???????? CLIMBING TEPOZTECO in the STUNNING TEPOZTLAN! | Ideal DAY TRIP from MEXICO CITY!
???????? TEPOZTLAN, MEXICO - Hola amigos and welcome to another Mexico video! This time we head from Cuernavaca to the Pueblo Magico of Tepoztlan, a few hours south of Mexico City.
It was only a rushed trip for me as I was sick on the day I originally panned to go, but I still got to explore the town and climb Tepozteco up to an Aztec pyramid dating back to the 13th Century!
It wasn't the most spectacular thing to do in Mexico and it was slightly strenuous due to altitude but it's still worth a day trip from Mexico City if you're in the area!
Tepoztlan is also well known for plenty of pulquerias and various flavours of ice cream!

Tepoztlan a Antigua- An Artist Abroad- Episode 5
Day 8- Tezpotlan a Chiapas (San Cristobal)
Today started out early. I had been talking to Kyle (my facebook friend in Chiapas) and realized that he lived REALLY far away from Tezpotlan. He also lived REALLY far from Belice, so I needed to make a decision. In the end, this trip is more about people and experiences rather than only focusing on the sites, so I decided to give Belice the Axe and headed to Chiapas to see Kyle and his family!
The map estimated the ride to be about 12 hours, but my goal was to knock about an hour off of that if possible and get there prior to dusk. I snapped a couple of photos in Tezpotlan and I was off.
Traffic was unusually busy I thought for being that far away from the city, but I really dont know anything at all about what is normal because it is Mexico and I have never been here.
It was pretty daunting riding that long in a day after already having so many long days, but I like to ride the bike a lot and I think that is what makes it fun for me. I sometimes get in this bad habit of trying to cut time off the expected arrival on my maps. A minute here and there adds up, but it also leads to me never stopping and almost never having lunch. It works out lol.
I rode and rode. I would pass cars, trucks, etc. Moving along making progress. I moved at a good speed and was still able to see the beautiful country. I was surprised at how clean and beautiful it was. I rode towards Veracruz before heading south to Chiapas. As I was leaving I passed a large mountain that looks like a gorilla head, I didnt take a picture, but I do have videos from that section of the ride. I also passed a lot of signs that said they do photo radar/ tickets, but I never once saw a camera in place. I kind of think they paid the money for the signs but not the equipment. They also do cut outs of police cars so people think they are doing radar checks.
Shortly after seeing the gorilla mountain, I noticed the other mountains had snow on them, so I pulled over for a picture of that. Luckily I pulled over just before a speed trap where an officer was out with his radar. I have never seen them pursue anyone though, so maybe he was doing it for science? Who knows?
Further down the road I saw a really cool bridge that had orange cables for the suspension cables. I wanted to pull over and get a good shot, but was unsure if the road would give me the angle. I told myself I wouldnt stop unless I could get a good picture. I saw an exit and took a chance. It turned out that there was a nice little view point down below, so I ended up getting a picture.
After that I rode and rode. I got some great videos riding into/ through Chiapas, and some even more amazing videos riding around San Cristobal.
Finally I made it to Kyle's house. Kyle and his wife have been running an orphanage here in town and are basically the good Samaritans of Mexico. They have taken care of many children, and even though they kids keep their hands full, they still invite travelers (like me) into their home to recover from the long journey. Kyle invited me to dinner when I arrived, so we went for Lebanese food. As he drove me around the city he explained to me how San Cristobal has become a food capital for Mexico. They have so many incredible places to eat.
Once we finished with our food we headed back and Kyle let me sit around while he did an oil change on my bike! It blew my mind away how kind he was! I would recommend him to all of you weary travelers, but it sounds like he just found a new job back in America, so they are getting ready to move home with all of their kids!
I am very grateful for people like Kyle and his family. They are the reason that I love to travel and meet people. Their kindness helps so many people, and they do it without expectation of any type of recompense.
Alright, well my 11 hours of riding plus hanging out with an amazing family here in Chiapas has gotten the best of me. Bed time.
Kickstarter film campaign, please help! Cooperative farm in Mexico's mountains- Ed Dooley
Please consider being a Kickstarter backer for this great project. See the link at the bottom for all the rewards.
I produce video projects about sustainability, including projects with authors, Eric Toensmeier, Perennial Vegetables, Michael Phillips, Holistic Orcharding, Eliot Coleman, Year 'Round Vegetables Production, Sandor Katz, Fermentation Workshop, and many more.
I'm producing a new project, which will be published by Chelsea Green Publishing, about an amazing cooperative farm, Las Cañadas, in the sub-tropical highlands of Mexico. Bill McKibben, environmentalist & 350.org founder, and author Julia Alvarez (How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, Yo!, etc.), who also owns a sustainable coffee farm in her native Dominican Republic, both have nice things to say about my project in the videos (link below) of our Kickstarter campaign for the English film version.
The people of the coop are restoring the cloud forest, decimated by decades of cattle farming, providing all their own food using permaculture and polyculture principles, and producing their building materials and energy locally. They conduct year 'round intensive workshops for people from all over Mexico and around the world. Our project includes English and Spanish language versions of the book and DVD. All the information about our project is in the link below. I hope you'll consider helping get the word out about Las Cañadas.
Thanks!

