Filmed these pretty pelicans at Lake Forbes, today. Let's hope our nature photography improves with practice. I also want to get footage of the black swans, there, and their fluffy grey chicks. Maybe next time. The swans showed up too late--just as we were leaving.
Forbes is a lovely riverside town, with the Lachlan River nearby. Quite a few nice trees, too, alongside the river; including jacarandas, silky oaks and Osage orange. Very pretty place.

Apparently Lake Forbes is where Kate Kelly died. She was Ned Kelly's sister. Wikipedia says: On 6 October 1898 Kate was reported missing. Her drowned body was found eight days later in a lagoon on Condobolin Road near Forbes. It is believed she drowned in Lake Forbes, a small pond situated in the middle of Forbes, while saving an Aboriginal child that was in trouble during a flood of the lake. She was buried in Forbes Cemetery, aged 36.

Pelican Sailing on Lake Forbes, Forbes, New South Wales, Australia
Forbes is a lovely NSW riverside town, with the Lachlan River nearby. Very pretty place. Here is a pelican sailing about Lake Forbes. As well as those fishing birds that look like shags or cormorants, or something, I espied at least two tortoises--or are they land turtles?--basking in the sun here. (Can you see them too?) Let nothing disturb their peace!

Here's a nice postcard taken today from Forbes, NSW, Australia. A very nice riverside town in the Lachlan Valley, NSW. This section is called Lake Forbes, and beyond the bridge, there, you can see the old watertower in the background. (I recall there is a similar watertower on the hill in Grenfell, NSW, too.) Forbes has very nice waterbird activity--including black swans and pelicans and things. I've even seen a platypus in waters around Forbes. There are very nice blue jacaranda trees in Forbes in summer, so they are something to recommend the town as well. Lots of lush and leafy golden robineas planted in the main streets of the town, that make it cool and shady on hot days in summer.

The Streets of Forbes - Forbes Primary Schools Choir 2003
We recorded the Forbes Combined Primary Schools Choir in 2003 as part of a project on the rich history of folksong in Forbes and district.
2015 is the 150th year of the shooting of bushranger, Ben Hall near Forbes. He is buried in the Forbes cemetery not far from the grave of Ned Kelly's sister, Kate.
One of the best known bushranger ballads in Australia and overseas is “The Streets of Forbes” with its haunting melody and strong lyrics.
A web search for “The Streets of Forbes” will bring up many versions of this song and in many styles and genres and from many countries of the world.
From bluegrass to brass bands to Paul Kelly and even a rock rendition by well-known group ‘Weddings, Parties, Anything’ the song is certainly well covered and well recognised as a leading Australian folk song.
I particularly like our version from the children of Forbes.

Shags and Pelicans at Lake Forbes, Forbes, NSW, Australia
What are these beautiful wet sleek waterbirds? Are they shags or cormorants or something? They look like fishing birds, and appear to swim underwater--unlike their pelican friends who swim on top of the water. This footage was taken by Lake Forbes, Forbes, NSW, Australia. A pretty riverside town with plenty of waterbird activity. (Yes, and even some platypus activity, too--but not so common a sight!)

The Australian west was not unlike the US west, it was a wild untamed wilderness with both rich and poor farmers and many in the US like the Daltons, Jessie James and the Hole in the Wall gang rode the wild side. Ben Hall, Frank Gardiner, John Gilbert, Dan Morgan and years later Ned Kelly shot across the sky like a shooting star only to burn out at the hands of the police and civilians who once game enough rode the coattails of the law for blood money.

While driving down to Merimbula from Queanbeyan, along the East Coast of Australia, we decided a stop over in Braidwood to visit their infamous bakery, which was in order.
While there we figured we'd explore it and do a little filming and visit their cemetery for a Spirit Box session.
Braidwood is nestled in Yowie country (Australia's BigFoot), the town boomed in the Gold Rush era and was known for blood thirsty bushrangers.

