Tianzifang French Concession Shanghai China
Tianzifang has transformed itself from legacy residential architectures and factories into an artsy area housing bars, cafes, crafts shops, design studios, galleries and boutiques. It is ardently supported by crowds of yuppies, trend setters, designers and expatriates, who fall for temptation of old Shikumen houses (stone-framed-door houses) and lanes with infinite novelties.
The development of Tianzifang is fairly recent. It is also known as Taikang Road which was a back street in Dapuqiao district. One of the Shanghai highlights is the old residential buildings called ‘shikumen’, literally ‘stone doors’, which reflects a confluence of architectural tastes. As a prized treaty port, Shanghai had been familiar to venturers since the mid-19th Century. By the 1920-1930s, housing with stone doorframes and solid wooden doors are commonly known as Shikumen. People adopted simple engravings on the stone frames. Taikang Road area was built up by the French Concession expansion. Apart from Shikumen buildings, there are also French style remainders. The distinctive scenes and architectural composition in Taikang Road denotes the city’s eventful history. In the 1930s, white-collar workers, including doctors, artists, competent seafarers and bank officers preferred to settle down here. It is equivalent to prosperous uptown of nowadays. Many influential artists in early 20th Century treat this region as their home.
Tianzifang enclave has expanded from Lane 210 to Lane 248. It is called the SOHO in Shanghai, and a nest for 29 art and design studios, 58 crafts shops and galleries, 65 antique shops and some boutiques, etc. Many coffee shops, bars, tea houses, and silk shops here are operated by an international mix of owners. They are imbedded either in the modern lanes, castles of Spanish or British styles, or the Shikumen buildings. Restaurants here are small but offer various delicious foods from many countries, such as Thai food, New York steak and burger, grill, Japanese sushi, French goose liver, cheese hot pot…
Like Xintiandi, Tianzifang is one of a small number of old Shanghai shikumen buildings. The difference is the vivid live atmosphere stimulated from Tianzifang. The original buildings are still intact, true to the authentic features of the lanes in Shanghai, with Shikumen architecture to the fore. There are over 20 varieties of well-preserved shikumen buildings in Tianzifang, whose types and completeness rank with the best in the city. Many original residents still live in the narrow lanes. Please be mindful and respect their privacy. Both visitors and local residents deserve a respite in these acres.
Tianzifang is a vanguard of creative expressions. Every boutique shines with flashes of wit and creativity with one of a kind handmade novelty items. Tourists from overseas sit outside a café, while inhabitants hurry by. Most old walls are used as panels to exhibit latest elaborate doodles in bright colors. Tianzifang survives the surrounding city demolition by working in art. Its preservation is significant for the city’s cultural heritage.
ULTIMATE Shanghai STREET FOOD Breakfast Tour in French Concession | Shanghai, China
I love China. I first visited Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai back in 2015 with my father. I fell in love with the food, culture, and history then, so I jumped at the chance to go back in April of 2019. This time, I visited Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou for a deeper dive into this unique place. I can’t wait to share it all with you!

On the morning of my second full day in Shanghai, I met back up with my boy Li from UnTour Food Tours. He took me on a mouthwatering street food breakfast tour! Come along with us as we explore more of Shanghai!
We started by watching people do tai chi in a park in the center of the former French Concession.
From there, we stopped at an old-school diner-like eatery with communal seating. We got 4 dishes, including soymilk; a sticky rice ball with shredded pork, duck egg, and vegetables; an oily Chinese churro; and a sweet Chinese flatbread.
I dipped my churro into the soymilk at first. It tasted like the churros in Spain, except without sugar. Then I tore up the rest and let it soak up the milk. It was fantastic!
Next was the dense sticky rice ball, which contained lots of spice, egg, and pickled vegetables. It was really filling!
I finished up with a bite of the crispy, biscuit-like flatbread. It was delicious, but I held off on the rest.
I watched them prepare and fry the churros outside. There were also fried empanada-like dumplings!
Next, we visited a hole-in-the-wall restaurant for a thick, savory, seven-layered pancake with a sweet, red chili sauce. It looked like a dish I’d had in Greece. I loved the crispiness on the outside and softness on the inside. The sauce was really rich and had some spice that snuck up on me!
Our next spot at least 20 varieties of sweet and savory buns for 2 Yuan/roughly $0.30 each. There was a long line, so we’d come back later.
Then, we grabbed my favorite Chinese breakfast food, jianbing. It’s a type of crepe that contains egg, vegetables, a cracker, and sweet and spicy sauces. It was packed with flavor and had a great balance between sweet and spicy! I loved the cilantro!
Next was shepherd’s purse and pork wontons. It contained a delicious soup and was topped with spring onions. It was so juicy and delicious!
Then I had a pot sticker containing soup and sesame oil. You take a nibble and suck the soup out because it’s so hot. The soup inside was so good! I added some chilies and waited for it to cool off. I loved it, especially the crispy bottom!
We also had two steamed buns: one with black sesame and one with egg custard. The black sesame almost tasted like chocolate while the egg custard was super sweet. I liked the egg custard more.
We were getting full, so we took a break from eating. Outside, I watched them prepare the pot stickers and grabbed some coffee. I got a cold brew with coconut water, which was so different and tropical. I loved the natural sweetness!
Then, we saw some lane houses, which are have black gates, huge frames, and courtyards. There were lots of different architectural styles in the area. They were beautiful!
Next, we passed through a popular wet market, an open supermarket where they sell lots of veggies, meat, poultry, and seafood. Then it was time for some hand-pulled noodles, which are always a spectacle!
Our next spot was a 24/7, family-run restaurant. The noodles were covered in a sticky sauce. I added some chili sauce, which was pungent but not too spicy. So good! They were some of the best noodles I’ve ever had!
Next was a tofu bamboo stir-fry with green pepper red onions. It consists of soymilk skin, which has a texture similar to bamboo. I loved the peppers!
Our final dish was xiaolongbao, or soup dumplings, at Loushi Dumpling Shop. They contain ginger. You dip them into black rice vinegar, nibble a corner, and suck out the soup so it doesn’t burn your tongue. They were amazing, but I was so full!
I hope you enjoyed this epic Shanghai street food tour of the French Concession! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel!

