Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, Tomigusuku
25th Nov 2017
During World War II, Japanese naval forces in Okinawa, led by Rear Admiral Minoru Ota, built an elaborate underground headquarters, with hundreds of meters of connecting tunnels under a hill in Tomagusuku. On June 4, 1945, the U.S. 6th Marines landed and a pitched battle ensued.
Ota sent his farewell telegram to the 32nd Army on June 11. In it, he commended the Okinawan people’s self-sacrifice and cooperation during the battle. Ota then, along with members of his staff, committed suicide on June 13 to avoid surrender. The Marines sealed the entrances to the underground headquarters rather than attempt to enter it. When it was unsealed in the 1950s, the remains of over 2000 sailors were found.
Today, the Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters can be visited by the public. Traces of the mass suicide by Ota and his men can still be seen. Blast scars from a hand grenade are visible on the walls and the farewell message left by Ota is still clearly visible.

Japanese Naval Underground Headquarters from World War 2 | Okinawa, Japan
In today's vlog, The Lovelys visit the Japanese Naval Underground Headquarters from World War II. The Japanese Naval Underground was 450 meters of tunnels that were built by the Japanese Navy Corps of Engineers. It was meant to outlast aerial bombardment and shelter 4,000 troops. Today, the underground headquarters stands as a testament to the horrors of war and fanaticism. It is hard to imagine that two stalwart allies like the U.S. and Japan fought and died there on opposite sides.

The Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, a 450 meter tunnel complex which was served as an underground headquarters during the Battle of Okinawa was established in 1944. It was finally opened to public in 1970, after it was left untouched for many years (ref. Okinawatravelinfo.com)

Japanese Naval Underground Headquarters, Okinawa March 27, 2017
On the day of my final foray into the adventures of Okinawa 2017 I sorta did an Oh, by the way... and decided to stop by the old Naval HQ. I hadn't been there in almost three decades. See, I had driven
down to Naha just to make danged certain that I'd be able to find the car rental agency. The last thing that I needed was to get lost, miss my flight in 2 days and end up having to jump through hoops (to say nothing about the added expense!) getting a flight rescheduled, find a room for the additional day(s), etc.

Japan Travel: Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, Commemorating the Battle. Itoman,Okinawa25 Moopon
Near the end of World WarII, Okinawa Island became the site of one of the war's bloodiest battles, when the US forces invaded and occupied the island. An estimated 200,000 people, including more than 100,000 civilians and 12,500 Americans were killed in the battle.
The devastating effects of the war had a deep impact on the local people. There are a number of monuments and museums relating to the period throughout Okinawa Island. The worst battle took place in the south, and that is where some of the larger monuments have been constructed.
Peace Memorial Museum, located in Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, gives a sobering overview of the lead up to the battle, the battle itself and the reconstruction of Okinawa.
Cornerstone of Peace
It’s a collection of large stone plates with the names of all fallen soldiers and civilians, including Koreans, Taiwanese, Americans and Britons.
Himeyuri Monument (Himeyuri no To)
. It commemorates the fate of female high school students, who worked in army field hospitals in caves under horrendous conditions. Most of them did not survive the war.
Former Navy Underground Headquarters
It consists of several hundred meters of underground corridors and rooms that served as the Japanese navy's headquarters during the war. A lot of sailors committed suicide in these tunnels, after their situation had grown hopeless towards the end of the battle.
