Discover Waitomo Glowworm Caves | New Zealand
Discover the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, New Zealand's natural highlight.
World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas visitors, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occupy a high placing in the New Zealand vacation wish-list.
The glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as our expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves' historical and geological significance.
Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must see for any traveller. Enjoy the world famous boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and become a part of over 120 years of cultural and natural history.
Ruakuri Cave is Waitomo's longest underground guided walking tour.
According to Maori legend, Ruakuri Cave (rua meaning den, and kuri meaning dog) was first discovered 400-500 years ago by a young Maori hunting for birds. He was attacked by wild dogs just outside the original cave entrance. Re-opened in 2005, this cave is now an amazing example of engineering and natural cave structure.
Ruakuri Cave offers a captivating blend of Waitomo's most compelling subterranean experiences. Journey down through the spectacular spiral entrance, and marvel at the softly folding shawl-like limestone formations and crystal tapestries. Hear the distant thunder of the subterranean waterfalls and get up close to the glowworms.
With clever and innovative design, Ruakuri Cave has full wheelchair and pushchair access.
Aranui Cave is set in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, 5 minutes drive from the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It is named after Ruruku Aranui, the local Maori man who first discovered this previously hidden gem back in 1910.
Aranui Cave has a natural cave entrance and is the smallest and most delicate of Waitomo's three main caves. As a dry cave without a river running through it, it houses very little life past its entrance.
However, just inside the entrance is a colony of native New Zealand cave wetas and further into the cave is the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations.

Exploring ANCIENT Glowworm Caves | Waitomo (Lost World) New Zealand Travel Vlog 2018 (SB60)
Taking a tour of the incredible glowworm caves in Waitomo, New Zealand. The ancient, glittering underground world is truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. ► SUBSCRIBE:
Down from sound overnight, over and back in Te Anau. I am going to check out the glowworms. They've got this really old cave, I think it's approximately 12 or 14 thousand-year-old cave, so gonna go on a little, a little cruise and see the cave glowing with these glowworms. It'll be super awesome.
Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to film in there, so I'm doing a few bits of shooting up until I get into the cave but I'm not going to be able to capture the actual glowworms for you. Oh, oh the ship's already boarding, I better go. Let's have a little walk down and let's see how this caving adventure unfolds. Your caves adventure begins here.
Today we are going to be exploring the Aurora Cave system. The entire thing is 6.7 kilometers long, so today we'll only be doing 250 meters of it, down here.
Back into reality. So that was the little glowworm exploration. It kind of felt a little bit like stars in the sky, but obviously, not stars in the sky.
But it was really cool. It was quite meditative and relaxing actually, 'cause we're kind of slowly moving around on the boat, it's silent at times with, kind of, like the sound of water a little bit in the distance elsewhere in the cave and these little glowing dots all at different levels of brightness kind of just dotted around almost randomly or in little clusters on the, on the top of the cave.
So just got back to Queenstown, it's about nine o'clock roughly, and quick opportunity to jump in the gondola, head up and see if I can get up there in time for sunset. Let's go! Top of the Queenstown viewing deck, nice clouds rolling in over there, and the sun's gradually starting to set. And yes, of course, I've got a time-lapse going.

Waitomo's Lights - Avatar in Real Life - 4k
Waitomo is the centre of the universe for glow worms in New Zealand. With cave, boat and black water rafting tours, there are plenty of glow worm adventures. This time-lapse video was a made as a follow-up to our previous glowworm video Glowworms in Motion ( which won the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year - Timelapse award. We shot this one mainly for the love of spending time underground beneath the twinkling lights of glow worm galaxies. We initially thought the 60 hours spent in caves to make the first video would satisfy us but as we are finding out there is something addictive about underground photography. The more difficult the better. This one took 30 hours underground and over 3000 pictures were taken in that time. We hope you enjoy it!
To have an epic glowworm adventure yourself, head on over to and check out all the cool options.
To read the story of how we first started filming glowworms check out this blog:
The story behind this video is here:
Special thanks to Jenna for having the patience to spend hours underground with me and also Ilya Inov for subbing in for Jenna at one point to get the last sequences. Ilya may have actually enjoyed his 16 hours underground more than me. He posts his photography work here:
Also, a shout out to Mr. Glowworm Cave (Logan Doull) for making sure we didn't get lost underground and protecting us from the eels ;)
About the Series:
Living a Kiwi Life is about a Canadian couple (me and Jenna) who have lived in Canada all our lives and made the decision to move to New Zealand having never gone there before. We quit our jobs, sold our houses and cars and left everything we knew to explore an unknown.

Glow worms light up New Zealand cave
Photographer Shaun Jeffers captured mesmerizing glow worms at Raukuri Cave in Waitomo, New Zealand.
Footwhistle Tour - CaveWorld Waitomo
Enjoy a 3.5km courtesy scenic shuttle to our cave while your experienced guide reveals the rich history of Waitomo. Then, take a short walk through breath taking New Zealand native bush to the cave entrance. There, your guide lights the candles setting the scene for an intimate cave experience, where you will see glowworms up close, cave formations up close and appreciate the beauty of Footwhistle Cave (also known to local maori as Te Anaroa Cave).
The solar powered lights are kept low so you can appreciate the magnificent glow worm displays at their best, only inches away. Around a corner lie the bones of one of New Zealand's lost treasures, the ancient Moa. The soothing sound of Footwhistle cave stream flows in the darkness below.
Formation lights are especially turned on to cast a warm glow over stunning cave formations. The guide tells the stories of the insect life that live here - titiwai, the glow worm, and tuna, the eel. After enjoying a relaxed stroll through the cave, you'll be seated in Footwhistle's Cathedral to see it lit up by a dazzling magnesium torch. Although the display only lasts a few seconds, your memories of the Footwhistle Cave will last a lifetime

Waitomo Caves - Marokopa Falls - Ruakuri Walk
Finally I arrived at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves but before I made the stunning guided tour through the FootWhistle Cave,
I checked out the Ruakuri Walk. This spectacular loop walk took me through a forested gorge, past natural sculpted cliffs and under low limestone arches.
On the way towards Raglan, the surfer town of New Zealand, I checked out the Marokopa Falls, which are one of the most impressive waterfalls in New Zealand!
Enjoy :)

Day 24 Waitomo Caves
Day 24
Place: Waitomo Caves
Situation: An incredible and huge cave with extraordinary rock formations. Inside you can see like the sky full of stars but in a cave. Thousands of glowworms on the top of the cave lighting up. Why? They light up because they are hungry. The brighter they are, the more hungrier they are.
The cave is still forming, so you can hear the water falling down from the top of the cave into the river or the ground. Incredible sound.
THIS IS PEACEFUL !!!!! NATURE IS THE BEST!!!
A MUST DO
