30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Already, we’ve had an awesome time in Wellington, New Zealand, from going to the famous Te Papa Museum to seeing wildlife at Zealandia and so much more. However, we have not yet had chance to just explore the city of Wellington and see the sights of Wellington City centre. That’s what we are doing today: going on our own city tour of Wellington.
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and has a real reputation for being an artsy city. We certainly see this for ourselves on our own travel Wellington experience as we check out murals, street art and sculptures. In particular, there are hidden poems and art along the Wellington Waterfront.
We also take the time to visit the Capital Market which is full of street food and cheap eats in Wellington. Another great place for coffee in Wellington on our Wellington city tour is Enigma Cafe on Courtenay Place.
From the architecture to the street art, Wellington city is a great place to take a walk and check out the hustle and bustle. For more things to do in Wellington, be sure to check out our Wellington Playlist:
So what do you think of Wellington City? Would you do your own city tour of Wellington city?

WELLINGTON VLOG (Day 2)
Day 2! Exploring Wellington like Professional Tourists ;D
It was Sunny + not at all windy + temperature is decent = Perfect Welly kind of day!
We planned to do as much as we can on our second day, as the rest of the days were either going to be cloudy, drizzling, raining, and/or cold.
We tried getting up as early as we can but 8am was our best, instead of our planned “6am start”. We prepared our snack which we will bring and eat once we arrive at the Lookout at Mount Victoria as we were certain we’ll be hungry by then.
VICTORIA LOOKOUT: See Wellington on 360!
We walked to Victoria Lookout from our Hostel (Nomads at Wakefield street, near Cuba Street) which took us just more or less 30 minutes, then we started hiking up to the lookout.
ORIENTAL BEACH/BAY:
Situated against the northern slope of Mount Victoria and just 1.5km from the central city is where you can find Oriental Bay. The sand found at Oriental Beach came all the way from Golden Bay.
ORIENTAL PARADE:
Heading towards CBD through Oriental Parade, we took a turn and discovered the footpath along Evans Bay Parade where the boatsheds were. Awesome place to take photos!
WELLINGTON WATERFRONT:
We enjoyed the magnificent views of the harbour and was great strolling there. Before we got off the waterfront walk, we tried the slide at Frank Kitts Park which Tracie was so keen to try!
WELLINGTON CABLE CAR:
Not far from the waterfront, it took as more or less 10 mins to walk to Cable Car Lance where you can ride up the hill to the top of the Botanic Garden. The highlight of our day is absolutely when “Gabriel” played and sang. He sounds famous! Here are the full videos of the songs he sang:
Call Out My Name -
Purple Rain -
Honesty -
BOTANIC GARDEN:
The Wellington Botanic Garden covers 25 hectares of land on the side of the hill and is located near central Wellington.
THE BEEHIVE:
“Beehive” the most common name for the Executive Wing. It is so-called because of its shape reminiscent of that of a traditional woven form of beehive(‘skep’). The Beehive is the most recognisable building in the Parliamentary complex. Free tours are given at the Parliament, which is just beside the Beehive.
CUBA STREET: My fav street!
Took a bus and hopped off at Cuba street, decided to get some food before going back to the hostel. There are a wide range of cafes, restaurants, take-aways, bars, shops, etc at this street and night food markets on Fridays.
One of my Best travels so far!
Would like to thank Tracie for joining me as well! I had so much fun travelling with you! ❤

Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellington - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 77: Today we are seeing New Zealand wildlife up-close at the Zealandia wildlife sanctuary in Wellington! Join us for native birds at the Zealandia Ecosanctuary.
Yesterday - Day 76 ➜
Tomorrow – Day 78 ➜
30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year web series we are visiting Zealandia in Wellington. Zealandia is a wildlife sanctuary in New Zealand with a protective predator proof fence. Native birds are abundant here where it is safe from invasive pests. We learn a lot about the native ecosystem and the threat of introduced pests at the Zealandia Museum.
After being given a map of multiple walks around Zealandia in Wellington, we start walking to see more and more New Zealand birds. We see kaka, tui, takahe, North Island robin, shags and so much more!
Feeding stations in Zealandia allow you to see New Zealand native birds up-close.
We also bump into one of the Zealandia Ecosanctuary volunteers who gives us a quick tour of Zealandia to explain more about the native plants and birds of New Zealand. We even see the weta, a giant New Zealand insect.
If you want to learn about New Zealand’s eco-system, it’s native wildlife and the New Zealand birds, then Zealandia Ecosanctuary in Wellington is a great place to start to get informed.
So what do you think of Zealandia in Wellington? Is this wildlife sanctuary in Wellington a place you would put on your New Zealand bucket list?
