To eat at farmer's market at Santiago de Compostela (Spain)? Or not?
Mercado de Abastos (Farmer's / Produce market) in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain) is often marked as the best place to eat. [And it is also arguably the second most important site in Santiago (after the cathedral)]. Is it really worth the effort?
If you know constraints, then it might be.

Santiago de Compostela, the capital of the Galicia region, is Northern Spain’s most iconic city. This UNESCO Heritage Site is the final stop on the epic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail; its unique atmosphere, history and cobbled streets draw thousands of visitors each year.
Our visit digs below its surface beauty, to unearth a vibrancy and flavour that few visitors get to experience.
Together we will take a culinary tour of the central farmers’ market where colours and aromas combine to create an intoxicating gastronomic experience. Here you will find only the most succulent fruit and vegetables, freshest seafood and the local delicacy, aged Galician blonde beef.
Santiago de Compostela, Spain: Burt Wolf Travels & Traditions (#606)
BURT WOLF: TRAVELS & TRADITIONS - SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, SPAIN (#606)
Today, sacred travel is more popular than it has been since the Middle Ages. Each year, millions of people travel to the world's holy sites, and one of the most popular destinations is Santiago de Compostela in the Northwest corner of Spain. Burt Wolf tours its 1,000-year-old Cathedral and explains the stories behind its art and architecture and watches an eight-man team swing the world's largest flying incense burner through the structure. We see the world's oldest travel guide, and visit the Hospital of the Kings of Spain that was built in 1499---the world's oldest hotel still in operation. We also call on a jeweler who works in Jet, an ancient gemstone so black that describing it created the phrase jet black to become part of the English language. It is a city that can connect you with the divine.

Ordering Food in Cafes and Bars in Sathentiago de Compostela, Spain
Every region has its own quirks. Santiago de Compostela is a smaller city and the bar/restaurant atmosphere is much more relaxed. If you're away from the touristy areas, you simply walk into a cafe, sit down, and wait staff will get to you whenever - it's mellow, simple, no rush.
It's generally a very friendly atmosphere except for perhaps the more American/English cafes where they're bringing you the bill before you ordered.

10 Most Delicious Galician Dishes
Doing the Camino de Santiago soon? One question we get asked quite often is about the food.
In this post, we have compiled what we think are the 10 most delicious Galician dishes you shouldn't miss on your Camino trip.
1-Octopus
The ultimate Galician traditional dish. You will find it referred to as 'pulpo á feira' (in Galician), 'pulpo a la gallega' (in Spanish) or simply 'pulpo'. Boiled to a perfect point and served with paprika, salt and olive oil, cooking octopus is an art in Galicia. It can't be too hard or too mushy, it has to be just perfect. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of the dish: a great 'pulpeiro' (someone who specialises in cooking octopus) is not that easy to come by!
If you are walking the French Way of the Camino de Santiago via Melide, you should stop at A Garnacha for a taste of delicious octopus. Many pilgrims have recommended it to us.
2-Padrón peppers
The little green peppers from Padrón are quite unique and should be eaten in the right season (Summer). Simply fried and sprinkled with rock salt, they are the food equivalent of the Russian roulette. The Galician expression goes: 'Pementos de Padrón; uns pican e outros non' (some of them are hot and some of them are not). And it is so true: they are mostly perfectly sweet little peppers, but there is always the odd one as hot as a chilli. Many people have their different theories to guess which ones are going to be spicy: is it the ones with the pointy end? would it be the smaller ones? or the larger pepper? the truth is nobody knows but it is all part of the fun.
3-Empanada
Galicians would eat anything in empanada... these savoury pastries or pies come in many fillings and shapes but the most popular ones are filled, of course, with seafood or fish. Cod (bacalao/bacallao), mussels (mejillones/mexillóns) and tuna (bonito) are some of the most popular empanadas. The quality of your empanada will depend on the bakers, the type of pastry, the quality of the filling... but they are all delicious.
4-Caldo Galego
beware vegetarians! Caldo galego (Galician broth) might look like a harmless veggie-friendly dish with its cabbage, green leaves and beans but it tends to be 'seasoned' with pork lard and sometimes with other types pork meat. Caldo is a hearty, homely Galician dish, cooked in every home, specially in winter time.
5-Squid: all size and shapes!
Crispy squid rings (calamares or luras in Galician) and baby squid (chipirones) are cooked in a light batter and simply eaten with a sprinkle of lemon juice. Hot or cold, they are one of the most delicious snacks.
6-Queixo de Tetilla
Cheese lovers might not be familiar with Galician cheese, mainly softer, mildly cured cow cheeses, usually eaten with quince jelly as a dessert. Galicia's most characteristic and unique looking cheese is called 'queixo de tetilla' (meaning 'little breast') for its pointy shape. On your way to Santiago, along the French Way, you will pass Arzúa, famous for its pointy 'tetilla' cheese.
7-Shellfish
Galicia is considered to be the shellfish and fish capital of Spain: clams, mussels, cockles, lobsters, prawns, crab or the extravagant gooseneck barnacles, tuna from Burela, hake, monkfish, sardines... the variety of seafood found in fish shops and restaurants in Galicia is impressive, seasonal and of premium quality. Go for a stroll to the Market in Santiago and you will understand, if you are visiting the coast, you are in for a treat.
8-Galician beef
Also greatly appreciated in the rest of Spain is the 'Ternera Gallega' or Galician beef. If you are not into sea creatures, you can always go for beef.
9-Tarta de Santiago
The traditional almond cake with Santiago's cross is a perfect sweet treat to go with a coffee or after a meal. Many other towns in Galicia have similar almond tarts, but each with their specific differences.
10-Flan
Creme caramel or flan is quite a popular dessert in Galicia. In Autumn, many restaurants and bars will make flan with chestnuts.
... and if you need a night cap to help digestion, try a little 'chupito' of herbs liquor or coffee liquor...

