We start off our gastronomic tour of Sarajevo by eating the Cevapcici, the national dish in Bosnia and Herzegovina. One of the top restaurants to eat it is at Petica Cevabzinica. It's minced meat kebab, served with bread and raw onions.
Next we head to Buregdzinica to try some traditional pies, similar to Burek. We tried one with cheese, another with cheese and spinach and one with potatoes. To be really traditional try these pies with yogurt.
We headed to 4 Sobe Gospode to try some Bosnian fusion cuisine accompanied by local wines. We tried a beef carpaccio, a mushroom risotto and a roasted lamb with house wine.
Lastly we headed to Restaurant Dveri. They have a mix of European and Bosnian food. We eat a Hungarian goulash and a delicious steak. They have an extensive wine list from the Herzegovina region. A must visit!

BALKAN FOOD TOUR #8: Trying Bosnian Food in Sarajevo, Bosnia
Behold the Balkan Food Tour where I try out Bosnian food in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina. If you want to see some traditional Bosnian cuisine along with a sweet Turkish treat, you've come to the right place.

So I was exploring around the mean streets of Sarajevo when I came across some mighty interesting historical points of interest and aesthetic-to-the-max architecture. But all that sightseeing got me feeling pretty tired, so I sprinted full speed towards my nearest Bosnian restaurant and I busted on into the joint like I owned the place. And the exact fraction of a nanosecond that I sat down, I started scoping out the menu in that Nanina Kuhinja. And after a cursory glance, it didn't take me long to realize that that menu was slam full with choice quality meats and other Bosnian treats. In fact, it seemed like this mighty fine food establishment was just the ticket I was looking for in life.
So I made my acquaintance with the food maestro and ordered up some Hladna Predjela AND some Sarajevski Sahan. And come to think of it, I got myself a little Bosnian bread basket and rose juice as well. And I must admit, as soon as that food was brought and and I started eating at a frenzied pace, I was pleasantly surprised and even a tad inspired by just how delicious that food actually was. This traditional food connected with me on a deeper, almost spiritual level. And I must say, I was pretty impressed.
So after finishing off that Sarajevo cuisine, I still felt like I needed to eat one more item... JUST one more. I needed to eat a sweet, blood sugar-spiking treat to be exact. So I meandering around that old town and suddenly came across a Kunefe shop. Mind you, I didn't know what Kunefe was at the time, but I quickly found out that this Turkish dessert was exactly what I had been searching for. Long story short, this Balkan Food Tour was a resounding success and quite possibly an epic quest for the history books.

In this episode David takes us to the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina to discover Sarajevo’s sights, sounds, and tastes. Sarajevo is a bustling capital with several historical, cultural and gastronomic stops to experience.
David starts off in the city center where he meets up with his local guide Raza to begin the tour. The best place to start is the Eternal Flame, located in the city center. It has burned continuously since 1946 except during the Bosnian War 1992-1995. It is on display for everyone to see.
David and Raza then take a walk along Ferhadija, Sarajevo’s main pedestrian street that links the two different parts of the city – the 19th century buildings dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Medieval district dating back to Ottoman occupation. In the mix there are also several communist-era buildings when Bosnia existed as a republic in the Social Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Yugoslavia, for short).
At the point when Ferhadija Street meets the Ottoman quarter, there is line on the floor that shows the split. All along Ferhadija Street there are shops, restaurants, cafés, and banks. It is also where the Eternal Flame is located.
Before Raza and David head into Bascarsija (Ottoman district), they make a quick stop at the square of the Sacred Heart Cathedral. In Bascarsija they visit the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, which was built 1530. Afterwards, Raza shows David the different ways to drink a traditional Bosnian coffee at a local Kafana. After fueling up, David stops by Sebilj fountain to have a sip of water. Legend has it that anyone who drinks from the fountain will return to Sarajevo, so we’ll see if David makes his way back one day to experience more of what to see and eat in Sarajevo!
Now time for a little souvenir shopping down Coppersmith Street. Raza shows David the most typical gift one could buy here – a copper coffee pot used to serve Bosnian coffee. All this walking around made them work up quite an appetite, so they head to a bakery to try some delicious pies (cheese, spinach, and meat). The pies are baked over a coal oven and are the perfect fast food. They are also very inexpensive.
Next thing David tries is cevapi (pronounced che-vap-ee), which is pretty much the unofficial national dish of the country. Day 2 takes David and Raza to see the city from a magnificent lookout point, Zuta Tabija, or “yellow fortress.” David recommends driving or taking a taxi there because the climb to the top is quite steep. From here you can see the center of the city and the rolling green hills in the background (in case you didn’t know, Bosnia is one of Europe’s most lush and verdant countries).
After quickly seeing Emperor’s Mosque, Raza takes David to see the exact spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie, were assassinated on June 28, 1914. At the time David visited (2014) it was the 100th year anniversary of their untimely deaths. The assassination triggered the start of the First World War. After revisiting such a pivotal point in European history, David gets curious to see where all the bread he’s been eating comes from so Raza takes him to a nearby bakery, Pekara Alifakovac. They specialize in Somun bread, which is what is served with cevapi. This family-owned bakery churns out hundreds of Somun breads each day, and they have a pick-up window for customers on the go. It’s very hot inside but the experience was well worth it, especially since they allowed David to eat a piece of freshly baked bread.
Last but not least, David heads outside of the city center to visit one of the most culturally significant places in Bosnia, the Sarajevo Tunnel or Tunnel of Hope. Visitors can now see a portion of a tunnel that allowed Bosnians to smuggle in weapons and supplies during the Siege of Sarajevo (May 1992 through November 1995).

