Street Food in Peru - ULTIMATE 14-HOUR PERUVIAN FOOD + Market Tour in Lima!

Street food in Lima, Peru! #Lima #Peru #PeruvianFood #streetfood
Peruvian food is one of the world’s great cuisines, and I was thrilled to have a chance to visit Peru to learn about and taste the food. In this video, get ready for an ultimate 14-hour straight Peruvian street food tour of Lima!
Here’s everything included in this food tour:
La Parada Market - If you love vegetable markets, I don’t think anywhere else in Lima is as colorful, energetic, and vibrant. This is the beating heart of Lima’s food supply, and I fully enjoyed walking around and seeing the diversity of ingredients from around Peru all in one busy wholesale Market.
Caldo Cesar - Elias navigated us to Caldo Cesar, a restaurant that was incredibly packed and specializes in some of Lima’s best caldo de gallina - chicken hen soup. It was one of the best chicken soups I’ve ever had in my life. Total Price - 52 PEN ($15.71) for 4
Ceviche Cart - One of the national dishes and most beloved dishes of Peru is ceviche (raw fish in lime juice), and we walked over to the section of the market where they sell fish and seasonings for ceviche and had a plate of fresh Peruvian ceviche. It was delicious. Price - 8 PEN ($2.42)
Fruit Tasting - This was pretty unplanned, we just walked around the fruit market and tasted about a dozen types of fruit. My favorite fruits were the Sanky - Fruit produced by a cactus, Camu camu - Native to the Amazon rainforest, and Lucuma - Gold of the Incas.
Papa rellena - This is one of the most common of all Peru street foods, a papa rellena, or a Peruvian stuffed potato. I was impressed - one of the best fried potatoes maybe I’ve ever had in my life.
Tocosh - This fermented potato pulp, was invented by the Incas, and it’s not for the faint of heart. I thought it was unique and pretty delicious, and fun to eat, and it contains natural penicillin.
Papa con huevo - This was ok, but just basic, a potato with egg on top and doused in sauces. This is again, a classic part of Peruvian street food, especially enjoyed by children.
Sanguchería El Chinito - “I practically moved to Peru just for this sandwich.” - Timour Ghoneim. That says it all about this legendary chicharrón Peruvian sandwich located at Plaza de Armas. And he was right, you would move to Lima for this sandwich.
Don Tito Pollos a la Brasa - If you ask Peruvians what is one of their comfort foods, I’m guessing pollo a la brasa would be a common answer. Pollo a la brasa is Pervuian rotisserie chicken, but somehow they just do it better in Peru. Total Price - 84 PEN ($25.39)
Anticuchos Manuela - Without a doubt, this was one of my favorite parts of this entire Peru street food tour of Lima, anticuchos, or grilled cow hearts. They are truly majestic, so juicy and flavorful, you won’t believe it. Price - 10 PEN ($3.02)
Picarones - Finally to end this ultimate street food in Peru tour of Lima, we ordered some picarones, donuts made from sweet potato and pumpkin. They are addictively delicious and should be eaten when you’re in Lima. Price - 6 PEN ($1.81) per box

In Lima you can find one called Causa Limeña. It is often a shared appetizer but eaten on its own it can be a main.

Causa: Eating our favorite Peruvian potato dish in Lima, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
#eatPERU
So it is time for another food video and today we are going to be trying something that is called Causa. Causa, it is kind of like a shepperds pie if you haven't tried it before, it is made with yellow mashed potato and you can get lots of different fillings. So we've ordered two different varities and that should be coming soon and it is going to be delicious. I love the causa.
And while we wait. While we wait, while we wait. We're going to have our favorite snack - Canchita - which is the fried corn with salt on top of it.
Ah, I'm loving this stuff. And I'm always amazed by the size of these kernels. Seriously, it never gets old. Look at that. I know. They are gigantic. Massive. They're like twice the size of what we're used to having back home in Canada.
So the causa has arrived and it is a thing of beauty. How excited are you for your food, Sam?
Yeah, it looks like artwork. I almost feel guilty tucking in to it. Almost. Okay, so let's talk about the key ingredients that make up causa.
So you have your yellow potato, lime and aji which is the yellow hot pepper. Yeah. In terms of fillings you can have lots of different ones. So Sam went with the classic. Mine has chicken and you can also see that there is some avocado here on the side as well. And that looks like some mayo sauce on top. I'm just going to dig right in. I'm going right to the bottom. It is like cutting into a tower.
And with this particular causa it is really salty. You can tell they've added a lot of salt to it. But it just like, when you get that much yellow potatoes, it is just oh man it is so good. It is almost like having Mom's mashed potatoes back home or something but with much better dressings. With the chicken and the sauce and the avocado.
Okay and let's talk about the chicken. Is it shredded chicken? Like the one we had in Aji de Gallina or is it chopped. It is shredded chicken.
One more bite for quality control. Research purposes. That is good stuff.
And I am beyond excited for mine because I saw Causa Acevichado on the menu and that is a ceviche causa. Look at that. So I've got my fish, a little bit of fish that has been cooked in lime. I have my red onions, I have my hot chili peppers and of course my yellow mashed potato with a bit of mayo.
Super fancy over there. I know. And if you know how much I love ceviche this is just the perfect dish for me really.
The best of both worlds? It is so good. The lime. So much lime. And it is so tangy. And a little spicy. With those little pieces of red chili.
I do like mine but I can't leave this restaurant without at least trying the one with ceviche too.
Well, what do you think? Wow. I've never had causa with ceviche so this is a really unique experience for me. I love it. I mean I think I prefer. I do prefer yours to mine. Yeah.
And another thing I love about this dish, about causa, is all of the colors. Like look at that. The bright yellows, the purple from the onion, the red. We've got lots of greens. It is just such a colorful meal.
It is an attractive meal. It is art on a plate. Art on a plate. There you go.
Okay, so it is now time for price point. So in terms of price point that cam to 45 Soles which is $13 US dollars. Not bad value. We're both leaving really full. And what is kind of funny is that this is typically served as an appetizer not as a main. But if you eat it one per person it can totally be a main. It is so filling. It is potatoes. It is heavy. If you're in Lima or Peru definitely check out causa. It is something we highly recommend.

