Lima Food Review - Eating Nikkei Cuisine in Lima, Peru
Join us for this Lima Food Review where we head over to Nikko Restaurant to eat Nikkei Cuisine in Lima, Peru. We discovered this restaurant in Lima because of Audrey's Aunt who first brought us to Nikko three years ago. All in all this what were ordered:
1) Fried rice mixed with seafood
2) Pulpo a la parrilla (grilled octopus)
3) Yucca fries
4) Octopus salad with a creamy sauce
5) Ceviche ponja (Japanese Peruvian style ceviche)
6) Acevichado rolls (Ceviche maki rolls
7) Teriyaki Meshi fried rice
8) Mixed tempura

Lima Food Review - Eating Nikkei Cuisine in Lima, Peru Travel Food Video Transcript:
It is time for another food video. Today we are eating Nikkei cuisine and that is basically fusion between Peruvian and Japanese foods. So we've come to a restaurant in La Molina. It is called Nikko. This is my Aunt's favorite restaurant. It is. She has been raving about it nonstop. We've actually been here a couple of years ago. We didn't film. We've been here twice before. Every time we come to Lima we end up coming here at least once. We are like okay it is time to finally show you what you can eat here. We've already made one video where we visited a Nikkei restaurant before but that was all sushi and it was like Peruvian Japanese style sushi. But this one has a lot more dishes. It is not just sushi so you can get like meat dishes and rice and fish and a whole bunch of other things. Exactly. It should be a good meal. We've already placed our orders. I think we've ordered like 4 different dishes between the two of us. There is quite a bit coming. It is good we brought our appetites that is for sure.
The starters have arrived. We have 3 dishes that we're going to share with my family here. So this one is a rice with seafood. It looks really good. I've already grabbed a bit of that. We also have pulpo a la parrilla which is octopus cooked on the grill.
And it comes with yucca fries on the bottom.
Oh octopus salad guys. Look at that. It looks good. The sauce looks really nice and creamy.
My main dish has arrived. I went for a ceviche. It is like all I get all of the time. But it is a special one. Yes, so this one is called ceviche ponja which is like a play on words. Ponja Japon. They just like switched up the syllables and it means Japan ceviche. And it comes with sweet potato.
And you also got some fried rice. Yes. Teriyaka Meshi. It looks like it has got corn. Which is very Peruvian. It has got different kinds of it looks like there is carrots.
The last dish that we ordered was tempura. So if you take a look over here you can see that half of it is fish. And the other half is sweet potato. So I've actually got your bites that you've already been eating.
You can see here this one is the sweet potato this one is the fish.
That was a feast of feasts. Like we ate so much food. We ordered too much and we also had appetizers that just everyone else ordered so that was all so good. We're actually taking food home with us. We are. We just couldn't finish it all. There were a lot of hungry mouths but we couldn't polish it off. Anyways in terms of price point a lot of things were around 30 Soles range. Because we ate so much we ended up paying roughly about $25 US dollars per person.
This is part of our Travel in Peru video series showcasing Peruvian food, Peruvian culture and Peruvian cuisine.

