Popeye Village and Red Tower Walk Malta
Popeye Village and Red Tower Walk Malta, another video in my Malta Tourist Information series. Please take a look at them all at
Malta is blessed with Walking trails covering the whole Island, with towers and historic site dotted everywhere.
So it was an easy choice while staying in Mellieha Bay to take advantage of such wonderful open countryside and combine a walk with a visit the Red Tower overlooking Mellieha Bay and Ghadira Nature Reserve to the South and Cirkewa Ferry Terminal, Gozo and Comino to the North, then on to Popeye Village Theme Park and former film set across the other side of the Island in Anchor Bay next to the Anchor Bay dive site. About a seven mile walk in total.
We started the walk by entering the Foresta 2000 Woodland Project, hidden away behind a gateway just 50 yards North of the Riserva bus stop opposite the public toilets at the road entrance to Mellieha Bay Hotel.
It’s a fairly steep climb in places, but steps and a hand rail make it easier to navigate.
Through colourful wild flowers and trees we climbed through a diversity of habitats with stunning views across all of the North of Malta until we came upon an abandoned hotel with just a few walls left standing which the local graffiti artists had made full use of.
A short way further, we joined the roadway up to the Red Tower where we stopped off to explore with just a £2 admission charge.
From the roof of the Red Tower it seems like you can look down on the whole of Malta.
It let us identify the walking route to our next destination, Popeye Village Theme Park in Anchor Bay.
This former film set used in 1980 as the Popeye Film location is now a tourist attraction with water based activities in Anchor Bay, and lots of Popeye related activities for young and old alike.
So that means we were half way through our walking tour and headed back to Mellieha Bay skirting Majjistral Nature and History Park, Malta's first natural national park near Golden Bay containing a number of historical and archaeological sites.
With 430 different plant species recorded, 12 species of breeding birds, bats, hedgehogs and rabbits, it’s a popular destination for visitors.
Along the ridge we returned to Mellieha Bay, enjoying the amazing views again, and returned to our hotel having walked and strolled about seven miles in total.