You won't believe the beauty of Michoacán, Mexico
Today we explore Mexico's great state of Michoacan, seeing the National Park of Uruapan and the capital city Morelia. Both of them turned out to be beautiful stops, in very different ways.
Parque Nacional Uruapan is one of the most naturally beautiful places I've visited in Mexico. It's full of waterfalls and lush forest.
Morelia is a classic colonial city that completely surprised us with its beautiful and clean downtown. We're surprised, not to find such a nice city in Mexico (because Mexico has many great cities) but because I had not heard of many people visiting Morelia before.
I really think Uruapan and Morelia are both very underrated destinations, and should be considered if you are planning a trip through Mexico. Travel safely, as I am aware that there are parts of Michoacan where violence is an issue. But we had no issues whatsoever on this trip through a truly beautiful part of Mexico.
Thanks to the whole team at Viajes Guau for having us on this adventure. Viajes Guau is a tour company based in Queretaro, Mexico.

HOW TO LOVE CUERNAVACA - LAND OF ETERNAL SPRING, MEXICO
My mom is staying in Cuernavaca to get away from the winter. She has no tie to it and neither do we, but she is up for the adventure in discovering this land of eternal spring just one hour south of CDMX.
Luna and I went out to meet her for the first week and take a look at this Pueblo Magico that was once an expat mecca outside of the city.

MEXICO: MEXICO CITY: INDIAN RIGHTS CONFERENCE BEGINS
Spanish/Nat
Mexico's Indian Rights Conference kicked off Tuesday without the presence of the Zapatista rebels.
The rebels- who have vowed to attend the four-day meeting- face arrest if they show up in Mexico City.
The Indian Rights Conference will discuss ways of improving the lot of Mexico's indigenous populations especially a proposal for the autonomy of their communities.
Participants in Mexico's Indian Rights Conference showed up in their traditional garments.
But this man took his off to protest against the organisers' refusal to let him speak at the conference.
Jose Luis Chavez Romero belongs to the Indian community of Tepoztlan in Morelos state.
He had recently lost his job and wanted to air his discontent in front of his fellow Indians.
When organisers refused him a chance to speak, Chavez stripped, grabbed a guitar and started singing to the astonishment of those present.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
This is the way Mexico has left us, naked, in misery. This cannot be. I call this act social aesthetics.
SUPER CAPTION: Jose Luis Chavez Romero, Protester
Chavez got dressed afterwards but he did not regret taking his clothes off.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
I think that singing nude is a different, creative way of expressing my ideas. I don't kill or hurt anyone by doing this.
SUPER CAPTION: Jose Luis Chavez Romero, Protester
The four-day conference will discuss the plight of Mexico's indigenous people most of whom live in severe poverty.
The main issue on the agenda will be the autonomy of the indigenous communities.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
We are going to be dealing with Indigenous demands the government has so far refused to consider, such as the constitutional right that grants free travel to all Mexicans, acknowledgement of regional autonomy, and also acknowledgement of the Indigenous autonomous judicial systems.
SUPER CAPTION: Carlos Vega Torres, Meeting Organiser
Under autonomy the communities would have their own police and would report directly to the governor of the state where the community is located.
A law of self-determination was negotiated by the Zapatista rebels during peace talks with the government.
But the authors of the law were not present at the conference inauguration.
The government warned that any rebels who tried to leave Chiapas for Mexico City would be arrested.
Zapatista delegates said they would attend regardless of the government's threat.
The rebels have not shown up yet but they were expected to make an appearance at least for Friday's closing ceremony.
A government delegation is meeting with Zapatista leaders to try to persuade them not to leave their hideout unless they become an official political force.
The Zapatista uprising brought the issue of Indian rights back into the government's agenda.
The rebels- mostly Maya Indians- are demanding a series of economic, social and political reforms.
Most Mexican Indians are illiterate and have little access to education and health services.
They also suffer from police abuse- an issue highly criticised by local and international human rights groups.
Delegates from the Indian communities will send their proposals to the Mexican Congress in a bid to find government-sponsored measures to improve their lot.