Tianzifang French Concession Shanghai Shopping| China Vlog_03
Tianzifang French Concession Shanghai Shopping | China Vlog_03
This is Tianzifang, in the French Concession area of Shanghai for shopping. It consists of arty, hip alleyways and streets, shops, restaurants, bars, design studios, craft shops and street food. The word Tianzifang or Tian Zifang comes from the earliest recorded painter in China. A local, more recent artist named the area by adding 'fang' meaning mill, quarter or lane or workshop. The industrial architecture is still intact in the refurbished area you see today. Tianzifang is a amazing labyrinth and blend of old architecture, streets and alley ways mixing the old and new architecture and facilities.
Tianzifang written on it was hung over the entrance of Lane 210 in 2002.

CONCESSIONS IN SHANGHAI - HISTORY OF THE SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL SETTLEMENT
Shanghai, today the most populated Chinese city, was once a hub of international businesses. It held a British concession, an American concession and a French concession at first, and would later contain the famous Shanghai international settlement. The 1937 second Sino Japonese war would put an end to the concessions in Shanghai.

Shanghai, China.
The first day in Shanghai we visited the Shanghai Museum (Shanghai Bowuguan) where it's possible to find a nice collection of pottery, paintings, costumes, bronze, jade and furniture.
After that we walked by People's Square (Renmin Guang Chang) to reach the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. There are many floors dedicated to the history, transportation, subway, development, buldings, there's a VR 360 tour and a scale model of Shanghai.
Then we walked down Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road), a nice street with a lot of shopping and crowds.
Eventually we reached the nice area of Xintiandi full of restaurants where it was held the Shanghai Fashion Week 2017.

Shanghai French Concession Walking Tour
The Shanghai French Concession / Concession française de Changhaï / 上海法租界 was a foreign concession in Shanghai from 1849 until 1943, which progressively expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The concession came to an end in 1943 when the Vichy French government signed it over to the pro-Japanese puppet government in Nanking. For much of the 20th century, the area covered by the former French Concession remained the premier residential and retail district of Shanghai, and was also one of the centres of Catholicism in China. Despite re-development over the last few decades, the area retains a distinct character, and is a popular tourist destination.
The French Concession was established on 6 April 1849, when the French Consul to Shanghai, Charles de Montigny, obtained a proclamation from Lin Kouei (麟桂), the Circuit Intendant (Tao-tai/Daotai, effectively governor) of Shanghai, which conceded certain territory for a French settlement. The extent of the French Concession at the time of establishment extended south to the Old City's moat, north to the Yangjingbang canal (Yang-king-pang, now Yan'an Road), west to the Temple of Guan Yu (关帝庙) and the Zhujia Bridge (褚家桥), and east to the banks of the Huangpu River between the Guangdong-Chaozhou Union (Koang'tong-Tchao-tcheou kong-hoan) and the mouth of the Yangjingbang canal. The French Concession effectively occupied a narrow collar of land around the northern end of the Old City, south of the British settlement. At an area of 66 hectares (986 mu), the French Concession was about a third of the size of the British settlement at that time. A further small strip of riverside land to the east of the Old City was added in 1861, to allow the construction of the quai de France, to service shipping between China and France.
From 1914 until its abolition, the French Concession covered the north-eastern part of today's Xuhui District and the western part of Huangpu District (the former Luwan District), occupying the centre, south, and west of urban Shanghai. A small strip extended eastward along the rue du Consulat, now the East Jinling Road, to the Quai de France, now East-2 Zhongshan Road, which runs along the Huangpu River to the south of the Bund.
To the south-east of the French Concession was the walled Chinese city. To the north was the British concession, later part of the Shanghai International Settlement. The British and French quarters were separated by several canals: in the east, this was Yangjingbang, a creek flowing into the Huangpu River. These canals were later filled in and became Avenue Edward VII in the east and Avenue Foch in the west, both now part of Yan'an Road. To the south the French Concession was bounded by the Zhaojiabang canal (now filled in as Zhaojiabang Road and Xujiahui Road).