Peruvian Supermarket Tour + Peruvian Foods to Buy in Lima, Peru Transcript:
Well hello there Sam. Want to tell us what are we up to today? Hey guys so today we are going to do a Peruvian grocery store tour. Yes! And this is our local shop not far from where we are staying. It is Wong. Wong. Just over your shoulder. It is not a little store. It is a great big store. Two levels yes and there is a lot of unique Peruvian products. Yes. And we're going to try and show you as many of those as we possibly can.
Productos Tipicos Peruanos. First up typical Peruvian products. Yeah. There is a little bit of everything here. Some things I recognize some things I don't. I really like this display because yes you can also find these items in other parts of the store. For instance I know that these um these San Jose what are these called? Ah, turrone. Ah turrones. I've seen these turrones elsewhere I've also seen King Kongs elsewhere but they don't seem to have them today. This is really cool. You get this at the restaurants a lot. Canchita. Oh yeah. We have that for a lot of snacks at your Aunt's house too. Chifles which are plantains slices but they are like chips. Yep. There are surprisingly not sweet and not very salty either.
I know a few words. Rocoto. That is another famous one as well. Oh and my Mom just bought some of these. Yes. She was at the supermarket this morning. Tejas. These are Tejas. Oh how do I ever describe this. It is like a sweet you can have different fillings. Yeah. This can be pecans. Pecans. Pecans. Pecans. Yeah, it is basically pecans or prunes yes and then inside is like manjar blanco yes which is like the caramel spread. Yes. And then you also have it is coated in chocolate.
Alright my favorite section and probably the most colorful section by far in Wong grocery store. The fruit. So look at this. We have this is chirimoya. How would you describe that? It is like a flesh white fleshy. It is white fleshy pulp. Yes. And they put it in cakes. They do. They often have it served with manjar blanco which is similar to dulce de leche. Yeah. The caramel spread. And then look over here. Caramboya. I don't think we've had one of these. Carambolla. I don't know. I've never had that one. And lucuma.
Look Audrey this is your Grandma's favorite item for breakfast. Papaya you can get it whole or already like I guess you could say it is split in half and sort of processed for you. And that is a reasonable price. Like this is 499 or sorry 5.99. Yeah. So you're talking less than $2 US dollars for a giant slice of papaya. It is a pretty good deal.
Audrey check this out. This is also one of my favorite sections too. You can get the giant bundles of limon. The lemons. And these are great because you can make them in all of the different mixed drinks huh?
Like the chilcanos. Pisco sours. Huanaso. Exactly. And yeah you can use them for teas too. When you had a sour throat just the other day I was making you I was making you limon tea with honey and real ginger. Yes. Te de limon. Te de limon.
This is your all-time favorite breakfast in Peru. Peruvian breakfast. Yes it is. What are you getting? Tamales. So what is it?