Lets look back to an early time of a gold rush that shaped NSW - Hillend & Tambaroora
An early look back on the historic gold mining towns of Hill End and Tambaroora courtesy of History Hill living museum
Hill End - In the 1850s the Hill End area was known as Bald Hills. In 1860 a village was proclaimed, first as Forbes, then in 1862, it was altered to Hill End. In the early 1870s, Hill End took over Tambaroora as the main town in the area.
Bernhardt Holtermann with the 630lb rock containing more than 75 percent gold from Hill End, unearthed in 1872 Hill End owes its existence to the New South Wales gold rush of the 1850s, and at its peak in the early 1870s it had a population estimated at 8,000 served by two newspapers, five banks, eight churches, and twenty-eight pubs.
The town's decline when the gold gave out was dramatic: by 1945 the population was 700. At the 2006 census, Hill End had a population of 166, which now has dropped to 80 people during the year 2017.
In October 1862 the Telegraph line reached Hill End (Tambaroora) from Bathurst via Sofala, the Telegraph Office opened for telegraph messages bringing the remote town into instant contact with the rest of the Colony. Prior to this event, communications took 12 hours by the mail stagecoach to Bathurst.
After delays due to lack of materials a telephone line was installed into Hill End in 1914; after 60 years of Morse code telegraph messages, Hill End could now speak to adjacent towns and even Sydney if necessary.
In 1923 a telephone exchange was installed at the Hill End Post Office; before this calls could only be made by the Post Office to other towns. The exchange allowed new telephones installed in businesses and private homes to connect locally and to other towns.
Tambaroora - Up until the later part of 1852 the area near the junction of Golden Gully and Tambaroora Creek in the vicinity of the future Commissioners Camp later known as Camp Hill was referred to by correspondence and early miners as The Stock Yards, another name associated with the future Town was Samuels Flat or Samuels Field, this was located immediately to the west of the Commissioners Camp between Golden Gully and Moonlight Gully/Creek and attracted rushes of miners with reports of gold being found there on more than one occasion. The 1852 Pastoral Map is annotated with Samuels Flat in the same area that a Stockyard was located, this Stockyard would have been Oakes Stockyard as it is mentioned by name in relation to rushes to the area.
The roads in the district which were already established for pastoral usage merged in the vicinity of the future town, the road later known as the Escort Track entered the town at Clarke Street, the road to Cummings and Bundy Stations was at Mcmahon Street. There was also the road to Dirt Holes Creek and its continuance to Louisa Creek (present day Hargraves) and Richardsons Point (present day Windeyer) on its way north to Mudgee. A deciding factor in the siting of the Commissioners Camp would be its central location to the surrounding local goldfields of the Lower Turon, Bald Hills Creek, Golden Gully, The Stock Yards, Tambaroura Creek, Dirt Holes Creek and Green Valley
This merging of tracks would have seen a concentration of those whose interest was in commercialization and not prospecting, hotels and stores soon occupied prime positions along the road between Golden Gully and Dirt Hole Creek with a scattering of Hotels and Stores in each of the local goldfields. Throughout 1852 an inrush of miners and associated industries saw the name Tambaroora Proper appear as a reference to this area, the Proper initially being added to distinguish it from the area of the same name.
The town was a major hub for the gold mining and supporting industries in the district, its significance declined in the late 1860s when alluvial mining waned and later at the beginning of the 1870s when the focus moved from alluvial mining to reef mining on Hawkins Hill and around the young pup Hill End.
Many revivals followed, the economic depression of the 1890s had a severe impact on the country and the world, many feeling the hardship made their way back to the fields to try their luck. In the 1890's an attempt was made by the government to revive the town, adjustments to the town boundary in the north east corner of the town saw new Lots surveyed and placed on the market, thou with little success, previously unsold Lots from the 1860s and 70s were once again advertised for sale on numerous occasions, and a new General Cemetery was surveyed and dedicated.