The ULTIMATE Chinese FOOD & CRAFT BEER Tour in French Concession | Shanghai, China
In April of 2019, I had the amazing fortune of getting hired by a fantastic company in China for a one-day job. I extended my trip to twelve days so I could properly explore Shanghai, a city I first visited in 2015 with my father. I also added days in the cities of Suzhou and Hangzhou so I could experience places that were completely new to me. I can’t wait to share this epic series with you!

My second full day in China continued with a mind-blowing Chinese food and craft beer tour in the French Concession, an area I had explored earlier that morning. I linked up with my boy Topher from UnTour Food Tours, who would be taking me around to his favorite spots in the area. I’d never had Chinese craft beer, so I was super excited!
UnTour Food Tours do amazing tours in Shanghai and Beijing, and also work with other companies in Chengdu and Hong Kong, so check them out if you’re ever in China!
We headed out to explore the middle part of Shanghai. This area contains lots of glitzy boutiques. Everything there looked brand new and luxurious and there were lots of skyscrapers.
We started at Liquid Laundry, a super nice and modern gastropub and nanobrewery that offers 15 beers. I started with a Cezanne farmhouse ale, which was smooth and silky with a hint of coconut. The head had a nice, creamy flavor!
Then we tried some from the barrels. They have a 3-barrel system and 8 fermenting tanks. We tried a Haze IPA, which was light, cloudy, and creamy with a nice head. The next one was tangy. Then we tried a flight of beers with an imperial stout, porter, cocoa porter, honey wine, an IPA, and a Cezanne.
The Cezanne was very light. The wheat pale ale had a hint of wheat, and the mango IPA had a nice mango flavor. The next one was like a sparkling water with a honey finish. The porter had notes of coconut and chocolate, and the imperial stout was perfect for the cold weather outside. There were notes of vanilla. It was my favorite one!
Then it was time to eat! We headed down a dark back alley, but Shanghai is a really safe city. We went for some dumplings. There were lots of different varieties to choose from, so I had Topher surprise me with our order.
We got some Suntory beer and boiled cabbage and pork dumplings. We made a dipping sauce out of rice vinegar, soy sauce, chili sauce, dried chili, and minced garlic. It was so good. The sauce was amazing! I loved the spice, but it sneaks up on you!
We headed back down the street with our beers—open containers are allowed in China. Next, we headed to The Camel, which was voted Shanghai’s best sports bar. Most of the beers here aren’t local craft beers; they’re imported. We only got 4 Chinese beers: a nice and hoppy American Wild Ale, a juicy hazy IPA, a malty pale ale, and a Maybach that tasted like a German beer. I loved the IPA!
Then we walked about 5 minutes to get some knife-cut beef noodles. They’re made with a dense, high-gluten dough. They only take 30 seconds to boil. We tried the most-consumed beer in the world, which was very watery. Then, we dug into the noodles!
The noodles were thick and had a great sauce. They were also al dente and super tasty. We added some spice to them. I loved the mix of the heat, sauce, cilantro, and noodles. I didn’t want them to end!
Our last stop was Daga Brew Pub, which focuses on Chinese craft beer. I liked it a lot. It was packed with people. We got five beers. I started with a jasmine tea lager, which was so different. I liked it! Then was a German wheat beer, a Sichuan IPA, a hoppy hazy IPA, and a brown ale.
What an amazing Chinese food and craft beer tour! If you enjoyed coming along with me on it, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food content!

Shanghai was an amazing experience even though I was only there for a few days. The people were surprisingly warm and welcoming and very helpful, especially compared to where I live in Korea. It was a pleasant surprise for my trip. The hotel I stayed at was Le Royal Meridian bear the Bund.
