BEST Food in Malaysia - ULTIMATE STREET FOOD TOUR in Penang | George Town
Asam Laksa, Char Koay Teow, Cendol, Ais Tingkap, Pasembur, Wantan Mee and more... I try it all!!! If you don't try street food while visiting George Town (Penang Island, Malaysia), then you haven't been there; it's a must! The Penang cuisine is ranked as one of the best in Asia. Furthermore, Penang, with George Town being the absolute epicentre, has also been voted as the number one culinary destination in 2014 (by Lonely Planet).
Penang food is influenced by several Asian countries, mainly India and China, and therefore, is a mix of traditional Malay, Indian and Chinese dishes with Char Koay Teow and Asam Laksa being the most famous dishes. Asam Laksa has even made it to the World's 50 best foods compiled by CNN travel.
There's more to Penang food than just the eating; the atmosphere contributes to the amazing experience. Watching the food being prepared and cooked amid the bustling streets of the beautiful historical core of George Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site), not to mention the sounds and smells, plays an important role in the experience.
That being said, in this episode, you will be joining me for a full day of eating incredible street food in the food capital of Malaysia. I've also included the cost of each dish/meal to provide you with a somewhat relevant answer to the question: how expensive is Malaysia?ENJOY!
Lastly, George Town is a beautiful city with wonderful people. George Town exceeded my expectations and, as of today, I hold it as one of my all-time favourite destinations for sure.
FYI: this is the fourth episode in English. My English speaking skills are far from flawless so bear with me :) My channel name, Matvraket, is Swedish for the glutton.

Exploring Penang (Georgetown): Things To Do in One Day
After our trip to Langkawi, we headed to Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. One day we walked around and did all these things in a single day. More coming on:
Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a travel guide as well. Hope you enjoy to!
To begin the day, I started off with a Penang tourist map and located all the places we wanted to go. Since we were staying close to the Georgetown World Heritage Inc., that’s where we first decided to stop. It’s more of an information center, so after just a few minutes we continued on our way to the Chew Jetty, one of the couple of Chinese docks where homes are built over the water. On the way though, we walked through Lebuh Armenian (one of the most famous streets in Penang), past George Town street art, and also briefly stopped at Cheah Kongsi. The Chew Jetty was a nice place to walk around for a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot to do there, but mostly some small souvenir shops and some nice places to take photos.
We continued walking and passed the Queen Victory Lighthouse and then we continued on to Fort Cornwallis, a British built fort, and the only fort in Malaysia - though as they said it wasn’t ever used for battle. I was a little disappointed visiting Fort Cornwallis in Penang because we paid a pretty big entrance fee, but there really wasn’t anything to see inside - I could have seen it all from the outside. Anyway, we continued on walking around Penang, and then circled back past a cathedral. By this time we were getting quite hungry, so we headed into Little India, and then continued to a famous restaurant called Kapitan for tandoori chicken. I didn’t know they were really famous for their rice biryani, but I got a couple pieces of tandoori chicken and naan, it they were both incredible.
In the afternoon, we first stopped at the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, and walked around for a few minutes, and then continued on to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, one of Penang’s main attractions and a place I was really looking forward to visiting. Mr. Cheong, an insanely wealthy Chinese business man built the Blue Mansion and it has now been restored and it’s actually open as a hotel, but they also give a couple of guided tours each day. The tour took 45 minutes, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing I wish is that we could have seen a little more of the Blue Mansion, because unfortunately we didn’t get to see much, but mostly listened to the history of the mansion - still it was worth seeing in Penang.
To finish of one day of things to do in Penang, Georgetown, we visited the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and then lastly we went to Khoo Kongsi. For dinner to end this day in Penang, we went to a restaurant to eat dim sum, and a few other Chinese dishes as well.
Thank you for watching this “things to do in Geogetown, Penang” travel video. Hope you enjoyed it, and hope it will give you some ideas for what to do when you visit. More Penang street food videos coming soon!

Our tour guide, Kevin, was awesome and as we made our way around Penang we learnt a lot about Malaysian history unique to Georgetown - it was a cool way to travel.

