FORGOTTEN WORLD ADVENTURES TAUMARUNUI
We did the 10 tunnel tour on a cold, wet spring day. The temperature was forcast to get to a high of 10C and I dont think it even got that high!
Riding the recumbent style tandem railbikes was a great way to experience this historic region of New Zealand.
We finished up cold and wet...but this really was a fun adventure!
Thanks to Winston and all the FWA Team.

Forgotten World Highway & Owhango Lagoon - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 39: Today we are road tripping down the Forgotten World Highway after checking out the Owhango Lagoon! That’s two activities today out of 365 Days: 365 Activities.
Yesterday - Day 38 -
Tomorrow – Day 40 –
About this video:
Today is day 39 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year and today we are starting a road trip down the wonderful, mysterious and rugged Forgotten World Highway!
Before we hit the road though, there is one more place we want to check out before leaving the Taumarunui area: the Owhango Lagoon. Thanks to a recommendation from the Forgotten World Motel, we find a beautiful bush walk around the Owhango Lagoon which leads to the tranquil Owhango Lagoon itself.
After that, we hit the road onto the Forgotten World Highway where we are treated to countryside scenery, rolling hills and a classic New Zealand traffic jam: sheep. Things get more rough and rugged as we reach the gravel road and go through the Tangarakau Gorge. The scenery of the Forgotten World Highway is stunning, but man this road is rough!
Finally, we reach our final destination on the Forgotten World Highway this evening – a place called Tangarakau, otherwise known as Ghost Town. So we meet our Forgotten World Highway farmstay hosts and hop in a 4x4 up some mountains to check out some awesome Forgotten World Highway scenery before sunset. We have dinner with the farmstay family and get ready for more Forgotten World Highway adventures tomorrow!
What do you think of the Forgotten World Highway? Is it a New Zealand road trip you would do?

About this video:
Today’s adventure begins in Taumarunui at the base of Forgotten World Adventures. We are heading up to a railway line where we are going to be given a specially designed rail bike to make a journey through the Forgotten World of the Whanganui National Park.
Join us as we explore some beautiful New Zealand countryside as we are rail biking with Forgotten World Adventures. We go through long dark tunnels, over bridges, through peaceful farmland and native bush on a one day tour with Forgotten World Adventures. The trip can be extended over 140km down the Forgotten World Highway.
We have a few hilarious moments with goats and cows as we are rail biking with Forgotten World Adventures, as well as seeing some cute native birds along the way. Getting on a rail bike and travelling through the Forgotten World is an activity in New Zealand we will never forget!

Stratford - Whangamomona - Tongariro Nationalpark
From Stratford I started my trip towards the Waitomo Caves. I decided to take the famous Forgotten World Highway, which was only 150 kilometres long, but a highly memorable driving journey.
The only village on this Highway was Whangamomona where I could get a stamp for my passport at the historic hotel because it's a own republic in New Zealand!
I ended up at a lost campground in the middle of the Tongariro Nationalpark where I had the coldest night since I'm in New Zealand.
Enjoy this video :)

Forgotten World Highway is one of 10 themed highways in New Zealand. It starts in Stratford and goes through picturesque regions of Taranaki and Ruapehu, ending up in Taumarunui. Only 150kms long, it is one of the most unique tourist attractions in New Zealand.
There are many points of interest on the Forgotten World Highway including beautiful town of Stratford, independent republic of Whangamomona (and historic Whangamomona Hotel), Mt Damper Falls, old tunnel, Lauren's Lavender Farm and, of course, amazing views at highest mountains of New Zealand's North Island - Mt Taranaki and Mt Ruapehu. It's great for people enjoying driving, hiking, sightseeing and other adventures. An absolute must-do activity for everyone travelling to New Zealand.
Close to the Forgotten World Highway you can find the largest alpaca farm in New Zealand - Nevalea Alpacas. You can meet these friendly animals here all year round and have a tour around the farm or feed alpacas.