11. Santiago de Compostela. Hotel Pazo de Altamira is a lovely, modern hotel within a gorgeous old Galician stone building. And it’s right opposite the fabulous market!
10. Jerez de la Frontera. Definitely try and stay at the famous Hotel Casa Grande - a big old mansion with a gorgeous rooftop terrace for drinks -
9. Vera Valley. I would suggest staying in the village Valverde de la Vera and my pick is the cosy and rustic La Picota:
8. Cadaqués. I love Tramantua Hotel, a white-washed gem run by a husband and wife team… service is fantastic, and it’s right in the old city, plus near the beach:
7. Cáceres. We stayed at the budget but good Hotel Iberia Plaza Mayor with views of the square): If you want to stay IN the old city though, the Parador here is a 14th century palace - the full Caceres medieval dream!
6. Oviedo. Prices in Northern Spain are often cheaper, so you can happily get a great hotel here without spending a lot. Check out the excellent Barceló Oviedo Cervantes:
5. Zahara de los Atunes. Either go with Hotel Avenida Playa (simple, clean, and right off the beach - or the slightly more chic Hotel Doña Lola -
4. Las Alpujarras. Casa Rural la Fragua is a gorgeous little tucked away whitewashed apartment in Capileira (either stay here or in Pampaneira). This place is perfect for exploring the villages around the area.
3. El Rocío. I love Hotel La Malvasía with its old-world luxury, the fact it’s only 5-minutes walk from the famous Santa María del Rocío church and they also have a terrace which is perfect for sunsets.
2. Mejorada del Campo.
Bus info: (take the bus from Conde de Casal). Don’t spend the night there. It’s a day trip. But my favourite Madrid hotels are below (in descending price order):
Pestana Plaza Mayor (right on Plaza Mayor and with a pool) -
Gran Hotel Inglés -
The Pavilions -
Vincci The Mint -
7 Islas -
1. Cádiz. Right in the old town, I love the wonderful Hotel Boutique Convento Cádiz, housed in a renovated 17th century monastery:

Galicia Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Galicie in Spain.
Our journey through romantic northern Spain travels south through Galicia along the Atlantic coast. A Coruña is the region’s largest industrial city and shipping harbour and it thought to have been founded by the Phoenicians in 60 A.D. The Romans conquered this harbour city that has always been associated with the sea and it was from A Coruña that the invincible Spanish Armada set sail in1588 to invade England. Santiago De Compostela is the capital of Galicia and since the Middle Ages it was, apart from Jerusalem and Rome, the most important pilgrimage destination in Christendom. Half a million pilgrims came here each year from all over Europe and Spain’s most religious city continues to attract the faithful. Some centuries ago each of the large villages of the Rias Baixas prospered due to fishing, as did Pontevedra. However, all this changed when its harbour was engulfed by sand some three hundred years ago. In contrast to Spain’s many other harbour cities, the old town of Pontevedra is almost the same now as it was in bygone times with cobbled streets, intimate squares and the residential palaces of the city’s former elite. Across a huge chain bridge that spans the mouth of a deep river is Galicia`s largest city, Vigo. Its name is of Roman origin and it is believed that Vicus Spacorum was the starting-point of Caesar’s campaign against Britannia, as well as a storage area for his Empire’s oil, fish and wine. For many centuries A Guarda, ‘the Female Guard’, has watched over the river border with Portugal and in the wooded mountain city of Monte Santa Tecla the Celts established a settlement that contained more than a thousand buildings that dated back to the 6th and 3rd centuries B.C. and formed part of a prehistoric settlement. Throughout the centuries life in Galicia was not representative of that in the rest of Spain and both Romans and Moors considered it to be too remote for their interests. Maybe that’s what makes it such a special place to be!