MALAYSIAN STREET FOOD, PENANG GEORGETOWN, STREET FOOD IN MALAYSIA, ASIAN FOOD
MALAYSIAN STREET FOOD, PENANG GEORGETOWN, STREET FOOD IN MALAYSIA, Malaysian cuisine consists of cooking traditions and practices found in Malaysia, and reflects the multiethnic makeup of its population.[1] The vast majority of Malaysia's population can roughly be divided among three major ethnic groups: Malays, Chinese and Indians. The remainder consists of the indigenous peoples of Sabah and Sarawak in East Malaysia, the Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia, the Peranakan and Eurasian creole communities, as well as a significant number of foreign workers and expatriates.
As a result of historical migrations, colonisation by foreign powers, and its geographical position within its wider home region, Malaysia's culinary style in the present day is primarily a melange of traditions from its Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and ethnic Bornean citizens, with heavy to light influences from Thai, Portuguese, Dutch, and British cuisines, to name a few. This resulted in a symphony of flavours, making Malaysian cuisine highly complex and diverse.
Because Peninsular Malaysia shares a common history with Singapore, it is common to find versions of the same dish across both sides of the border regardless of place of origin, such as laksa and chicken rice. Also because of their proximity, historic migrations and close ethnic and cultural kinship, Malaysia shares culinary ties with Indonesia,[2] as both nations often share certain dishes, such as satay, rendang and sambal. For a traditional Malay meal, rice is considered the centerpiece of a meal, with everything else considered as an accompaniment, relish or side for the rice. Malay cuisine bears many similarities to Indonesian cuisine, in particular some of the regional traditions from Sumatra. It has also been influenced by Chinese, Indian, Thai and many other cultures throughout history, producing a distinct cuisine of their own. Some regional Malay dishes, such as arisa and kacang pool, are examples of influence from Arab cuisine due to longstanding historical and religious ties. Many Malay dishes revolve around a rempah, which is usually sauteed in oil (tumis) to draw out flavours to form the base of a dish. A dipping relish called sambal is an essential accompaniment for most Malay dishes.
Air bandung.
Air bandung - a cold milk drink flavoured with rose cordial syrup, giving it a pink colour. Despite the name, there is no connection to the city of Bandung in Indonesia. Bandung within this context refers to anything that comes in pairs or is mixed from many ingredients.
Asam pedas - a sour and spicy stew of meat, with the core ingredients being tamarind and chili. Depending on region, tomatoes, lady's fingers, shredded torch ginger bud and Vietnamese coriander (Malay: daun kesum) may also be added. Usually cooked with fish like mackerel or stingray, although some recipes use chicken and even oxtail.
Ayam goreng - a generic term for deep fried chicken, typically marinated in a base of turmeric and other seasonings prior to cooking.

In Penang, Malaysia, the food is the best in Malaysia. Malaysian Food is one of my favourites in Asia due to the diversity of Chinese, Indian, and Malay influence on all of the food, whether the local Malaysian street food in Kuala Lumpur and Penang street food, or whether dining in Mamak stalls like this famous Nasi Kandar joint, you can't go wrong! Penang food is heavenly!
I was lucky enough to meet up with Kyle Le from Kyleledotnet, we enjoyed our meal together and had a great collaboration, you can check out his channel here:
If you want to come to Penang to eat this mind blowing Malaysian cuisine, I suggest trying Nasi Kandar. It is famous all throughout Malaysia, but here in Penang is the birthplace. Many Nasi Kandar restaurants are open 24 hours long to serve those craving spice at any time of day. Nasi Kandar is rice covered in a huge assortment of your selection of fresh Indian curry, available with chicken, beef, mutton, and many vegetables. We ordered a fish head curry as well!
I really want to come back every year to Georgetown to eat and perhaps learn some Malaysian food recipes. In Pulau Pinang (Penang), t he most famous Nasi Kandar restaurants are Nasi Kandar Line Clear or Nasi Kandar Beratur. I visited Line Clear and quite enjoyed the flavour, but I wanted to try a different place that has less hype and still had something to prove. I found Nasi Kandar Deen Maju, address below:
Nasi Kandar Deen Maju, Jalan Gurdwara (Brick Kiln Road)
Jalan Gurdwara, 10150 Penang, Pulau Pinang
Time: 4pm-11pm
I spent 3 weeks eating Penang food and afterwards I didn't want to leave. The food here is good enough for a lifetime. You can dine on Indian cuisine, Indian street food, Chinese, and Malay food every day and you will never get bored with the huge variety of food. If you come to Malaysia, you must eat in Penang and Kuala Lumpur, perhaps even take a Penang food tour or Kuala Lumur food tour from a local. The food hunt is a lot of fun here!
I hope this is helpful for you the next time you go to eat Nasi Kandar! Please leave me a comment down below, it helps a lot.
Thanks again for watching this Nasi Kandar food and travel video!