12 FOODS YOU MUST EAT IN PERU 2020 | Lima & Cusco (Peruvian Food / Comida Peruana | Peru Vlog)
For the ultimate Peruvian food (comida peruana) experience there are 12 foods you must eat while visiting Peru, especially in Lima and Cusco. Since spending some time in Lima, Peru and Cusco, Peru we can certainly validate Peru as having some of the best food in the world in our Peruvian Food vlog 2020. Being able to experience these 12 amazing foods was not only delicious, but a true experience. We also include some of the best Lima street food as well as, more broadly, Peru street food, in this Peru vlog (Peru 2020).
Note: There are a couple of dishes we wished we tried in Peru while we were there recently, but due to our schedule we didn't have a chance to. The ones below with an * are the ones we didn't have in Peru.
- Lomo saltado - A Chifu ( Chinese ) influenced main dish that has mixed well into the Peruvian everyday culture. Tasty beef stir fry that has all the right ingredients making it the perfect hearty dish.
- Ceviche - is the seafood dish originated in Peru typically made from fresh raw fish cured in citrus juices, and spiced with ají, chili peppers or other seasonings including onions, salt, and cilantro. Pairs nicely with a crisp white wine.
- Ají de gallina *- A traditional and classic Peruvian food, and a dish nearly everyone loves is Ají de gallina, a chicken stew. We didn't get to try this dish in Peru but we did have it at a small traditional Peruvian restaurant by a chef from Lima Peru when we got back to Austin, TX. Pairs nicely with a cold Peruvian cerveza
- Carapulcra (con Sopa Seca con Arroz Verde) - Afro Peruvian cuisine stew of pork and dehydrated potatoes, with peanuts, aji panca and mirasol peppers, garlic, and other spices like clove.
- Alpaca - Some of the healthiest and most flavorful meats in the world. A mild meat which takes on the flavor of the dish. It is slightly salty, lean, high in protein with no fatty after taste.
- Cuy - alternately called Cobayo or conejillo de indias is a guinea pig. Taste like rabbit or chicken. Though difficult to accept for people in other countries who regard guinea pigs as pets, the cuy is a staple of Andean cuisine.
- Anticuchos - *Grilled Beef cow heart. It's a traditional Peruvian dish that date back to the 16th century.when they were first encountered by the Spanish conquistadors. Generally served on skewers and grilled on an open fire with incredible spices.
- Causa Limeña * - basically a layered potato chicken salad. If you like chicken or tuna salad, you'll love this dish. This wasn't our favorite. Very tasty but just reminded us of that chicken salad that mom made.
Desserts
- Alfajores - soft, delicate cookies made from cornstarch. What hold the cookie together is a creamy Dulce de leche. Topped with a little powdered sugar.
_ Picarones - Peruvian dessert that originated in Lima. It's main ingredients are squash and/or sweet potato. It is served in a doughnut form and covered with chancaca syrup.
Drinks
- Pisco Sour - alcoholic cocktail of Peru. The name comes from pisco, which is its base liquor, and the cocktail term sour, in reference to sour citrus juice and sweetener components. It's topped with an egg white layer.
- Chicha Morado - originated in the Andean regions of Perú and made from the purple corn

CENTRAL RESTAURANT LIMA PERU | Our experience at one of the top 10 restaurants in the world
We visited one of the top 10 restaurants in the world (#5 at the time) - Central Restaurant Lima, Peru!
Central Restaurante Peru is highlighted on Netflix's Chef's Table - Season 3, Episode 3. Peruvian Chef Virgilio Martinez has brought the Peruvian food scene onto the world stage, and Central Restaurant Lima is recognized as the Number 5 Restaurant in the World.
Here's our Central Restaurant experience - we attended the 12-course Ecosistemas Mater. Our final bill was over $500 plus tip for the night.
The crazy things we do for a video! Fortunately, we live quite frugally so we can save for things just like this.
Enjoy!

Is LIMA Really the Food Capital of South America? ???? Eating Chicharrón, Lomo saltado & Sushi in Peru
Because we had such a good time trying Peruvian food in Lima a couple of weeks ago and we missed out on a few things, we decided to do a part #2. WATCH PART 1 HERE:
Lima (and Peru) is famous for having some of the best food in all of South America, so it definitely made sense to go out on a second trek around Lima to find some fantastic food!
To start things off, we went to a very famous sandwich place in Lima called La Lucha Sangucheria. Thankfully we didn’t have to wait too long for our food. Here we tried the Chicharron sandwich (what they are known for) and a pollo con piña y queso sandwich (Chicken with pineapple and cheese).
Next up we tried a very popular carbonated drink in Peru. This is a type of soda or pop called Inca Kola and you can pretty much get it anywhere in Lima!
After this we made our way to a sushi restaurant. This may sound a bit strange for South America, but Lima has a large Asian and Japanese population and they now have their own type of sushi which fuses both Peruvian flavours and sushi together and is known as Nikkei.
Lastly we stuck with the Asian theme but went for some Chinese Peruvian food. We went to a fast food chain called Sr. Saltado. Here we tried the famous dish Lomo Saltado, as well as a chicken dish called Tallarin Saltado.
ABOUT LIMA
Lima, the capital of Peru, lies on the country's arid Pacific coast. Though its colonial center is preserved, it's a bustling metropolis and one of South America’s largest cities. It's home to the Museo Larco collection of pre-Columbian art and the Museo de la Nación, tracing the history of Peru’s ancient civilizations. The Plaza de Armas and the 16th-century cathedral are the heart of old Lima Centro.
ABOUT PERU
Peru is a country in South America that's home to a section of Amazon rainforest and Machu Picchu, an ancient Incan city high in the Andes mountains. The region around Machu Picchu, including the Sacred Valley, Inca Trail and colonial city of Cusco, is rich in archaeological sites. On Peru’s arid Pacific coast is Lima, the capital, with a preserved colonial center and important collections of pre-Columbian art.

