The annual mean precipitation in the areas along the Kumano River is about 2,800 mm, about 1.6 times higher than that of Japan as a whole---1,700 mm. Water nurtures rich nature in this place, but at the same time has repeatedly caused disasters. In September last year, Typhoon 12 (Talas), which brought great damage in Wakayama Prefecture, leaving more than 60 persons dead or missing, flooded the Kumano River, also damaging the Kumano Sanzan by flooding or landslides. This time the precipitation during the five days from August 30 to September 4, 2011, was about 2,000 mm, a record downpour.
One year after the typhoon disaster, Kumano Sanzan, now recovering its original beauty, is greeting pilgrims and tourists as it did before the disaster.

Hiking down Usui Pass - Old railway, lake and waterfall!
On the 4th day of my rail journey, instead of spending the majority of the day on a train I spent it hiking between two stations instead! On the way I come across an old rail line, a beautiful lake and a secluded waterfall!
(Note that the large majority of the hike, say 4ish hours, is on the road on Usui Pass which isn't shown much as it's just endless curves)

This mausoleum is coupled with a Buddhist temple and a forest of wild cedars protects the whole complex. Taiyu-in houses the body of Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-1651), the grandson of the first shogun. A shaded path marked out with lanterns leads to the mausoleum, whose oratory is surveyed by 140 dragons and a Chinese lion. The main hall, which precedes the tomb (closed to the public), has an abundance of ornamentation depicting flying dragons encircling a phoenix.
