Madurai Food Tour - Madurai PAROTTA - Egg PAAYA - Fishlette (Fish Omelette)
Welcome to the food capital of Tamil Nadu. We had the good fortune to taste a number of unique dishes on our trip down south. So come and discover along with us the delectable food of Madurai.
There are a number of places in Madurai that are just serving cold drinks to battle the hot weather of the region. One such drink is Elaneer Sherbet which is made from coconut water, coconut cream, some syrup and ice. We then visited Sun Lemon Tea Stall, where ironically we had Sukku/Chukku Malli Coffee. This unique drink is supposed to be a cure for cough, containing dried ginger, coriander seeds and fenugreek.
Along the way we tried a few sweets that almost like candies. Sweets like javvu mithai, thaen mithai, sooda mithai or elandha pazham are available in a lot of shops on the streets. Our next stop was Kavannah Parotta Kadai in Natham. Here we tried the iconic deep fried parotta which crushed and topped with mutton gravy and some pieces of dry or chukka mutton along with mint chutney. The crispy and flaky parotta goes perfectly well with the melt-in-the-mouth mutton pieces and gravy.
Later we visited the flower market in Madurai where we tried Valakkai/ Vazhakai Bajji or Plantain Fritters. The plantains are coated with a batter of chickpea flour and spices and then deep fried, the perfect evening snack. We then went to Rani Vilas for some paniyaram omelette, served with rice, mutton, bone marrow and some chutneys. Here we also tried Ratha Poriyal, a dish prepared with goat's blood. After that we tried an interesting drink called Koozh. Another cool porridge drink to enjoy in the hot weather.
We landed at Ajmeer Mahal for quite a wholesome meal. Here we had the ceylon parotta that is very similar to the bengali mughlai parantha; Vazhiyal whoch basically scrambled eggs with spices; and kothu parotta, a blend of minced parotta pieces with curry leaves, onions, spices and eggs. For some more refreshments we went to the KRK Milk Depot. We sweetened our mouth with some milk halwa and some rose milk and badam milk.
In the evening we tried an interesting chaat called egg paaya, which is made from mutta bonda/egg bonda, onion samosa, pattaani gravy and topped with onions. A very refreshing and spicy dish. For all the fish lovers we discovered paradise. At PSA Fish, you get everything that lives in water. We mainly tried Tandoori Fish and prawns, Prawn biryani, fish fingers, fish omelette and a lot more. Finally we came to an end of the food tour with a nice cup of strong coffee at PTR Tea Stall and Snack Bar.

MADURAI Food Tour - Idiyappam (Rice Noodle) - Ragi (Finger Millet) Puttu
South India is the one place where you get some of the tastiest and healthiest street food. Yes, healthy! Our trip to Madurai was truly enlightening and beautiful. After our trip to Jallikattu, where we experienced Pongal celebrations with the locals and got to taste some amazing food, we made our way to the city.
Beginning our journey in the Spice Bazaar along with our lovely host Praveena, we visited S V Sweets. Here, we tried a sweet dish called Adhivarasam which is made from a rice flour and jaggery, shaped like a doughnut and deep fried like one too. As very well put by our host, “it is shaped like doughnut, tastes even better.” This is an authentic Tamilian dessert and is sold only for Rs. 6. So if you’re in the mood for some desi style doughnuts, this is your best bet!
Our next stop was Gopu Iyengars Tiffin Centre. This place is a century old and is known best for its Vellai Appam. Located right next to the Meenakshi Temple, this 100 year gem serves its meal traditionally on Banana leaves, that are easily disposable as well as hygienic. The vellai appam is made with rice flour and urad dal and served with coconut chutney, sambhar and a super hot green chilli chutney. The food in Madurai in general is quite hot and pungent, and according to the locals the philosophy behind so much chilli in such hot weather is that ‘you have to eat the heat to beat the beat.’
When in South India, you just cannot ignore a good cup of filter coffee. We went to Visalam Coffee Bar for some delicious and strong filter coffee. This is the kind of coffee that will wake you up from any kind of stupor.
