same and it's as popular as ever.

What can you expect to find in Hongdae? The area is full of restaurants, shops, cute cafes & vintage boutiques. It's also a great place to view artsy mural paintings. It's the kind of neighborhood where you can watch indie music being performed while having a bite for lunch at the park. If you feel a little peckish, the plethora of street food stalls that line many of the busiest streets will cover your every need. Fancy a quiet or quirky cafe? Two of my favorite cafes are located in Hongdae and it shouldn't come as a surprises that both involve animals. For those interested try visiting a cat cafe or dog cafe in the area.
In this travel video we try to capture some of the hustle and bustle by taking time lapse video from several different vantage points in Hongdae:

The Hongdae Area (홍대앞) is a region in Seoul, South Korea near the Hongik University, after which it is named. It is known for its urban arts and indie music culture, clubs and entertainments. The area is located in Mapo-gu in the western end of Seoul, stretching from Seogyo-dong to Hapjeong-dong. Hongdae (홍대) is an abbreviation of Hongik Daehakgyo, the Hongik University (홍익대학교). The term 'hongdae' is usually used in regards to the Hongik University which has one of the nation's top fine arts colleges in South Korea.
Hongdae area is known for its indie spirit, urban street arts and underground band musicians.
The area provides street art festivals and performances, as well as music concerts by independent artists and mainstream entertainers.
One of the most popular areas in Korea for students to come is a place called Hongdae, which is near a university called Hongik University and several other prominent universities in Korea. What I'm going to show you now are a series of time-lapses from different places in Hongdae and you're going to get a sense of just how busy it is - how much hustle and bustle, how much shopping. 100,000 foreign students changing Korean university environment
외국인 유학생 10만명 시
There was once a time when seeing a foreign student in your class was the unimaginable for the average Korean students.
Today, this country has an international student population of nearly 100-thousand - a ten fold increase from ten years ago.
This may be a thumbs-up for cultural diversity and people-to-people exchange... but it′s also a source of tension in other areas.
Our News Feature tonight with Kwon Jang ho.
″Here at Hanyang University, there are around 2,200 foreign students, about 10-percent of whom are from Muslim nations. And to cater to their specific needs, and to make them feel more comfortable, the school has been offering halal options since 2013.″
Not only is halal food at this cafeteria enjoyed by students of this university, but is enjoyed by students from other schools, as well.
″How′s the food?″
″Yea, great, great. Did you have some? It′s amazing, believe me.
As the guy says, the previous who studied here, they suffered a lot because they couldn′t have a lot of halal food, and stuff like that. If they want to eat some, they have to go far away.″
″I′m here at one of Kyung Hee University dorms where over the 50% of the rooms are given out to foreign students. Kyung Hee University has over 3,000 foreign students. That′s the most among Korean universities. Not only does the school provide housing, they also offer Korean language lessons, and Korean cultural history lessons... so they can integrated to Korean life faster.″
″Oh it′s really fun for them I think. Generally the reaction is very positive. We like to give students some more informal ways to interact with Korea culture, to learn about Korean culture, and to introduce their culture more broadly to the campus community.″
The increase in the number of international students in Korea and its impact can be seen outside the school campus, as well.
This real-estate firm has a particular customer base - foreign students looking for studios in the vicinity... as it is located nearby four major universities in Seoul.
The firm′s website can be found in four different languages: Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese.
″The number of international students has been on the rise. The supply of housing has been growing as well as there are now more new or redeveloped apartments in the market. Landlords are also getting more used to the idea of foreign tenants which is why more international students are moving into this area.″
Looking at the demographics of international students in Korea by nationality... the largest number of students come from China... making up over 61-percent of the total. That is more than 60-thousand in number.
″Currently the demographic is skewed. But I think we need to think of this as a starting point as Korea attracts more students from abroad. Eventually, the numbers will even out between different countries.″
So, how do students feel about the changes brought about

