Eating Street Food in South America (Ecuador)
In this video, I adventure in a tasty trip in the streets of Ecuador. I will show you how the traditional food is cooked, served and priced. For this experiment I will try to spend $30 in cheap but traditional food.

Ecuador has one of the most delicious food in the world and I invite you to come with me and see it for yourself in the eyes of a Local. Nevertheless, I want to emphasis that Ecuadorian food is cheap in comparison to the USA!

Quito's Central Market: the TASTY & the BIZARRE | Where to Eat in Quito
One of the best places for food in Quito is undoubtedly Mercado Central, or the Central Market. It's conveniently located in the historical district, and it's filled with cheap, traditional Ecuadorian food. Get your breakfast or lunch there and you won't be disappointed.
I took my time exploring the corners of the market, looking for some interesting dishes. I certainly found some. There's a booth that serves a sort of baked cow fetus stew called la bille. If that doesn't sound appetizing, how about some cow udder with rice? The very best thing to eat in the Central Market is corvinas, a crispy fried white flesh fish that's flaky and filling. It comes with roasted potatoes, shrimp ceviche, and some toasted corn and popcorn. It's a lot of food, and for only $6. The fish is the best part, of course. Even if you're not really into fish, try this dish. It's almost closer to fried chicken than it is to the fried fish you'd get with fish and chips.
Even if you're not hungry, pop into Mercado Central if you're in Quito. It has a great history. It's got a lot of interesting things to look at. And it really is one of the best places to watch people. Grab a fresh fruit drink - I recommend the guanabana with some alfalfa, but there are numerous combinations. The lady I went to was really pushing the naranjilla with alfafa. Muy rico!

Ecuador - Quito - typical Ecuadorian food for Bravehearts at Las Tripas
Fog from the grills and the delightful smell of barbecued meat will welcome you while you enter this little village of stands full of bizarre and tasteful treats.
Just take a look at the video: do my fellow Swiss friends enjoy the grilled cow stomach?
At the corner of Lerida and Avenida Ladron de Guevara there is a place for best traditional cuisine called las Comidas or las Tripas and it is a real local spot. Any Taxi driver knows that place.
Some people will only see things like boiled stomach or cow skin or fried blood balls, others will be delighted about the empanadas or the fried fish or the sweet milky corn drink Morocho.
No matter what your preferences are you will find something interesting behind the curtain of nice smelling steam that fills the night sky.
From four pm to late they set up their stands every evening again to showcase what the Ecuadorian cuisine has to offer. From my perspective I loved that place because locals buy and eat here. It is not the Ritz, so only expect a plastic fork, it is the simple life here. It just is what it is: traditional food, a big part of any culture.
You can be almost sure to be the only foreigner and they will thank your visit with big smiles. In case you do not speak Spanish I recommend you to ask an English speaking local to take you there. In any case, do not be scared, nor of the people neither of their food.
A recommendation: ask for Llapingachos (Japingachos) a dish with mashed potato, cheese, meat and sausage and salad and for desert the famous Morocho all for about $3,50.

The Sauce on Every Table in Ecuador | Where to Eat in Quito
Aji sauce is available at almost every restaurant in Ecuador. It's their table sauce of choice, but not every sauce is created equally. From every restaurant to every street food stall, aji sauce is usually house made and it's flavors change based on where in Ecuador you are, what the restaurant specializes in, and more.
Aji is the word used in Ecuador for chili pepper. It's actually a species of pepper - one that's native to South America. The basic aji sauce contains chili peppers, lime, cilantro, and onion. Many cooks will include fruit in their aji sauce. Sometimes bananas, pineapple, mango, etc. In the Sierra regions, around Quito, they often include a fruit that's pretty unique. It's called a tomate de árbol, or tree tomato. It's also referred to sometimes as a tomarillo. It's sort of a sweet tomato. I find the taste difficult to describe, but it adds a nice tanginess to aji sauce. You can expect tree tomatoes to be included in the aji you get with empanadas, hornado, and many other dishes.
If you come to Ecuador and you find the aji sauce to not be to your liking, be sure to keep trying it with every meal. The sauce will sometimes be very spicy, and sometimes not spicy at all.

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia.
Traveling Atlas was created to capture our moments of taking risk, building connections, and seeing the world. We will be staying in each country we visit for about a month in order to experience cultures to our maximum capacity and to inspire others that they can do the same. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.

On day two of their tour of the valleys outside Quito, Ecuador, International Living editors Suzan and Dan go to the local chocho shop in Tumbaco. See the video below for Suzan's verdict on this tasty treat.
Chocho is the bean-like seed of Andean lupine and is a very popular, high-protein food source in Ecuador. It's served a number of ways, from chocho and seafood ceviches on the coast to a straight-up bowl of beans eaten like... beans. In Tumbaco, the local shop serves it up with any garnish you like... onion, tomato, plantain chips, hot sauce, roasted corn, salt, lime... it all tastes good on chocho.
