Dining in Carcassonne, France
...as we say, when in France, we enjoy our food as the French do... ;)
Actually looks like it was dad who was enjoying most of it ROFL!
My Dinner in Carcassonne
It’s Day 24 of my 100-day trip to Europe, and I’m in Carcassonne, updating the Rick Steves France guidebook with my co-author, Steve Smith.
Surveying this touristy town, we were very happy with the variety of great-value restaurants we recommend in the book. As usual, our favorites are personality-driven. Here at Restaurant L’Escargot, the owner, Thomas, is hustling all night serving his diners. Our challenge is not only to find the good places but to describe each restaurant vividly, so our readers can choose smartly. Eating, soaking the experience in good wine, making friends with the proprietors, and taking notes...it’s tough work, but we manage.

Carcassonne, France: Inside the Cite Fortress
The medieval town had narrow, winding streets with interesting shops, old half-timbered houses, inquisition museums, torture chambers, and restaurants (heavy on cassoulet).
You could walk the ramparts, look down at the immense moat which made it a formidable internal fortress, and gawk at the arrow slits along with the different defenses used by the crusaders. On UNESCO's World Heritage Site, Carcassone's Cite is another don't miss in France.
Carcassonne Part 1 - Exploring La Cite, Eating Cassoulet, and Medieval Jousting!
Video #8: Shot on August 17th 2018
Wow....So much to say Carcassonne. If you like anything middle ages, medieval architecture, or just really cool small labyrinth cobblestone roads that you can lose yourself in...Carcassonne is that city.
The first day we had to carry all of luggage with us for the weekend since we couldn't check into our AirBnB until 7:00pm. It was a long day where we walked probably close to 10 miles. We had our first taste of Cassoulet, which is a regional dish, and it's very hearty and tasty. If you ever find yourself in this region you must try Cassoulet.
We saw a medieval jousting/performance. It was called the Tournois de Chevalerie. My video does not do the performance justice. The actors were really going at it, taking real hard hits and they had some awesome choreography. I was sitting a little too far away to get good video (I wish I was sitting in the center). I also missed some really awesome horse tricks at the end. My battery was getting low so I wanted to conserve it for the rest of the day. I guess I will have them for my own personal memories =p. Maybe Maggie will upload a few photos of the trick riding on her instagram: instagram.com/cogswell_creations/
Just walking along the outer ramparts and peering out upon the city was really cool. It almost made me feel like a medieval archer just guarding the fortress from invaders. There is about 3km of ramparts to walk along, and 52 towers . Also, take note of the architecture. You will notice that there are different types of architecture of the fortress since it was built and rebuilt throughout a long period of time. Originally it was built around 100BC by the Romans and changed hands many times by different viscounts and kings. Eventually it became part of the Kingdom of France in 1247. Also another fun fact was that the Catholic Inquisition took place here and one of the towers is known as The Inquisition Tower.

Perpignan, France - Cassanyes Flea Market
The Cassanyes Flea Market takes place from Wednesday to Sunday mornings only. We stumbled on it after getting hopelessly lost in the maze of medieval Perpignan streets and were so happy we did!
Paella, umpteen varieties of olives, chickens turning on the spit, cheese, fresh fruit and vegetables, oysters, mussels and so much more. Even although we'd just finished eating breakfast, drool was dripping and salivary glands working overtime. Never know what you are going to come across. Food, glorious food....

Commercial Road is located between Edinburgh Road, near Portsmouth Guildhall and Lake Road, close to Portsmouth and Southsea Railway Station.
This area has the wide variety of shops that you would expect in a city centre location, boutiques, music, books, department stores, sports, photographic, banks, building societies and food.
The northern end of Commercial Road is regularly used by market traders selling a wide variety of different goods from their stalls.

Hotel Barging in France - An Excursion to Narbonne Market. For more information please visit: - Our hotel barges gently introduce you to some of Europe's finest scenery, fascinating history and local culture.
Our classic Canal du Midi cruises include a visit to Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Explore the indoor market at the hub of this bustling town, where you will have time to shop or simply absorb the relaxed atmosphere.
Narbonne was the first town outside of Italy to be colonized by the Romans and grew to be the second largest town in Gaul. Once a coastal port, it prospered until the sea receded in the Middle Ages. It is now eight miles inland. Today Narbonne has a well-restored medieval quarter. The Cathédral St-Just is the tallest cathedral in southern France and is known for its beautiful stained glass and tapestries.

first mpressions of Montreal and AWESOME french food
#firstimpressions #montreal #frenchfood
After a 6 and a half hour drive, we arrive in Montreal and check into our Airbnb, we are starving and excited to explore the city, and instead of looking up what there is to do in the area, we decide to go on a walk and see what we stumble across.
Just walking around this city, we feel like we are in a totally different country,.... and that's because we are. To explain, we have been to Toronto very many times, and although we know we are in a different country there, it also feels and seems familiar to us in comparison to the USA.
Everyone spoke French, and when they realized we only spoke English, they swiftly switch to English with a Canadian accent.
Montreal seems to have retained a lot of the historic buildings, and the architecture around felt like a mix of French and British.. art deco mixed in with the Gothic and the modern buildings.
It was clean, and the people incredibly polite, friendly and helpful.
We find ourselves in a creepy and empty shopping mall underground, and work up huge appetite.
The restaurant around the corner from our Airbnb looks good, so we pop in to have, what we didn't know then, to be the best meal we had in Montreal.

Dinner At (Hipster/Old School) Taix French Restaurant, Echo Park
The Taix Family are the third and fourth generations of a family of sheepherders and bakers from the “Hautes-Alpes” in southeastern France who immigrated to Los Angeles around 1870.
In 1912 Marius Taix Sr. built a hotel called the Champ d’Or in downtown Los Angeles’ French quarter. In 1927, Marius Taix Jr. opened Taix French restaurant within the hotel serving chicken dinners for 50 cents at long “family-style” tables. Diners could choose private booth service for an extra quarter. Taix’s novel food, unique service and affordable prices make it a Los Angeles institution.
The present location opened in 1962 and continues to be a family affair. Family style service has given way to private booths, but Taix French restaurant remains faithful to the famed tureen of soup, fresh french bread, and abundant portions of French country cuisine at affordable prices. The restaurant dynasty is carried on by Marius’ son, Raymond Taix, who has made sure that the character of the restaurant has remained unchanged, and his son Michael, whose passion for wines has resulted in an extensive, award winning wine list.
Taix Restaurant is proud of its’ vintage staff; many can boast of serving more than three generations. We look forward to serving you and your family for many generations to come.
