MADURAI Food Tour - Idiyappam (Rice Noodle) - Ragi (Finger Millet) Puttu
South India is the one place where you get some of the tastiest and healthiest street food. Yes, healthy! Our trip to Madurai was truly enlightening and beautiful. After our trip to Jallikattu, where we experienced Pongal celebrations with the locals and got to taste some amazing food, we made our way to the city.
Beginning our journey in the Spice Bazaar along with our lovely host Praveena, we visited S V Sweets. Here, we tried a sweet dish called Adhivarasam which is made from a rice flour and jaggery, shaped like a doughnut and deep fried like one too. As very well put by our host, “it is shaped like doughnut, tastes even better.” This is an authentic Tamilian dessert and is sold only for Rs. 6. So if you’re in the mood for some desi style doughnuts, this is your best bet!
Our next stop was Gopu Iyengars Tiffin Centre. This place is a century old and is known best for its Vellai Appam. Located right next to the Meenakshi Temple, this 100 year gem serves its meal traditionally on Banana leaves, that are easily disposable as well as hygienic. The vellai appam is made with rice flour and urad dal and served with coconut chutney, sambhar and a super hot green chilli chutney. The food in Madurai in general is quite hot and pungent, and according to the locals the philosophy behind so much chilli in such hot weather is that ‘you have to eat the heat to beat the beat.’
When in South India, you just cannot ignore a good cup of filter coffee. We went to Visalam Coffee Bar for some delicious and strong filter coffee. This is the kind of coffee that will wake you up from any kind of stupor.
We next walked to a shop called Burma Idiyappam Shop, serving idiyappam from the same spot for 42 years. Idiyappam is made from rice flour that is pressed into noodle form and is topped with coconut shavings and sugar. The dish is super light and healthy, since there is zero oil in it and it is steamed. Later in the day we tried Keppai Puttu, which is basically ragi that is shaped like a cylindrical cake and steamed, then it is topped off with coconut shavings and jaggery. We also tried Keerai and Keppai Vadai. The Keerai Vadai is made with a special kind of herb known Mullumurungai, which is mixed with rice flour and the deep fried. The Keepai Vadai is made with ragi or finger millet, shallots, green chillies and curry leaves, and the deep fried as well. Despite being deep fried in oil the vadai is super light and is not heavy on the palate at all.
We visited the Meenakshi Bhavan for their Special Rawa Dosai that is made with sooji or semolina, carrots, cashews, pepper, chilli, jeera and a bit of desi ghee. The dosai is super crispy and has a beautiful nutty texture to it. What is even better is that it is served with quite a few chutneys so one can take pick and choose between them. Finally we went to Sree Sabreesh for the Adai Avial. This two part dish is truly mouthwatering. The adai is a very healthy lentil dosai which is served with avial- a vegetable dish stewed with a variety of spices and coconut milk. For dessert we tried the Paal Pandiyaram, which is rice balls in sweet coconut milk.
Our journey came to an end with a super healthy, nutrient rich banana. Eating a banana after a heavy meal is a tradition here, so we obliged. Our special thanks to Praveena from Foodies Day Out, it was an absolute pleasure to be in the company of someone who loves and appreciates food as much as we do.

Madurai Food Tour - Madurai PAROTTA - Egg PAAYA - Fishlette (Fish Omelette)
Welcome to the food capital of Tamil Nadu. We had the good fortune to taste a number of unique dishes on our trip down south. So come and discover along with us the delectable food of Madurai.
There are a number of places in Madurai that are just serving cold drinks to battle the hot weather of the region. One such drink is Elaneer Sherbet which is made from coconut water, coconut cream, some syrup and ice. We then visited Sun Lemon Tea Stall, where ironically we had Sukku/Chukku Malli Coffee. This unique drink is supposed to be a cure for cough, containing dried ginger, coriander seeds and fenugreek.
Along the way we tried a few sweets that almost like candies. Sweets like javvu mithai, thaen mithai, sooda mithai or elandha pazham are available in a lot of shops on the streets. Our next stop was Kavannah Parotta Kadai in Natham. Here we tried the iconic deep fried parotta which crushed and topped with mutton gravy and some pieces of dry or chukka mutton along with mint chutney. The crispy and flaky parotta goes perfectly well with the melt-in-the-mouth mutton pieces and gravy.
Later we visited the flower market in Madurai where we tried Valakkai/ Vazhakai Bajji or Plantain Fritters. The plantains are coated with a batter of chickpea flour and spices and then deep fried, the perfect evening snack. We then went to Rani Vilas for some paniyaram omelette, served with rice, mutton, bone marrow and some chutneys. Here we also tried Ratha Poriyal, a dish prepared with goat's blood. After that we tried an interesting drink called Koozh. Another cool porridge drink to enjoy in the hot weather.
We landed at Ajmeer Mahal for quite a wholesome meal. Here we had the ceylon parotta that is very similar to the bengali mughlai parantha; Vazhiyal whoch basically scrambled eggs with spices; and kothu parotta, a blend of minced parotta pieces with curry leaves, onions, spices and eggs. For some more refreshments we went to the KRK Milk Depot. We sweetened our mouth with some milk halwa and some rose milk and badam milk.
In the evening we tried an interesting chaat called egg paaya, which is made from mutta bonda/egg bonda, onion samosa, pattaani gravy and topped with onions. A very refreshing and spicy dish. For all the fish lovers we discovered paradise. At PSA Fish, you get everything that lives in water. We mainly tried Tandoori Fish and prawns, Prawn biryani, fish fingers, fish omelette and a lot more. Finally we came to an end of the food tour with a nice cup of strong coffee at PTR Tea Stall and Snack Bar.

