Εξερευνώντας την Εύβοια. Χιλιαδού-Στενή-Χαλκίδα | Exploring Central Evia. Chiliadou-Steni-Chalkida
Craving for a getway. We up early, packed our gear and drove away without really having decided where we 'll head to. Following the highway north, we came up with an idea to head to Chalkida City, capital of Evia Island, not more than 80 kms away from Athens. We booked our hotel room online to stay overnight, while driving there. Reaching Chalkida rather early, we had pleanty of time to explore the Nothern part of Evia, the side facing the Aegean archipelago, following the route crossing Evia from south to north and passing through the high mountain Dirfis, with its Alpic landscapes, the picturesque village of Steni and end up to Chiliadou beach. After sunset on our way back to Chalikida we stopped at Steni village to a fabulous tavern for dinner. By reaching Chalkida we reorganised ourselves and went out to stroll, enjoy the city by night and watch the opening of the older bridge which is an attraction to visitors. Unfortunatelly we had a dissapointing surprise...
Watch some rear aerial shots of the the Euripus Bridge or Chalcis Bridge, a 694.5 meters total length and a deck thickness of 45 cm, the thinner the world, cable-stayed suspension bridge opened in 1993 which joins Chalkida to the mainland.
Also don't miss other aerial shots through a centuries old plane trees forest at Dirfis mountain and the beautiful Chiliadou beach.
This is our Vlog itinerary for day 1 and this exploration completes with our Vlog for day 2 which follows. Don't miss it also, cause it includes cinematic captures and majestic views.

Το ελληνικό Όρος Φουτζιγιάμα: Η χιονισμένη Δίρφυς! // Greek Fujiyama mountain
Dirfi (Greek: Δίρφη, older form Δίρφυς - Dirfys) is a mountain in the central part of the island of Euboea, Greece. At 1,743 m elevation, it is the highest mountain of Euboea. Its summit is 4 km west of Stropones, 5 km north of Steni Dirfyos and 28 km northeast of the city of Chalcis. There are forests on the lower slopes while most of the mountain is covered with grassland. Some beautiful trekking paths are located on Dirfi mountain.
Mount Fuji (富士山 Fujisan, IPA: [ɸɯꜜdʑisaɴ] (About this soundlisten)), located on Honshū, is the highest volcano in Japan at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft), 2nd-highest peak of an island (volcanic) in Asia, and 7th-highest peak of an island in the world.[1] It is a dormant stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707–1708.[4][5] Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometers (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped for about 5 months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers.
Mount Fuji is one of Japan's Three Holy Mountains (三霊山 Sanreizan) along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku. It is also a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and one of Japan's Historic Sites. It was added to the World Heritage List as a Cultural Site on June 22, 2013.According to UNESCO, Mount Fuji has inspired artists and poets and been the object of pilgrimage for centuries. UNESCO recognizes 25 sites of cultural interest within the Mount Fuji locality. These 25 locations include the mountain and the Shinto shrine, Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha, as well as the Buddhist Taisekiji Head Temple founded in 1290, later immortalized by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
Etymology
The current kanji for Mount Fuji, 富 and 士, mean wealth or abundant and a man of status respectively. However, the name predates kanji, and these characters are ateji, meaning that they were selected because their pronunciations match the syllables of the name but do not carry a meaning related to the mountain.
The origin of the name Fuji is unclear, having no recording of it being first called by this name. A text of the 9th century, Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, says that the name came from immortal (不死 fushi, fuji) and also from the image of abundant (富 fu) soldiers (士 shi, ji)[8] ascending the slopes of the mountain.[9] An early folk etymology claims that Fuji came from 不二 (not + two), meaning without equal or nonpareil. Another claims that it came from 不尽 (not + to exhaust), meaning neverending.
In Shinto mythology
In Shinto mythology, Kuninotokotachi (国之常立神?, Kuninotokotachi-no-Kami, in Kojiki)(国常立尊?, Kuninotokotachi-no-Mikoto, in Nihon Shoki) is one of the two gods born from something like a reed that arose from the soil when the earth was chaotic. According to the Nihon Shoki, Konohanasakuya-hime, wife of Ninigi, is the goddess of Mount Fuji, where Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha is dedicated for her.
History
South Wind, Clear Sky woodblock print by Hokusai, 19th century
Mount Fuji is an attractive volcanic cone and a frequent subject of Japanese art especially after 1600, when Edo (now Tokyo) became the capital and people saw the mountain while traveling on the Tōkaidō road. The mountain is mentioned in Japanese literature throughout the ages and is the subject of many poems.[15] One of the modern artists who depicted Fuji in almost all her works was Tamako Kataoka.