Sarajevo (and Bosnia & Herzegovina) is not the easiest of places to really get to grips with, and not the most comfortable. But it has a remarkable, if rather dark, history and the people are extremely friendly and hospitable. Definitely a fascinating country to visit.

Bosnian Food Review - 5 Things to try in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Come join us for a Bosnian Food Review as we head to Šadrvan one of our favorite restaurants in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. As one of our favorite restaurants in Mostar we ended up coming back 3 different times (including once before) to sample a number of different things on the menu. For this particular meal we keyed in on the following food items:
1) Bosnian Coffee with sugar cubes and Turkish delight (honey)
2) Dolma - stuffed peppers with minced meat, rice, parsley, onions and sour cream
3) Mix Plate Platter - Dolma, Bosnian cookies, stewed meat and rice
4) Grilled Vegetables - eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms
5) Baklava for dessert
It was a wonderful meal and we'd highly recommend you visit.

Bosnian Food Review - 5 Things to try in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina Travel Video Transcript:
Well hello there! We managed to find a really cool restaurant and we're going to go film there today. The rain hasn't stopped but it is a little bit lighter so we're going to make our way there and yeah show you what Bosnian and Herzegovina food is all about.
I'm very excited to be trying Bosnian coffee. Oh yeah. This is my very 1st time to try it. Apparently it is very similar to Turkish coffee. Super strong. It is supposed to be very strong. The grounds apparently are uh the coffee grounds are still at the very bottom. Yeah, so they're not filtered. They are not filtered out of the water so you have to let them yep settle before you pour yourself a cup.
It is nice and strong.
Also I feel like I should mention where we are eating because we kind of just ran in here with our umbrellas and didn't really show you the outside. It is called Šadrvan and it is on the west side of the river just as soon as you cross the bridge.
The feast has landed on the table. It sure has. And we're going to start with the first dish which is Dolma. Yeah. And if you have a closer look at this it is basically stuffed peppers with minced meat, rice, parsley, onions and it comes with a giant dollop of cream in the middle. A giant dollop.
This is kind of the ultimate mix plate with tonnes of sour cream. Sour cream. So then you have another one dolma stuffed pepper over there. One dolma.
What is really cool over here is you have it looks like some stewed meat. It is so tender I had that last night. And then you have the Bosnian cookies which is not a cookie at all.
So what is in it? I had this last night and it is basically like a beef patty. Right. So it made with ground beef, eggs, garlic, I think onions and like a little bit of breadcrumbs to give it texture along with rice.
Okay dish number 3. This isn't actually a main. This was our side order. Yeah. And we were trying to keep things relatively healthy. Yeah. So we got a grilled vegetable platter. So if you take a closer look we've got some slices of eggplant, zucchini. We have some mushrooms. It looks like another whole pepper.
And now for dessert and we're having Baklava. It is basically kind of like a mille feux pastry. Like a puffed pastry with all of these layers. And in between you've got like these finely chopped nuts. Yeah. With either honey or some kind of sugary syrup.
We just paid the bill. We sure did. What was the damage? So in local currency which is Bosnian Convertible Marka which has like I think 1.6 exchange rate with the US dollar. That came to twenty two US dollars and fifty cents and in Euros that was 19.40.
We'd give it a five out of five. We'll be back again. Tata!

Eating Food at Inat Kuca in Sarajevo, Bosnia
Have you heard of stuffed onions? What about a restaurant called Inat Kuca? Inat is a funny term that means spite. There is a really funny story about how the restaurant here in Sarajevo came up with this name. The former owners refused to sell out to the Austro Hungarians who were going to build a massive government building on the spot his home was. The guy told them that he'd agree to leave if they moved his house across the street, brick by brick, and they did. The food is good, the service was slow, but they were nice enough and the atmosphere was great. If you are in Sarajevo, try it out.

Ćevapi or Ćevapčići is a traditional meat sausage from the Balkans. It is of Ottoman origin, and can be found in the area of southeastern Europe which was formerly Yugoslavia.
This delicious street food is made with mixed meats, usually minced lamb, pork and/or beef. It is typically served with some freshly baked bread and white onion, which makes for a delightful combination!
Today I try the famous Cevapi in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital city. I get distracted a few times from other delicious street foods, especially the deserts, but eventually make my way to Ćevabdžinica Željo, a restaurant dedicated to serving some of the finest Cevapi in Sarajevo.