Living in Korea
Looking back on my time in Korea, I'm filled with fond memories. There are many things about Korea which continue to dazzle, confound, irritate and me. Overall, I know if it weren't for my own confusion of where I want to be in my work life, I could easily have extended my time there.
There's many things which I fell in love with about Korea, from food, Korean culture, the tons of Korean festivals (seems they have one practically every month), my BB cream and beauty care products, technology and the list goes on. It's a relatively safe country with a low cost of living and yet high quality of life. Due to the fact I had a rent free apartment and the cost of living was low, I was able to save over $10,000 of my salary (after expenses and vacation trips), to produce my travel fund for a seven month backpacking trip and more. At the moment, I've still got money in the bank for a couple more trips.
.
Marrying Korea: Turning from traveler to expat
There's a huge difference between travelers and expats. I don't like to say it, but there is.
There's many ways to fall in love with Korea if you live there. However, if you asked me if I loved it when I was going through it on a daily basis, I might answer differently. I both, loved it and not. Like the acclimatizing process goes with any country, life in Korea wasn't without its rough bumps (and I've certainly bitched here about those). It was my first year living abroad and although I'm a traveler, who loves the challenge of adapting to foreign cultures, this was my first time doing so on a long-term basis, I didn't have a helpful Korean co-teacher and language barriers pose small frustrations.
However, as bad some of my times felt, I still always felt privileged to be living in Korea. I did not regret my experiences one bit.
Why I chose EPIK vs a Hagwon
I was contracted with EPIK, but I also worked briefly at a hagwon in Seoul. I still prefer EPIK, for many reasons.
If you're reading this, then you've probably also already read a handful of rants about hagwons and that some can be shady. Before choosing EPIK, I read a lot of those too. To put everything into perspective, everything is in the luck of the draw in Korea. I've met people who both, loved and hated teaching in a hagwon. Same is true of EPIK. The choice depends on which structure fits best for you.
Stable schedule & Accountability

The Pros of a Hagwon
Unfortunately, this post favors the EPIK environment. I enjoyed being a part of it and I'm a better teacher because of it. But obviously, there are advantages to working in a hagwon system also, or people wouldn't want to work there.
Potentially better salaries
Freedom: No 40 hour week

We recently went through the process of applying to hagwons in Seoul. Hagwons ( 학원) are private academies that parents pay for their children to study at after regular public school hours. It is like legit school with textbooks, homework, grades, tests, etc. Sadly, Korea's society is very competitive, so hagwons have become a huge industry with different subjects available on every street.
The process for applying to a hagwon is much quicker than EPIK, but it was a lot more stressful because of how fast it was. From interviewing with our new school to accepting the job, it took about a week. Of course, applying to just one school isn't a good idea, so we had a lot of emails, phone calls, and interviews happening within a short period of time. Also, there is a dark side to hagwon hiring which Chen will be highlighting in her own future video. Stay tuned!

Steamy Pork Ribs Stew Hot Pot (Day 17)
Click to SUBSCRIBE:
Watch more Korean food videos:
On Day 17 of our trip to South Korea, we took a day trip to Jeongeup and visited the old house of Gim Dong-su, had a fantastic bowl of pork ribs stew, and a healthy Korean herbal tea.
00:24 Gim Dong-su House - This is a historical preserved home of Gim Dong-su who was a wealthy man. You can walk around his house and see how the elite formerly lived in Korea. Also, next door there is the Gwon Beon Culture and Art Academy, and we saw some traditional dance and enjoyed some traditional Korean tea.
5:11 Paepijeong (배비정) Restaurant - For lunch we drove over to a city called Jeongeup and went to a restaurant to eat pork ribs stew. The restaurant was old Korean style with the wonderful barrel can tables. It took a few minutes to prepare our food because the entire hot pot of pork ribs stew was made from scratch as we ordered it. It was well worth it, the meat was good and the mixture of all the ingredients was delicious and home tasting. Price - 10,000 Won ($8.68) per person.
9:31 Mu Du Rang - 7,000 Won ($6.08) per cup - Ssanghwa cha (쌍화차) - Jeongeup is famous throughout South Korea for its healthy herbal teas and drinks made from herbs. So we stopped at a cafe and had a delicious healthy tea that was made with twenty different ingredients.
12:53 Naejangsan National Park - 3,000 Won ($2.60) - Naejangsan National Park is a national park in South Korea that’s famous for its maple trees. We walked around for a while and visited the temple. Again, the nature in Korea is beautiful, and the maple trees, in full green and yellow colors, were beautiful.
14:45 Sangchu Twigim (상추튀김) Restaurant - For dinner we drove back to Jeonju and we went to a Korean snacks food restaurant called Sangchu Twigim (상추튀김). We ordered some of the most popular Korean snacks including gimbap, twigim, and some fish soups. The food was pretty good, but honestly I’m not a huge fan of Tteokbokki. Total price - 17,000 Won ($14.76) for everything.
