Red and Fallow Deer at Woburn Abbey Deer Park - October 2012
Red and Fallow Deer at Woburn Abbey Deer Park
It's autumn... one of the most colourful moments of the year, with the leaves turning brilliants shades of colour before falling on the ground... allowing us the chance to walk through them, listening to the swishing sound as we feel the cool crisp air against us...
For Red Deer and Fallow Deer, early autumn is rutting time, when the Stags show off their mighty power to each other, their huge antlers shining brightly in the sun, they posture and they bellow, and they strut and they take charge of their harems of female deer... you can really feel the energy from these mighty animals... especially when you are surrounded by them... as we were in Woburn Deer Park...
The day was nice and sunny but blustery but even through this was a massive sound of the bellowing, sadly the microphone was bombarded with wind noise and although there is plenty on the original sound to the film, I have chosen to mix and create a soundtrack as close to the experience we had during the day
The spectacle of the rutting season is such a part of natures autumn it helps charge you with emotion and adrenalin for the winter ahead, the sheer size of some of these stags was amazing, at the end of this film I have included the large fallow deer stag, that shot was over 200 metres away, he just oozed stature and power... he wasn't interested in even fighting with the younger stags, he was content just to lie down and enjoy the sun...:)
Woburn Deer park has so much more to share and we will go back again sometime soon, to try and see some of the other deer that are there, but I would recommend making a note to get to the rutting season next year, because it is a spectacle you just can't help to get immersed in :)
Pallant House Gallery - Chichester - Art Gallery - Listasafn í Englandi
Art Gallery - Pallant House Gallery 9 North Pallant, Chichester, West Sussex, England, PO19 1TJ. - We make a loving by what we get, but we make a live by what we give. Winston Churchill.
Pallant House Gallery is an art gallery in Chichester, West Sussex, England. It houses one of the best collections of 20th century British art in the world. The Gallery's collection is founded on works left to the city of Chichester by Walter Hussey in 1977, on his retirement from the position as Dean of Chichester Cathedral which he held from 1955. Hussey's collection included works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, John Piper, Ceri Richards and Graham Sutherland. Hussey stipulated that the collection must be shown in Pallant House, a Grade 1 listed Queen Anne townhouse built in 1712 for wine merchant Henry Lisbon Peckham and his wife Elizabeth. It is a fine, brick-built building with large windows, with stone ostriches from the Peckham family arms guarding the entrance gateway, and a fine oak staircase inside. Its urbane design from a London architect was the subject of a suit in Chancery, for William Smart, mason of Chichester, provided a design about 1711, but the Peckhams went to London and obtained another design, designated the London modell in court papers. The architect was not identified. The building had been used as Council offices since 1919. The building was restored in 1979, and the gallery opened in 1982. It has been managed by an independent trust since 1985. The Gallery's collection has been augmented by other donations. In 1989, property developer Charles Kearley donated works by British artists such as John Piper and Ben Nicholson and European artists such as Paul Cézanne, André Derain, Fernand Léger, and Gino Severini. In 2006, architect Sir Colin St John Wilson donated works by Michael Andrews, Peter Blake, David Bomberg, Patrick Caulfield, Lucian Freud, Richard Hamilton, R. B. Kitaj, Eduardo Paolozzi, Walter Sickert and Victor Willing. Many of the works were acquired directly from the artists, who were friends of Wilson: indeed, he designed homes for several. Other works are displayed on long-term loan, many on the understanding that they will be donated to the gallery in due course. As well as modern British art, the Gallery has one of the world's outstanding collections of 18th century Bow porcelain, donated by Geoffrey Freeman. A new wing was opened in June 2006, designed by Sir Colin Wilson and Long & Kentish. The £8.6 million project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, the local council, and other donors. See more:

Exploring the Delights of Burton Mill Pond in West Sussex
Julia Hartley and I are taking an enthusiastic stroll around the picturesque Burton Mill Pond, a holding pond for the once productive mill of the same name in the Burton Park Estate.
Passing from the old lodge house, we find evidence of its former glory in a delightful avenue of ancient and colossal sweet chestnut trees.
The pond is just south of Petworth and close to the village of Duncton. It is also part of Burton Park Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) designated nationally important for its wetland habitats, rare plants, birdlife, and invertebrate populations. Chingford Pond is designated a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI).

A Walk Around the Village of Tillington in West Sussex
Today I am looking at the delightful village of Tillington in West Sussex. I have two videos of this lovely place. In this one Mike Wheller is my guide. He used to be the publican at The Horse Guards, back in the day when 'it was a real pub', as he says. It is still a lovely place. I had a pint there with him after filming.
The village is steeped in history. June Whitfield, who recently died, is buried in the churchyard. The buildings are ancient and have many stories connected with them. Join me for a gentle stroll around.
In the next video, Gerald Gresham Cooke shall be taking up the church tower - not to missed!