Peruvian Supermarket Tour + Peruvian Foods to Buy in Lima, Peru Transcript:
Well hello there Sam. Want to tell us what are we up to today? Hey guys so today we are going to do a Peruvian grocery store tour. Yes! And this is our local shop not far from where we are staying. It is Wong. Wong. Just over your shoulder. It is not a little store. It is a great big store. Two levels yes and there is a lot of unique Peruvian products. Yes. And we're going to try and show you as many of those as we possibly can.
Productos Tipicos Peruanos. First up typical Peruvian products. Yeah. There is a little bit of everything here. Some things I recognize some things I don't. I really like this display because yes you can also find these items in other parts of the store. For instance I know that these um these San Jose what are these called? Ah, turrone. Ah turrones. I've seen these turrones elsewhere I've also seen King Kongs elsewhere but they don't seem to have them today. This is really cool. You get this at the restaurants a lot. Canchita. Oh yeah. We have that for a lot of snacks at your Aunt's house too. Chifles which are plantains slices but they are like chips. Yep. There are surprisingly not sweet and not very salty either.
I know a few words. Rocoto. That is another famous one as well. Oh and my Mom just bought some of these. Yes. She was at the supermarket this morning. Tejas. These are Tejas. Oh how do I ever describe this. It is like a sweet you can have different fillings. Yeah. This can be pecans. Pecans. Pecans. Pecans. Yeah, it is basically pecans or prunes yes and then inside is like manjar blanco yes which is like the caramel spread. Yes. And then you also have it is coated in chocolate.
Alright my favorite section and probably the most colorful section by far in Wong grocery store. The fruit. So look at this. We have this is chirimoya. How would you describe that? It is like a flesh white fleshy. It is white fleshy pulp. Yes. And they put it in cakes. They do. They often have it served with manjar blanco which is similar to dulce de leche. Yeah. The caramel spread. And then look over here. Caramboya. I don't think we've had one of these. Carambolla. I don't know. I've never had that one. And lucuma.
Look Audrey this is your Grandma's favorite item for breakfast. Papaya you can get it whole or already like I guess you could say it is split in half and sort of processed for you. And that is a reasonable price. Like this is 499 or sorry 5.99. Yeah. So you're talking less than $2 US dollars for a giant slice of papaya. It is a pretty good deal.
Audrey check this out. This is also one of my favorite sections too. You can get the giant bundles of limon. The lemons. And these are great because you can make them in all of the different mixed drinks huh?
Like the chilcanos. Pisco sours. Huanaso. Exactly. And yeah you can use them for teas too. When you had a sour throat just the other day I was making you I was making you limon tea with honey and real ginger. Yes. Te de limon. Te de limon.
This is your all-time favorite breakfast in Peru. Peruvian breakfast. Yes it is. What are you getting? Tamales. So what is it?

Lima Fast Food - Eating Peruvian Hamburgers at Bembos in Lima, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
Good afternoon guys. So we are heading for some Peruvian fast food. We are going to be trying some Peruvian style burgers and we are heading to a place that we visited two years ago. Yes. This place is called Bembos.
We are about to have a major burger session here. I know. 3 of them. Three of them. And I'm going to be eating most of it. Yeah and the cool thing about Bembos is that they have very unique burgers with a bit of a Peruvian twist. Well yeah they are Peruvian style burgers. Yeah. Like for instance this one is called the Salchipapa so basically if you take a look inside here you'll see like the cut up hot dog. Okay. And then you've got your small papa fritas.
Number 2. And this one is the most jacked of the three. It has the most ingredients inside. So this one is called Bembos lomo a la pobre. We open it up and you see we've got mayonnaise on top we've got our egg. Yeah, fried egg. And this is the coolest part in my opinion. The fried plantain. Yeah. And it is usually a little bit sweet if I remember correctly and underneath check out all of those onions guys and then tomatoes. So that should be a really juicy burger.
last but not least we are having I think it is called the Huachana burger. Huachana. Ah, Huachana. Okay so this burger right here has egg. Yeah. It has got those crispy little potato chips in there. Right in here. It has mayo. Yep. Um and lettuce. The burger. What else did I say oh the sausage. Salchicha de huacho. It is a type of sausage.
Time price point. It came to 65 Soles which right now is roughly $20 US dollars. That was a lot of food. I'm just going to recap what we had. So that was 2 Chicha Morada drinks. We had 3 giant burgers. They were medium sized but they were massive. A thing of fries and two desserts. So I thought that was pretty good value. Roughly $10 dollars per person. Yep. And yeah um I wouldn't normally come and eat three burgers. That is pretty good fast food and if you're going to come to Peru and you're looking for something like unique and you want to try Peruvian style kind of fast food this is definitely the place because Bembos has all of these different types of burgers. Like we didn't even order all of the ones that you can get here. So definitely check it out and we'll see you guys in the next food video from Lima, Peru. Ciao for now.
This is part of our Travel in Peru video series showcasing Peruvian food, Peruvian culture and Peruvian cuisine.

