Baucus Doubles Down on Passing North Fork Bill Before Term Ends
April 25, 2013
(Washington, D.C.) -- Montana U.S. Senator Max Baucus began work right away this week to achieve one of his top legislative priorities before he completes his final term at the end of 2014.
Baucus testified before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee today regarding his bill to permanently protect the American side of the North Fork watershed from new oil and gas development and mining.
Baucus has spent nearly 40 years working to protect the North Fork -- beginning with his successful 1975 proposal to designate the Flathead as a Wild and Scenic River.
Baucus' North Fork Watershed Protection Act of 2013 does not impede timber production, hunting or fishing and continues to have the broad support of Montana businesses and conservation groups.
I was drawn to public service by the belief that each of us has a responsibility to leave this place in better shape than we found it. I believe many of you are here for that very same reason, Baucus told the Energy and Natural Resources Committee today.
In my 40 years in public office, I have found no place like the North Fork. When I leave the Senate, I want it to stay that way. This bill is our chance to leave one of the most special places on earth in better shape than we found it. I ask you to join me and all Montanans in that effort.
Baucus' North Fork bill is co-sponsored by Senator Jon Tester and endorsed by local chambers of commerce and individual businesses, along with multiple energy companies. Baucus and Tester have successfully worked with energy companies such as ConocoPhillips, Chevron, and Exxon subsidiary XTO Energy to voluntarily relinquish more than 200,000 acres of energy leases in the North Fork.
In March 2013, Congressman Steve Daines announced plans to support Baucus' legislation and introduce a companion bill in the U.S. House.

Baucus's 40-year legacy fighting to protect the North Fork:
• For nearly 40 years, Baucus has been a steady and strong voice to protect the North Fork of the Flathead River, beginning with his successful 1975 proposal to designate the Flathead as a Wild and Scenic River.
• To date, Baucus, with the help of Senator Jon Tester, has successfully negotiated the return of more than 200,000 acres held by energy companies near Montana's North Fork of the Flathead River.
• Together the Senators have secured the return of the primary interest in more than 80 percent of the total leased acreage. Baucus and Tester vowed to continue these efforts in addition to fighting for passage of the North Fork Watershed Protection Act introduced today.
After a 40 year career in public office, beginning in the Montana State House of Representative in 1973, Baucus announced Tuesday he is not seeking re-election in 2014. He will serve out his term focused on accomplishing several legislative priorities for Montana, including passing the North Fork legislation.

Title: The USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory - Research, monitoring, and the science of preparing society for low-probability, high-consequence events
* Volcanoes in the Cascade Range erupt twice per century on average, with eruptions often lasting for years.
* Although eruptions are generally not as high-consequence as large earthquakes, they are still high-consequence events.
* When a volcano wakes up there can be intense public interest - which requires crisis management, even if the eruption is small.

Presidents of South Korea, U.S. discuss new trade deal over Bibimbap dinner at White House
한미 정상, 정상회담 전 백악관 비빔밥 만찬과 함께 논의한 새 무역협정은?
We begin with the South Korean President's visit to Washington.
A dinner complete with one of Korea's most popular dish Bibimbap prepared at the White House, proved to be a good ice-breaker for the two leaders.
Reportedly they did more than just get better acquainted... even touching on trade issues.
Moon Connyoung starts us off with the prelude to the official bilateral summit. No drama, no buzz. Just a nice handshake and pleasantries.
The very first meeting between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump - perhaps to the disappointment of many who had hoped to see some sort of a drama play out before global audience - couldn't have been any smoother.
Before the closed-to-the-media dinner, the U.S. president anticipated an engaging discussion with his South Korean counterpart.
Discussing with our people, some of the complexities of North Korea, trade, and other things, and we will be discussing them all, as we progress, it could be very well late- evening, we very much respect you and we very much respect the people of South Korea.
Over a nicely prepared course meal and definitely carefully selected menu - the main dish of the evening being Korean traditional dish, Bibimbap made with South Carolina-produced long grains - the two leaders agreed to together establish peace on the Korean peninsula and achieve economic prosperity based on steadfast South Korea, U.S. alliance.
The two leaders held constructive discussions on various issues surrounding the Korean peninsula. The talks were frank, candid, and serious all the way through but I would like to ask for your understanding as I cannot disclose the details based on an agreement between the two countries.
The senior Blue House official added that President Moon told his U.S. counterpart that if President Trump resolves North Korea's nuclear problem, it would be a great success that no other U.S. president has ever been able to do before, and Mr. Trump would become a great president.
Meanwhile, minutes after saying good night to South Korea's first couple, President Trump tweeted that he had just wrapped up a good meeting with South Korean president and that the two discussed many things including North Korea and a *new trade deal.
When asked about this *new trade deal, Mr. Moon's press team avoided giving a clear answer alluding to a possible announcement by the two leaders after their official bilateral summit Friday morning.
As they say you grow fond eating together. Wine and dine. Those things, the two presidents did today and on the eve of the first bilateral summit between the two leaders, the mood here isn't bad at all.

Baucus Calls on Congress, President, to Work Together
February 26, 2013
***For Immediate Release***
BAUCUS CALLS ON CONGRESS, PRESIDENT, TO WORK TOGETHER
TO PROVIDE CERTAINTY ECONOMY NEEDS TO CREATE JOBS
Senator Calls Hearing to Bring Message from Montanans Front and Center in Ongoing Budget Debate
(Washington, D.C.) -- Montana's senior U.S. Senator Max Baucus called a hearing in the Senate Finance Committee today to bring the concerns he's heard from Montanans front and center in the ongoing budget debate. Baucus said the Montana families and small businesses he talks to are desperately calling for certainty. Baucus warned the panel that constant lurching from one fiscal showdown to the next is hurting the ability to grow our economy and create jobs.
Like many members of the committee, I just returned from a week at home in Montana talking with the people I work for. At each stop, from every corner of the state, I heard one thing over and over: the people we work for need certainty. It's time Washington started listening. They are tired of being jerked around from one crisis to the next. They make tough decisions every month to keep their budgets in the black. They deserve a Congress -- and a President -- that can work together and do the same, Baucus told the Senate Panel.
The dysfunction of our government is degrading confidence in our economy and creating uncertainty for families and businesses. It's preventing families from planning for the future. It's dragging down investment, leaving businesses sitting on the sidelines and holding back our economy.
Last week, Baucus traveled across Montana, beginning with a work day at Wheat Montana in Three Forks. From there, Baucus met with the local Chamber of Commerce in Billings, the Commander of Montana's Army National Guard, based in Great Falls, and law enforcement and community leaders in Missoula and Bozeman.
During today's hearing, Baucus highlighted concerns from each of the Montana groups over indiscriminate budget cuts, known as the sequester, set to take effect at the end of the week.
Baucus called on his colleagues and the President to work together to find a compromise that cuts the debt without putting Montana jobs in jeopardy. Beyond the sequester, Baucus called for compromise and cooperation to avoid further budget showdowns as additional deadlines take effect in the coming months -- including the expiration, on March 27th, of the current budget that funds the government.