Is LIMA Really the Food Capital of South America? ???? Eating Chicharrón, Lomo saltado & Sushi in Peru
Because we had such a good time trying Peruvian food in Lima a couple of weeks ago and we missed out on a few things, we decided to do a part #2. WATCH PART 1 HERE:
Lima (and Peru) is famous for having some of the best food in all of South America, so it definitely made sense to go out on a second trek around Lima to find some fantastic food!
To start things off, we went to a very famous sandwich place in Lima called La Lucha Sangucheria. Thankfully we didn’t have to wait too long for our food. Here we tried the Chicharron sandwich (what they are known for) and a pollo con piña y queso sandwich (Chicken with pineapple and cheese).
Next up we tried a very popular carbonated drink in Peru. This is a type of soda or pop called Inca Kola and you can pretty much get it anywhere in Lima!
After this we made our way to a sushi restaurant. This may sound a bit strange for South America, but Lima has a large Asian and Japanese population and they now have their own type of sushi which fuses both Peruvian flavours and sushi together and is known as Nikkei.
Lastly we stuck with the Asian theme but went for some Chinese Peruvian food. We went to a fast food chain called Sr. Saltado. Here we tried the famous dish Lomo Saltado, as well as a chicken dish called Tallarin Saltado.
ABOUT LIMA
Lima, the capital of Peru, lies on the country's arid Pacific coast. Though its colonial center is preserved, it's a bustling metropolis and one of South America’s largest cities. It's home to the Museo Larco collection of pre-Columbian art and the Museo de la Nación, tracing the history of Peru’s ancient civilizations. The Plaza de Armas and the 16th-century cathedral are the heart of old Lima Centro.
ABOUT PERU
Peru is a country in South America that's home to a section of Amazon rainforest and Machu Picchu, an ancient Incan city high in the Andes mountains. The region around Machu Picchu, including the Sacred Valley, Inca Trail and colonial city of Cusco, is rich in archaeological sites. On Peru’s arid Pacific coast is Lima, the capital, with a preserved colonial center and important collections of pre-Columbian art.

Our Favorite Peruvian Food at Punto Azul Restaurant in Lima, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
#eatPERU
So if this place looks familiar it is because we've made a video here once before. And to be honest we come to this restaurant pretty often whenever we're in Lima. This place is called Punto Azul and they make a delicious ceviche and some pretty tasty dishes that we're going to be sampling today. We're actually ordering all of our favorite dishes at this restaurant, so it should be a tasty meal.
So as Audrey mentioned we're going all out. We're getting literally everything we want here, so we've got Chicha Morada in a vase. That is enough for the two of us. That is the purple corn drink. Yes. Yeah. It is delicious, refreshing, sweet and then my favorite, my personal favorite beer in Peru Cusqueña. And I was drinking that quite a bit in Cusco earlier on in the year. And it is nice to be back in Lima and having a nice ice cold Cusqueña again.
So this right here is Canchita. And it is a nice little snack you can enjoy before your meal. Look at the size of your kernels. They are pretty massive. Nice and crispy. Good stuff.
I'm also drinking my Chicha. I added a little bit of lime so it is nice and sour.
So we're starting with an appetizer and today we're having Conchitas a la parmesana. Take a look over here. And just look at this thing of beauty.
And they are served in their shell. That is pretty cool. And lots of Parmesan cheese on there. We just squeezed on a little bit of lime.
There we go. All in one bite.
That is so good. The scallop is super tender and the cheese - an explosion in your mouth.
So I don't know if you remember this Audrey but it was actually your Grandma who introduced us to this dish here. Yes, she was the one who ordered this appetizer for the two of us and my parents a few months ago. So we've become big fans.
So I ordered the exact same thing every time I come to Punto Azul. Cebiche.
And that has just arrived over here. This is just the classic ceviche. It is only fish, no other seafood in there and we've got our red onions.
Um, you have your sweet potato, fresh corn and of course the tiger's milk. Which is basically like a lemon base that helps cure the fish. So yeah, this is my absolute favorite. I never get sick of ceviche.
I just love all of the flavors in your mouth. Like it is so sour and tart but then you've got your sweet potato to kind of help balance that. It is just perfection.
The perfect meal in Lima. Hands down my favorite Peruvian dish.
And now it is time for your favorite. Yes, and you can't come Punto Azul and not indulge in the seafood but I'm trying something that is kind of unique to here and that is the shrimp cheese risotto.
This rivals the risottos you find in Italy. I kid you not. Watch it Italy.
We are stuffed but we couldn't resist getting dessert. So if we have a look over here we are having a merengado de chirimoya .
So this is the meringue you see right here. This brown sauce is manjar blanco which is similar to dulce de leche. It is kind of like a caramel. And then the chirimoya is a fruit. It is a white fleshy fruit which is completely covered in whipped cream and manjar blanco. So it is kind of hard to see it. But it is absolutely delicious. This is one of my favorite Peruvian desserts.
And now it is time for price point so that came to just under 140 Soles. So that was less than $40 US dollars. And that included our Chicha Morada, our beer, our appetizer, our two mains and a dessert so not bad value. And if there is a tip I want to tell you it is to come to this restaurant early. If we had of gone 30 minutes later we would have been waiting outside with about twenty or thirty others.
This is part of our Travel in Peru video series showcasing Peruvian food, Peruvian culture and Peruvian cuisine.