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us, including starting a travel vlog. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia and to create travel videos along the way.
Traveling Atlas was created to capture our moments of taking risk, building connections, and seeing the world. We will be staying in each country we visit for about a month in order to experience cultures to our maximum capacity and to inspire others that they can do the same. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.

⭐⭐ LIMA RECOMMENDATIONS⭐⭐
1. Since Peru is known for its food, take a cooking class or a food tour with a local. There are several you could book online. This was on our list, but unfortunately due to bad weather on our trip into Lima we missed a day and missed our cooking class.
2. Definitely visit Parque del Amor. A gorgeous park is in the Miraflores neighborhood. Excellent spot to catch a sunset, soak up the positive energy and even capture some incredible photos.
3. Take a nice drive ( 4 hours) to Huacachina and experience the incredible Sand Dune buggy and Sand Surfing. Great little shops in the area and wonderful spots to eat lunch.
4. If you're going to be in Huacachina, stop at a the restaurant/winery called El Catador in ICA. The food and drinks are delicious. We tried a native dish Carapulcra Sopa Seca and Carapulcra Arroz Verde.
5. Boat Tour to the Ballestas Island to see the Penguins and incredible birds and wildlife. ( VERY touristy and can get VERY busy so get there early.
6. In Miraflores, the malecon runs along the coast for miles. You'll see many people out either running, walking, biking. There's even a dog park and playgrounds. So something or everyone.
7. Visit Plaza de Armas both during the day and at night. The churches and other buildings are spectacular. You can also visit the San Francisco Church and the famous catacombs there.
At night Plaza de Armas is stunning visual treat.
See the oldest fountain in Lima, Peru there and if yo ugoing to be traveling to Lima in July..on July 26th they fill the fountain with Pisco for everyone to drink. ( BONUS)
8. The place in Lima we had Ceviche was called Sabor a Peru in the City Center..not our favorite but we did have it at night, and apparently you should have Ceviche during the day and certainly by lunch time. We weren't impressed with the restaurant but that's just our opinion.

Lima City Tour + Home Cooked Peruvian Food Travel Video Transcript:
Greetings from Lima, Peru. Yes we are finally doing some sightseeing today. Yeah. Because we've been here a few days just eating, drinking, socializing. It has been fantastic but we need to start moving our skeletons a bit to burn off some calories. Yeah, today we have signed up to do a bus tour with Turibus of the historic centre and we've done a similar tour with Mirabus in the past. I feel like I've done that tour like 3 times. Right. But my sister's husband has never been to Lima. Yep. It is his first time here and he needs to see the city. Yeah, we're basically going to show him and also we're departing from a different area. Yes. Normally we've departed from Kennedy Park. Parque Kennedy. Yep. But this time we are departing from Larcomar and it should be really cool because we don't go to the central downtown part of Lima that much. Not very much. Yeah. So it is going to be nice to go back and check that out today. Yeah and the price was $25 USD dollars. Right. I think pretty good for a 3 hour tour.
We are now finally entering the historic center. Yeah it takes a little while. I know. Lots of traffic today. Tonnes of traffic today. I've had a bit of a nap. You have. You tend to do that whenever there is a long bus ride.
Another attraction that we're only seeing in passing. This is Plaza Martin. Nice gardens you've got San Martin on his horse.
Alright we just got off of the bus. At Plaza de Armas. We have five minutes for photos.
Here we have the cathedral and moving over just behind the fountain we have the Bishop's Palace. Turning over we have the government palace. Sam is busy taking photos here. And over on that side city hall, 4 major landmarks and one square.
So we are now visiting the Convent of San Francisco. This is going to be where we'll be spending most of our time. It is the main attraction we're covering today on the main bus tour. However no photo and no video allowed inside which really sucks because I've been here like 3 times before and it is impressive so we'll just show you the exterior.
So we've just exited the Convent of San Francisco (Basílica y Convento de San Francisco). What did you think? You've been here several times now. Yeah. And unfortunately the rules haven't changed. You are not allowed to take any photos or videos.
Sam's first causa in a long time. Yeah really excited about this. Tell us about the ingredients. Well it is like yellow potatoes. It looks like we have peas. We have chicken. Mmmhmm. Eggs. Egg on top. Black olives. Lots of mayo. It is delicious. This is like a potato shepherd's pie. I would say. Red onions Sam? Oh yes please. Thank you. Oh I'll have red onions too. That will give it a little bit of kick. Gracias.