Madurai Street Food - Jil Jil Jigarthanda + Fusion Food (Pizza Dosa & Butter Scotch Dosa)
The temple city of Madurai is best known for its religious festivals, temples and foods. We went on a small binge on one beautiful evening in Madurai, only to discover some supremely delicious dishes.
Our first stop was the Famous Jigarthanda. The drinks being served at this shop are a cool relief to the hot and humid environment of Madurai. The drink that everyone goes for - Jil Jil Jigarthanda, a combination of almond gum, sarasparilla syrup, ice cream, condensed milk, chilled milk and a mystery ingredient. As the name suggests, the drink surely relaxes and cools down your mind, body and heart!
We have a bit of a soft side for Halwa, so we made our way Prem Vilas for some amazing halwa. They also have a variety of freshly made savoury snacks. We got the opportunity to try a number of different halwas which include wheat halwa, almond halwa, carrot halwa and milk halwa. Each had a unique flavour and was truly scrumptious.
Now for some more hogging we landed at Sai Aiyyappan Dosai Kadai, a place which has stood for around 40 years and is known for serving 70 varieties of dosa. They have pizza dosa, garlic dosa, spicy mushroom and for all you sweet-tooths out there, they have butterscotch, chocolate and even a honey dosa. Even though flavour combinations seem a little outlandish, they are on point. We tried a variety of Dosas here and weren't disappointed at all.
Our last and final stop was at the Murugan Idli Shop. Here we tried the Nai Podi Idly which is idly dipped in podi/chilly chutney powder. The speciality of this place is that this marvelous idly is served with four kinds of chutney. The idly are super soft and fluffy. On the whole, the entire dish is just a whole plate of yumminess!

In this episode we start the day at a famous Indian breakfast stall Giani Tea Stall to try kachori, butter bread and chai (120 INR / 1.69 USD). It was so buttery and delicious on a cold morning. Next, we go to the Golden Temple, Harmandir Sahiba, to marvel at its beauty. It was free to enter, but you must cover your head. Then we head deep into OLD Amritsar to taste its history. Our first stop was at Punjabi restaurant Kesar Da Dhaba, where they serve a Punjabi thali (255 INR / 3.58 USD) as well as some regional desserts, kulfi (70 INR / 0.98 USD) and phirni (50 INR / 0.70 USD).
Exploring through the narrow alleys by rickshaw is a lot of fun and we stopped to have a lassi, something you CANNOT MISS on a trip to INDIA! Gian Di Lassi makes them fresh and has a unique Punjabi flavour, although it is very sweet (120 INR / 1.69 USD). Before leaving Old Amritsar, we wanted to savour some meat! We went to Joginder Dhaba for some buttery chicken curry (350 INR / 4.92 USD), and the chef was nice enough to show us all the different meats he had cooking street side.
We were super full on Indian STREET FOOD but we had to make one more stop at the end of the day. We wanted to eat the famous Punjabi fried fish and went to Makhan Fish and Chicken Corner. This place has been around since 1962!!! We ordered their deliciously thick river fish that is fried to perfection (390 INR / 5.48 USD), chicken tandoor (240 INR / 3.37 USD), mutton tikka (420 INR / 5.90 USD) and of course, butter chicken (350 INR / 4.92 USD). MADURAI Food Tour-Idiyappam(Rice Noodle)- Ragi(Finger Millet)PuttuMadurai Best Street Food Factory

Bharma Idiyaappa Shop
E Veli St, Mahal Area, Madurai Main, Madurai, Tamil Nadu 625001
0452 233 8946
45 years oldest shop in madurai Burma Idiyappam Kadai.Shop location Opp to Madurai mission hospital, on the east veli road, near to St. Mary's primary school and Idiyappam is made from rice flour that is pressed into noodle form and is topped with coconut shavings and sugar. On an average, 50 kg of rice flour is used daily for making idiyappam. The shop runs from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. But for Devika, there is no break. She works round-the-clock to make this business a roaring success. She has half a dozen boys working under her, all of whom have been with her for past 45 years. This perhaps reflects her compassion towards her employees. The steaming idiyappam, offered at a cost of Rs.8, is served to customers with coconut milk, sugar and shredded coconut.
Devika akka hard work and perseverance helped her in elevating from the pavement to a shop right in front of the hospital. She did not go for a change in venue and even today she enjoys a high percentage of idiyappam market share.
Till a few years ago, we monopolized the idiyappam market. But now several people have entered the business after sensing big money. But my guarantee of quality keeps me going great despite competition, Devika akka shares with much confidence.
Besides being a successful woman entrepreneur, it is Devika akka dream to provide good education to her children.

MADURAI - THE TEMPLE, PALACE, BANANA'S, IDLI & DOSA HUNT! I loved it! | Madurai Vlog
I spent 2 days in Madurai and really enjoyed the City! I started by going on the 'Once Upon a Time' walking tour with Story Trails which taught me so much about the city and was so interesting.
The next day I went inside the Sri Meenakshi Temple which is the main Hindu temple in Madurai, then I came across the Banana Market which was cool to see, got my sim card working from Airtel as I needed a few one, went to see the Palace and also ate some Idli and Dosa inbetween!
I didn't know what to expect of Madurai but I liked it and think it's a great City to visit!
