We took the Tallink Ferry from Helsinki to Ballin at 10:00 am and arrived by 12:00pm
The ferry was a huge 9 floor cruise ship and the cost for the one day return trip tickets was 65 euros.
We departed by 8:30pm (20:30)
The ferry ride was very smooth and most people sat inside and drank beer or wine which was purchased from the onboard restaurant.
I suggest to get there early and find a seat as soon as possible, because many people had no seats and sat on the floor (some slept).
There is free wifi on board.
The walk from the harbor where the boat docked to the Old town was about 15 minutes and very easy, just follow the signs.
Old Town Ballin is not very large and is composed of the upper and lower parts.
You could easily spend 3 hours walking the charming streets exploring the medieval history.
try to make the walking tour (they have several free ones by searching Google).
Estonia uses the Euro as currency and although things are expensive, they are not as expensive as Finland.
We ate at the Pegasus Restaurant, I suggest the beer bread and the wild game plate.
Visit the oldest cafe in Tallinn, called the Maiasmokk. It's a little pricey but a really fantastic interior. Sit by one of the two windows, or visit the second floor (upstairs).
Drop by the Aptek (pharmacy) which is the oldest continuous running pharmacy in Europe. The ceilings are original so make sure to look up.

Tallinn , the capital of Estonia, lies on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, only 70 km (43 mi) south of Helsinki. At the historical and medieval heart of the city is the hill of Toompea, covered in cobbled streets and filled with medieval houses and alleyways. The lower town spreads out from the foot of the hill, still protected by the remnants of a city wall. Around the city wall is a series of well-maintained green parks, great for strolling.
Medieval Old Town. Excellently preserved, built in the 15-17th centuries. This compact area is best explored on foot.
View to the Tallinn old town
Viru Gate, (Entrance to Viru Street). This section of town is known as All-Linn or Lower Town, as it's where the merchants and artisans of old Tallinn lived. Today, Viru is still Tallinn's trendiest shopping street and the entire All-Linn is the busiest (and most touristy) bit of Tallinn.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. a classic onion-domed 19th-century Russian Orthodox church that has become a touristy symbol of the city, to the annoyance of some who regard it as a symbol of oppression. It was almost demolished in 1924 during Estonia's first brief spell of independence, but the Soviets left it to moulder and it has been restored to its former glory.
The REAL Highlights Of Estonia (DON'T MISS This Near Tallinn!)
Do you know anything about Estonia, except that its capital is Tallinn? We were invited by Rein, a great Estonian guy (who picked us up while we were hitchhiking) who kindly offered to show us around the 'real Estonia' around Paldiski, a beautiful city on Estonia's Baltic coast.
The rugged coastline, steep cliffs, beautiful forests and the highest lighthouse in all of Estonia make Paldiski's surroundings a place where you can experience the truly local life of Estonia. But, the COOLEST experience we had was to visit Rummu Karjaar, which is a flooded mine / previous underwater soviet prison camp. The camp and mine flooded so quickly, the buildings and the machines are still in the water.
We also tried THE hangover cure famous amongst Estonians: Solyanka, a thick and delicious meat soup.
Paldiski is a Baltic Sea port town in the north west of Estonia and has about 4000 inhabitants. Before 1994, this little port town was a busy Soviet military base, home to nuclear rockets and submarines. Nobody was allowed to access it before 1994, so if you're looking for something 'different', this is your place for a day trip.
If you are going to visit Tallinn, you should really visit a few other places in Estonia as well so you can discover typical life outside the capital. You can take the direct bus from Tallinn to Paldiski, which takes about 1 hour and it costs 3 euro.
Thanks a lot to Rein, who picked us up while we were hitchhiking somewhere in Estonia. He kindly offered to show two strangers around in his hometown. Getting to hang out with you was a highlight of our trip, Rein!

Tallinn is a lovely Baltic city and a great place to start if you're hoping to explore the Baltics. It's affordable, offers plenty of do for visitors, and it's an easy ferry from Helsinki or a quick bus to Riga.
The well-preserved Old Town is picturesque and from the hill you're able to take advantage of 360-degree panoramic views of Tallinn down below.
Despite being a fairly budget-friendly travel destination Tallinn still isn't a popular city on the tourist route in North-Eastern Europe. This means you'll find more Europeans walking around the city versus North Americans. This helps to keep prices relatively low as well as giving English-speakers a fairly off-the-beaten-path experience.
I only had 3 days in Tallinn although I can't wait to return and spend more time exploring the city!

During our Helsinki trip, we decided to see Tallinn and do a day tour since it's just two hours away via Tallink Megastar. Summer time nga dun but it was still super chilly and windy (super far from our summer in the Philippines hahaha). I fell in love with Tallinn's charm-- the old cobblestones, castles and passage ways were absolutely breathtaking. We even got to try traditional Estonian dishes and it was delicious! I hope you enjoy watching this short video.

Tallinn in 48 hours (Estonia)
Tallinn, Estonia.
Tallinn was the second destination of our trip and we spent there 2 days in the capital of Estonia.
During our visit in Tallinn the weather was really nice and sunny either.
In Tallinn there are many interesting things to see and to do:
St. Olaf’s Church, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallin old town, Pikk Tanav, St. Catherine’s Passage, Toompea Cathedral, Raekoja square (Town Hall Square), Paks Margareeta, Kiek in de Kok, Russalka Memorial, Kadriorg Park, Palace and Art Museum, the creative city Telliskivi Loomelinnak (on Saturday there is the Flea Market), the Estonian Maritime Museum, Lennusadam (Seaplane Harbour).
If you enjoy drinking, you could try the traditional liqueur: Vana Tallinn.

How to Spend 48 Hours in Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, Estonia is a popular day trip from Helsinki, thanks to a high-speed two hour ferry connecting the two capitals. Tallinn is more than a day-trip kind of town though. I would recommend spending at least an evening, if not two, in Estonia’s capital city because there is more than enough to explore! This video covers my recommendations for how to spend 2 full days in Tallinn.