We next walked to a shop called Burma Idiyappam Shop, serving idiyappam from the same spot for 42 years. Idiyappam is made from rice flour that is pressed into noodle form and is topped with coconut shavings and sugar. The dish is super light and healthy, since there is zero oil in it and it is steamed. Later in the day we tried Keppai Puttu, which is basically ragi that is shaped like a cylindrical cake and steamed, then it is topped off with coconut shavings and jaggery. We also tried Keerai and Keppai Vadai. The Keerai Vadai is made with a special kind of herb known Mullumurungai, which is mixed with rice flour and the deep fried. The Keepai Vadai is made with ragi or finger millet, shallots, green chillies and curry leaves, and the deep fried as well. Despite being deep fried in oil the vadai is super light and is not heavy on the palate at all.
We visited the Meenakshi Bhavan for their Special Rawa Dosai that is made with sooji or semolina, carrots, cashews, pepper, chilli, jeera and a bit of desi ghee. The dosai is super crispy and has a beautiful nutty texture to it. What is even better is that it is served with quite a few chutneys so one can take pick and choose between them. Finally we went to Sree Sabreesh for the Adai Avial. This two part dish is truly mouthwatering. The adai is a very healthy lentil dosai which is served with avial- a vegetable dish stewed with a variety of spices and coconut milk. For dessert we tried the Paal Pandiyaram, which is rice balls in sweet coconut milk.
Our journey came to an end with a super healthy, nutrient rich banana. Eating a banana after a heavy meal is a tradition here, so we obliged. Our special thanks to Praveena from Foodies Day Out, it was an absolute pleasure to be in the company of someone who loves and appreciates food as much as we do.

Pondicherry BRUNCH (Breakfast + Lunch) Food Tour - French Breakfast - Vadacurry
The beautiful Pondicherry also known as Puducherry, is one of the most vibrant places we have been to. This place is an amalgamation of a number of cultures owing it to the different colonial rulers. Pondicherry has been under the control of the Portuguese, the French, the Dutch as well as the British, which is what makes this state distinct. Some of the most popular foods in the region are in fact French or Portuguese.
Keeping all things in mind, we began our journey in Pondicherry along with our lovely host Haksheta Rajasekar, at the Baker Street. We tried the classic croissant with a twist of Tandoori Chicken and the perfect breakfast combination of eggs, ham and cheese in a quiche. The flavours may not be too scintillating to the Indian palate that is used to a hefty dose of spices but nonetheless, these dishes were mouth wateringly delicious!
Our next stop was the Murugan Cafe where we tasted a unique uthappam with an even more unique accompaniment. The cashew uthappam is made with a lot of ghee and cashews giving it a very nutty texture, and served along with is a Vadacurry. The cashew uthappam was crispy yet super fluffy and we learnt that like all good things in life, the vadacurry was made by accident when the cook mixed a few leftover vadas with stew.
Then for a pick-me-up we visited the Sri Sai Ram Coffee Bar for some Filter Coffee. Like we always say- ‘a trip to South India is incomplete without a cup of Filter Coffee.’ The Filter Coffee here, is super strong and is the perfect way to awaken your senses.
Later we reached J A Arcot Biryani Hotel for some out-of-this-world Biryani. The chicken biryani here is made with long grain basmati rice unlike the short grain rice which is popular in the region. The biryani has a strong flavour from the ginger and garlic and is absolutely delicious. This biryani style is popular in Arcot, which is a small district in Vellore. From here we went on to explore the famous Gourbet market. The market is named after the first Chief Minister of Pondicherry, Édouard Gourbet. The market is filled with varieties of colourful flowers, vegetables and spices. Here we discovered the different types of Banana leaves and their different uses, and Mor Milagai which is chillies soaked in buttermilk that makes it salty and then sun dried. To beat the heat we tried the Neer Mor, which is just what you need on a hot summer’s day. We even visited the Fish market where you get some of the freshest variety of seafood.
Then, we moved on to a place called Irfan Restaurant. This is located in a Muslim dominant region, which is to say the food is absolutely divine. Here we tried the Nei Parotta, Nei means Ghee in Tamil, which simply means the Parotta is fried in desi ghee. It is served with Mutton Saalna or curry, and we also got the Naati Khozi Fry/ Desi Chicken Fry. The combination of these three things is to die for! You can get this same combination evene early in the morning for breakfast or you can go for the slightly healthier option and try the mutton saalna with idiyappam.