Spiritual Adventures To Sacred Sites In Mexico: The Return Of Quetzlcoatl
Follow the path of Quetzalcoatl as we wind our way, like a the serpent, through the sacred sites of Mesoamerica.
Within the small villages south of Mexico City lies a powerful energy center.
This is a magical land, still holding it's ancient beauty and allure.
The Return to Quetzalcoatl Sacred Journey takes us into the heart of central Mexico.
Just an hour south of Mexico City, we arrive in the mystical region of Tepoztlan. Known as one of the most magnetically powerful places on the planet, the Mexican government has given Tepoztlan the distinction as a pueblo magico.
Our home for the tour is Centro Haliama, where our gracious host is a beautiful Polish lady by the name of Malgorzata or Malgo for short.
Malgo has created a center here where people come from all over the world to enjoy the energies. Located in Amatlan, the birthplace of the famous Mesoamerican ruler, Quetzalcoatl, Centro Haliama has easy access to the surrounding mountains, streams and sacred places.
Centro Haliama is a place of healing and retreat. It's quiet bungalows and open garden areas give each person the space for solitude when they want it, while it's comfortable accommodations and meeting spaces bring our group together as friends and co-travelers, supporting each other on our journey.
Magnificent and healthy meals are provided by their loving staff. The meals are catered by the local people, using fresh produce from the market and food that was grown and raised in the area.
Centro Haliama is a short walk into the center square of Amatlan, giving the freedom to stroll through town, talk a walk in the hills and canyons, or even catch a combi or collectivo into the bigger pueblo of Tepoztlan.
In our next video we will be exploring some of the sacred sites of the area.

Some street sounds in Mexico! Gordita Man
You may not hear this in a gated community, but I know each one of the moving street vendors by voice now.
This is the Gordita Man. Barbacoa, chicarones, gorditas, y mas.
I'm also always excited to hear the Elotes, Elotes, Elotes guy come around. There's also a Tamales guy and a Pan guy. You gotta love it!
I don't eat all the street food but I just love to see and hear them.

Concrete Pipes Transformed Into Tiny Homes Could Be The Future Of Micro Housing
In this day in age, it's kind of hard to find affordable housing that's actually decent. Because of that, tiny houses have been popping up all over the world. People have managed to make homes out of shipping containers and even wood pods in the shape of eggs! Tiny houses aren't just good for your pocket, they're super cute, as well. Recently in Hong Kong, a new type of tiny house has been revealed, and you won't believe how truly tiny this one is!
Architect, James Law, came up with an absolutely genius idea. He knew that there was a huge housing problem in Hong Kong, so he began brainstorming solutions for the overcrowding. What he has come up with will blow your mind!
James' company, James Law Cybertecture figured out how to re-purpose cement pipes that are usually used for construction. Their new tiny house, the OPod Tube House, was designed to be an affordable housing option for those that struggle with housing costs.
The OPod Tube Houses are the perfect size. The tubes are meant to house one or two people and have approximately 100 square feet of living space. It doesn't have too much elbow room, but all the typical amenities are provided.
The OPod Tubes come with almost everything you would find in a regular-sized home. It has a living room that has a couch that turns into a bed. It also comes with a mini-fridge, food sold separately, of course.
That's not all it comes with, though. It has a second pipe that contains a bathroom, complete with a shower, and plenty of storage space!. They may be a little on the small side, but what else could you possibly need?
James has envisioned something truly beautiful. He pictures entire communities made up of his OPod Tubes. Not only are the tubes practical for economic reasons, they're also pretty convenient when it comes to placement.
James believes the OPod Tubes are perfect for the urban environment. The tubes are a little over eight feet in diameter, which makes them perfect for small, empty spaces.
OPod tubes can be installed in so many different places! Because of their size, and the fact that they're able to be stacked, OPods can be put under bridges or even in alleyways!
Urban setting is also absolutely perfect for these tubes. James found a way to use every space possible. And in today's times, we need to use what we can.
Not only do the Opods require little to no installation, they also fit perfectly together. The cost of installation is pretty cheap, as well.
Each tube costs approximately $15,000! That's only a down payment for a house, or one year's rent.
They're perfect for a young couple trying to get on their feet, or an older person trying to relax and not worry about cleaning a whole lot.
OPod Tubes can help tremendously in cities that have the common problem of overcrowding. And with the rising costs of housing, OPod could provide homes for everyone in need.