Salchipapas: Peruvian Fast Food in Lima, Peru
When it comes to original Peruvian fast food / Peruvian junk food you absolutely have to try salchipapas or choripapas. Originating from the streets of Lima, Salchipapa literally means sausage (salchicha) and potato (papa). The dish is basically thinly sliced sausages and french fries with additional toppings such as cheese and egg and dipping sauces that include aji and ketchup. Choripapas is exactly the same aside from the fact chorizo is swapped for the salchicha. We had ours at Sanguchisimo in Miraflores, Lima, Peru.

Salchipapas: Peruvian Fast Food in Lima, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
#eatPERU
So for today's video we are at a place called Sanguchisimo and we're going to be eating salchipapas by popular demand. We had all of these people being like if you're in Lima you have to eat salchipapa. So we listened to you, we tracked down this place and we're excited to be trying this dish. We've actually ordered two variations of it. We're having salchipapa, which is french fries with hot dogs and we're also having choripapas, which is sausage with hot dogs. And we got both portions fully loaded with cheese and fried eggs.
So I also got myself a drink. This is a fresh fruit smoothie, it is strawberry, orange and pineapple.
So our choripapas and salchipapas have arrived. We've got the sausage one and the hot dog one. Look at those portions. That is a thing of beauty. And this is a street food snack that originated in the streets of Lima. But now it has spread all over Latin America so you can find it in other countries which is pretty cool. Different variations everywhere. And it comes with four different sausages that we've got here on this plate. We've got ketchup, mayo, mustard and of course aji. I think the aji is my favorite one. Yes, mine too. So we may need to ask for an extra container. And this is like a really nice spicy sauce that you'll find almost everywhere in Peru.
So on top here we have. Look at all of that cheese! Yeah, that is a lot of cheese and some fried egg as well. And when we were placing our order they asked us do you want your egg like well fried or do you want it a little bit runny. And there is nothing that grosses out Sam more than runny eggs.
A little messy. Wow. That is good. Give me one minute. This is wonderful. If I were a kid I feel like I would want to eat this everyday. I would be like Mom, please salchipapa for lunch.
But look at that. Yeah, it has got a lot of ingredients that kids would love. Yeah. You've got your french fries, you've got your cheese, you've got your eggs, you've got your hot dog, you've got your nice sauces. It is wonderful. And I have to say the aji at this restaurant is actually really spicy. It is the spiciest which I've had.
I'm very happy with mine. So it is now Sam's turn. And he's having the choripapa which has chorizo. So this is actually just literally identical to the one you're having except that you can see right here instead of the hot dog we've got the little slices of chorizo. So I'm going to do the same as you, I'm going to get some egg, I'm going to get some cheese, I'm going to get some fries. It is already spilling over.
So let's do the aji and a little bit of ketchup. Oh, I tainted it. Tainted the sauce. Tainted sauce.
That is really really tasty. It is like I'm definitely prefer chorizo to hot dog so this one is specifically tailored for me. I love chorizo so this is really tasty and just the fries are done to perfection. Then you add the egg and cheese and those two different sauces.
Okay, so this is what is leftover. I couldn't finish my fries. Sam did pretty well. Damage control. Yeah, as I promised I took care of mine. I'm not going to overeat and eat Audrey's too but you know what I did a good job over here.
Okay, and let's talk about the price for each of these. So these were 18 Soles. So you're looking roughly at five US dollars. Not bad value, you're going to leave feeling stuffed if you finish the whole thing like I did. This is a meal in and of itself. Absolutely. Try it if you're in Peru - especially Lima.

Lima: Peru's food revolution - Street Food
Lima, the capital of Peru, is a sprawling metropolis of about 10 million people.
Known as the city of kings, it was founded by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century and became an important centre of the Spanish empire in South America.
Over generations, people from around the world have settled in the vibrant city, resulting in a mix of cultures and cuisines.
Previously Lima was not much more than a transit point for tourists going to the ancient city of Cusco and the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu. But the tourism industry has grown and tourists are spending more time and money in Lima's restaurants.
Peru's economy may be booming and the status of the nation's cuisine on the rise, but poverty is still rife. Gloria Villanueva Reyes is one of thousands of women working in Peru's many community kitchens providing the poor with food.
I am proud that our food is now famous but I feel bad at the same time because there are too many people who don't have the chance to eat it. If it would reach everybody, happiness would be complete. Unfortunately, we only see those recipes on television, she says.
Peru is a country full of contradictions and it is struggling to define its modern self. But with the emergence of cooking schools across the country, many young Peruvians hope to be able to contribute to the new wave of Andean cuisine and create a new gastronomic future for their families and their country.
So are Peru's culinary traditions the key to a better future?
