Soil ecologist Dr Christine Jones offers an accessible, inspiring perspective on the pressing worldwide challenge of restoring topsoil. Over several decades, Christine has worked with innovative farmers and graziers to implement regenerative land management practices that enhance biodiversity, increase productivity, nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, water quality and community and catchment health. Following a highly respected career in public sector R&D, Christine founded 'Amazing Carbon' in 2004 and organised a series of ‘Managing the Carbon Cycle’ forums throughout Australia to promote the benefits of soil carbon. In recent years she has gained international recognition as a speaker, presenting at workshops, field days, seminars and conferences throughout Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Western Europe, Central America, USA and Canada.

A second field day complementary to the annual Soil Symposium. Our host and local industries are on a mission to increase the understanding and acceptance of Regenerative Farming practices. Dr Christine Jones together with Farm HQ will discuss on-farm multi-species cover crop strategies, manufacturing compost, soil inoculations and bio-fertiliser applications.
This event is an initiative of Reef Catchments through funding from the Australian Government National Landcare Program and additional support from the Queensland Government Water Quality Program.

End of Season update. challenges and how they were overcome.
Surprise at the end of this video. It's not easy producing a garden for self reliance, and forest living that will sustain a family for living off the land in an off grid cabin life style.
Now that the forest garden in the wilderness is put to bed for the winter, Maureen has an autumn report on the lasagna style bed, and how she overcame a few challenges she faced during her first garden season at their homestead on 40 acres in the wilderness of Ontario Canada.
She includes a recap of the first season of their forest garden from clearing the land to preparing the beds for next spring
Maureen walks you through the challenges and how she overcame them, and explains some important information that all new gardeners will be interested in, as many of the challenges are common to most gardeners. She explains how a lasagna style bed solved on of their biggest challenges. This forest garden was an experiment of sorts for Glenn and Maureen as it's the first garden at their wilderness homestead. They faced a few pests which proved to be a challenge. Maureen shares the lessons she learned on how to manage tomato plants for garden pest prevention, like blight and stink bugs, and how to get rid of them.
Hoping for an extended autumn, Glenn and Maureen have a few plans for changes to the lasagna style beds this autumn, to improve the forest garden in the 2020 garden season.

However, if not managed carefully, motorized recreation can damage both the land and the resources that visitors come to enjoy, Brett said. Each year millions of off-highway vehicles travel Americas national forests legally and sensibly on designated roads and trails. A small, but growing number of irresponsible OHV users are threatening the health of all national forests by driving far off-trail and damaging fragile plants, wetlands and ecosystems.
Operating a motor vehicle on National Forest System roads, National Forest System trails and in areas on National Forest System lands carries a greater responsibility than operating a vehicle in a city or other developed setting. Not only must the motor vehicle operators know and follow all applicable traffic laws, but they need to show concern for the environment as well as other forest users. The misuse of motor vehicles is subject to state traffic law, including state requirements for licensing, registration and operation of the vehicle.
Motor vehicle use, especially off-highway vehicle use, involves inherent risks that may cause property damage, serious injury and possibly death. Riders should drive cautiously and anticipate rough surfaces and features such as mud, vegetation and water crossings common to remote driving conditions.
Participants voluntarily assume full responsibility for these damages, risks and dangers. Motor vehicle operators should take care at all times to protect themselves and those under their responsibility.
Much of the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas are remote, and medical assistance may not be readily available. Cellular phones do not work in many areas of the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas. Operators should take adequate food, water, first aid supplies and other equipment appropriate for the conditions and expected weather.
Always remember to respect private land. Protect your privilege. Stay on designated roads and trails and in designated areas.

Transforming a front lawn into a productive veggie patch in Glen Iris - Time lapse video
We recently transformed this front yard into a productive veggie patch. Michelle had contacted me wanting us to assist with making her garden more productive. When I recommended the front lawn as the best spot to grow veggies, she didn't hesitate to say yes! I love the way this time lapse video captures the enthusiasm and energy when the whole family join in at the end, to help us plant the seedlings and seeds. We're going to be visiting this garden in Glen Iris quite regularly. I'm really looking forward to seeing it flourish.
