Ae Forest, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland - amazing views
Here are some amazing views for you fro Ae Forest. Scotland truly has some of the most beautiful spots.
Scotland Shorts - The Forests of South Scotland
The south of Scotland is a picturesque swathe of the country with plenty of beautiful forests and ancient woodlands to explore. Ignite your senses on a woodland walk, look closely to see what plants and wildlife you’ll find, feel the rush of adrenaline as you speed downhill on a mountain bike or wait until nightfall to see the darkest of skies lit up with thousands of shining stars.
The Tweed Valley Forest Park and Galloway Forest Park
At less than an hour from Edinburgh, the Tweed Valley Forest Park in the Scottish Borders is the perfect place to get out amongst nature. Stretching from Peebles to Selkirk, following the valley of the River Tweed, seven beautiful forests make up the forest park. Follow some of the beautiful walking routes, find the perfect place to stop for a picnic, zoom along the thrilling trails on a mountain bike or have a tree-top adventure at Go Ape.
Heading west, the Galloway Forest Park in Dumfries & Galloway is Britain’s largest forest park and is home to dramatic ancient woodland, magnificent scenery, and an astonishing variety of local wildlife. It’s also a Dark Sky Park, with some of the clearest night skies you’ll find anywhere. Follow trials through the trees, meet the residents at the Wild Goat Park and Red Deer Range, test the mountain bike trails and wait till after dark to see stars, planets and even the milky way with just your naked eye.
7stanes Mountain Biking
If you love an adrenaline rush, the south of Scotland is the ideal place to find one, with eight 7Stanes Mountain Biking Centres; Glentrool, Glentress, Dalbeattie, Ae, Mabie, Kirroughtree, Newcastleton and Innerleithen, which are spread out across Dumfries & Galloway and the Scottish Borders. It’s a great place for mountain biking enthusiasts with hundreds of trails and routes that are ideal for complete beginners, as well as experienced riders.
Dark Skies and Stargazing
There are many accessible stargazing spots in Scotland, but you can’t do much better than the Galloway Forest Park for prime stargazing conditions. Britain’s first Dark Sky Park - the clarity here will positively dazzle you. Spanning 75,000 hectares, very few people live within the park which means it enjoys some of the darkest skies in Europe. See an astounding 7,000 stars and planets - including the lustrous bow of light that is the Milky Way - with just your naked eye. Be sure to plan return visits to witness the constellations slowly shift with the Earth’s orbit around the sun.

The Village and Bridge of Ae, Dumfries & Galloway
Ae is Scotlands youngest village with the UK's shortest placename, built by the Forestry Commission circa 1947. The village is not solely occupied by forestry workers these days and has a primary school that also serves local farms. No shops are present however Dumfries is not too far away. Bridge of Ae was a hamlet on the now diverted main road to Dumfries.

Ae Forest & Dalbeattie, Seven Stanes, Scotland February 2019
The Ginger One has finally got his finger out from where he normally keeps it (shudder) and organised his long-awaited Scotland trip. A few months later than promised, in the False Spring of February 2019, we were crossing the border, to the land of Irn Bru and those ever so tasty breakfast haggis slices. The village with the shortest name in Great Britain is today's destination, Ae, or more specifically, it's forest and the next day was to be Dalbeattie. The weather was better than the many summer days, there was beer, pies and a night out in Dumfries, two excellent rides with (mainly failed) attempts at stuff way out of the league of gentlemen on the verge of middle-age.

Old Photographs Lochmaben Dumfries and Galloway Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Lochmaben; Scottish Gaelic: Loch Mhabain, a small town and civil parish and site of a once important castle, located four miles west of Lockerbie, in Dumfries and Galloway. This area has been inhabited since earliest times due to its strategic position on the routes from England to Scotland and Ireland. After the Roman departure from the area around Dumfries the locale had various forms of visit by Picts, Saxons, Scots and Danes. At some point in the 13th century the Bruces built a castle, probably a Keep, at Lochmaben, the remains of which now lie under a golf course. It is claimed that King Robert I of Scotland was born there, which is why the town adopted the motto From us is born the liberator king on its coat of arms. This claim cannot be ruled out, but his birthplace was more likely Turnberry Castle. Bruce certainly battled the English over this area during the Wars of Scottish Independence. The Battle of Lochmaben Fair was fought on 22 July 1484: a force of 500 light horsemen led by Alexander Stewart, Duke of Albany and James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas invaded Scotland, but were defeated. The town prospered and become a Royal Burgh in 1447, and a Royal Charter in 1579. Though its importance waned, it had sufficient resources to build a substantial Tolbooth, later the Town Hall, in 1723. The fountain was presented to the Royal Burgh by a sister of the Laird of Halleaths in 1911 in memory of King Edward the Seventh. Originally located in front of the Bruce Statue in the High Street, it moved to its present position at Townhead. The Combination Hospital here was also known as the Sanatorium. The railway came in 1863, with Lochmaben a stop on the Dumfries to Lockerbie line, and brought easy communication both north and south. It closed to passengers in 1952 and to freight in 1966. Corncockle Quarry was a large and historically important sandstone quarry near Lochmaben tone from here was used in the late Victorian era to build tenements in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and also to construct brownstones in New York , America