ARTIST STATEMENT
“My technique is spontaneous. I want to capture the moment in my painting, intrigued by the patterns created by sunlight, shadows and shapes at that time of day.
When I paint structures, I am inspired by those that hold history. Ones that have been part of the landscape for a long time - ones that may be gone soon. America's rural landscape influences the majority of my work - structures that have a weathered history are intriguing, lonely and a nostalgic expression that inspires me. Shapes, light, shadows, and the magnificence of color are what move me to paint. I want to capture the beauty of history in an old farmhouse or barn, before the ever changing landscape changes again forever.”
Exploring The Serpent Trail from Fittleworth in West Sussex
Today I am exploring a special and fascinating long distance trail that runs through the heart of West Sussex.
The Serpent Trail is a 64-mile long distance footpath. It runs from Haslemere to Petersfield, which are 11 miles apart in a straight line, by a route which is designed to join up the many heathland areas on greensand in the western Weald. The path takes its name both from its serpentine shape and from passing through habitat of all three British species of snake (adder, grass snake and smooth snake).
I have joined the trail half way through at Fittleworth and I am heading north.

The Bald Explorer Gallery Show! (Ep3)
The Gallery Show today comes from Boxgrove Priory near Chichester in West Sussex. A Saxon church had existed on the site before the Conquest. The Priory was founded for three Benedictine monks in the 12th century, and was owned by the Lessay Abbey in Normandy.

Timothy's Christmas Karaoke
This holiday, Timothy Langston invites an old friend to his gallery for a festive sing song and some mince pies.
Timothy! How are you?
Ah! how are you old friend? Such a pleasure to see you!
Not so much of the old! Well I was in the area and I remember what you said
THERE'S ALWAYS A DISCOVERY
So ... I did wonder can we make a trip to the magical forest - last year you said you'd take me again
Oh good man I'd love to, but this year I've been busy setting up a new gallery in Petworth
In Sussex?! How beautiful!
Well I'm very excited and I hope it will mean many more discoveries for all my clients. Look, I tell you what. Since you're here Let's sing some festive carols! I'll get some mince pies for afterwards. How does that sound?
What a marvellous idea!
On the first day of Christmas
my true love sent to me:
A Partridge in a Pear Tree
I tell you what, I'll lead the singing
God Rest Ye Merry
Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's pow'r
When we were gone astray
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
Oh tidings of comfort and joy
More, more!
Time for one of my favourites!
Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the Feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gathering winter fuel
How about a chorus of this one, which can be traced back to 16th century England!:
We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
What fun! This is a hoot!
Have a mince pie
The table of feasting!
Merry Christmas Timothy Langston
Merry Christmas to you and all our friends around the world

Designed by Philip Webb, the house is one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris & Co. interiors creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The house is dressed for a weekend stay in 1925, so you can imagine you are a guest of the family.
A major restoration of the 5-hectare (12-acre) hillside garden showcases year-round seasonal highlights and an award-winning plant collection. On the wider estate, footpaths lead out into the woodlands, Ashdown Forest and wider High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Capability Brown’s Most Famous Gardens and Landscapes in Britain
Capability Brown: Designing the English Landscape
On Sale: November 1, 2016
Publisher: Rizzoli
Price: $65.00
ISBN: 978-0-8478-4883-6
In celebration of his 300th year, the new book Capability Brown: Designing the English Landscape is the definitive survey of Lancelot Capability Brown’s most famous gardens and landscapes in Britain.
Widely acknowledged as the most influential landscape designer of his age, Brown was to England what Frederick Law Olmsted was to America—responsible for shaping the very ideal of the nation’s parkland. Brown’s ambition was to bring out of a landscape the best of its potential rather than impose his own ideas upon it. So natural are his designs, and so perfectly do they complement the houses within them, that for many a Capability Brown landscape is the epitome of the English estate. His gardens and parklands—as much as the houses themselves—would become icons of British country life.
Published to coincide with the tercentenary of his birth, this remarkable book illuminates fifteen of Brown’s most celebrated landscapes, including rarely seen archival drawings that shed light on Brown’s process. This book serves as a guide to Britain’s most beloved landscapes and an exploration of the masterful mind behind their creation.

The Bald Explorer - An Abandoned Canal - Preview
This is a preview of the forthcoming Bald Explorer episode - soon to feature on the Community Channel.
In this preview, I am exploring the Shrewsbury and Newport Canal, abandoned in the 1940's when many of the English navigations were either closed down or left to go to rack and ruin in the countryside. The S&N Canal Trust are trying to restore it to its former glory and open it up again to the community.
This short video should give you a taster for the final episode, in which I shall be discovering some of the important heritage sites along the route of the 24 mile canal. Filming is being under taken now and the final film shoudl be ready for public viewing in January 2013.
Meanwhile, check out the websites: at BaldExplorer.com and sncanal.org.uk

St Ives School for Girls Haslemere
We are non-selective school with an outstanding record of guiding our pupils into their first choice of senior school, many with scholarships awarded. Last year’s Independent Schools Inspectorate report provides evidence of our achievements. We are extremely pleased with this report which demonstrates what a wonderful school St Ives is. The calibre of the education the children receive here, from early years all the way through to Year 6, has always been known to be strong. This report provides the external validation to evidence what people locally know to be true.