Finally, our lovely food tour came to an end with some rocking Sherbet. R K Juice Centre is known for serving the Paal Sherbet that is made from condensed milk, milk, nannari sarbath, sabja seeds and almond gum. This drink is served completely chilled, it is healthy and super refreshing! So if ever you're in Pondicherry and hoping to find more some local food options, don’t forget to visit these places. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.

Visiting Meenakshi Amman Temple and the Best Street Food Tour in Madurai India with Foodies Day Out
Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture I've ever seen. They don't allow any electronics and I believe this is an excellent thing. This allowed us to take our time and truly explore the temple for what it is. Amazing experience and highly recommended. The night ended with a street food tour with Foodies Day Out( And let me tell you, it was Outstanding.

MATHURA Street Food Tour - सरसों तेल की कचोड़ी | खस्ता बेड़मी पूरी | Peda Factory Visit
Welcome to the sacred land of Mathura. Believed to be the Birthplace of the Hindu God Krishna, Mathura has a lot to offer when it comes to food.
We started our journey the classic U.P. style with Hing ki Kachori and Jalebi at Oma Pehalwan Kachori Waale. The kachori is stuffed with moong dal and some spices and fried crisp. It is then topped off with aloo jhol, a special potato sabji that is flavoured with not onions, not garlic, not even tomatoes, but with ginger and green chillies. The flavour of the kachori and sabji are very unique. The jalebis they serve are fried in desi ghee, so obviously, nothing can go wrong. Weirdly enough the locals like to eat the super sweet jalebi with the spicy aloo jhol. The flavour combination may seem a little out there, but it goes very well together.
We then visited Kali Charan Chache Kachori Wale for another type of Kachori and sabji combo. The kachori here is fried in Mustard Oil which is unlike any Kachori we have ever tried. It super crisp and the perfect vessel for the aloo jhol that they serve along with it.
Moving on to sweeter pastures, we landed at Gusai Pere Wala. Now there are two shops by the same name here, but one opened in 1832 and the other in 1820, and both of them distinct in their own way. The famous peda in both shops are quite similar in flavour. At Gusai Pere Wala (1832) you can have the good fortune of trying butter toast or chhena toast, this ultra sweet mithai is sure to wake up all your senses. Gusai Pere Wala (1820) also serves an interesting mixture of chidwa or puffed rice, that is roasted with a lot of spices and has unique flavour to it.
Our next stop was Chehlo Pethe Wala, that serves some amazing Khasta Bedai. They fry the Bedai for so long that it is almost red in colour. It is topped off with aloo jhol and some pumpkin or kaanchiphal ki sabji.
After the super crispy meal we headed to Shankar Mithai Wala for their Puri Thali. The thali consists of 4 puris, aloo sabji, kaanchiphal and some mango pickle. This goes best with a glass of lassi served in the classic kulhad to enhance the flavours.
We then tried Magode or Pakode as we know it at Babulal Sharma Magode Wala. They serve cauliflower, potato and moong daal magode, which are fried to crisp perfection and topped with some green and red chutney. At Shree Yamuna Chaat Bhandar, one can try some Aloo Bhalla or Tikki, that is topped with some chickpea curry and chutneys. You can also try the Tikiya or golgappe made of sooji, maida or atta. This is a must try, the flavours of the tikiya and the stuffing in it is mind blowing.
Next, we went to Brijwasi sweets for some Peda, Rabri and Khurchan. Khurchan is basically condensed milk which forms a layer at the bottom of the pan and is scraped off. The Rabri was thick, creamy and full of the flavour of Pista. The Peda was much dense and rolled in Powdered sugar. We had the opportunity to visit the Brijwasi Sweets’ factory where the cooks tirelessly make pedas one after the other. The process is lengthy and quite time and labour consuming, but the result is worth the effort. At last we ended the journey with a hefty dose of Rasgulla paan at Kaku Paan Palace.
