Journey In Japan - Return To Ise 「伊勢に帰る」
*:--☆--:*:--☆:*:--☆--:*:READ ME:--☆--:*:--☆:*:--☆--:*
This video is a condensed version of my return trip to Ise in 2013. I think it captures my trip as a whole very well.
For those of you who don't know, I went to Japan in 2011 and stayed in Ise for a one month homestay through the LABO organization.
This past summer, I returned to Ise for 5 1/2 weeks on my own to reunite with my family and friends.
The people you see in this video are the same people you've watched in my videos two years ago, with a few new additions.
I'm curious to see if you can recognize some of them. ^^
This video is my baby and I've been working on it for a while, trying to chose the clips that best captured my second homestay.
It's very near and dear to my heart, and I get very emotional when I watch it.
It was difficult enough leaving these people two years ago, and the second goodbye was twice as hard.
Many of my LABO friends will be off to university or to other parts of Japan when I return again, so this video is my way of freezing time.
Watching it takes me back to Ise, back to my friends, and back to my home.

Mie Prefecture, within the Kansai region on Japan’s main island of Honshu, has vast protected areas and some 1,000 kilometers of Pacific coastline. In its city of Ise is one of Japan’s holiest sites: the Ise Grand Shrine, a Shinto complex inside Ise-Shima National Park. The park encompasses the Shima Peninsula, including Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks), a pair of sacred sea rocks linked by ceremonial rope.

What is school like in Indonesia? - Visiting children at Primary School in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra
In Indonesia children have to go to school 6 days a week. They need to wear three different uniforms per week. Their shoes have to be black, closed-off and with laces, Velcro is not allowed.
First six years of primary school are followed by three years of ‘lower’ high school and another three years of ‘upper’ high school. Primary shool is a general education, and ‘lower’ high school is education focused on a specific skill or job. For the primary school there are no tuition fees, but schools are creative in finding ways to charge extra costs.
The children studying at ‘lower’ or upper’ high school need to go to villages outside of Bukit Lawang which accounts for extra transportation costs. Thus, the costs for the children’s education consists of books, transportation, uniforms and tuition fees.
Thanks fow watching!

Tragedy of Kitakami River by Giant Tsunami
The tragedy of Okawa elementary school by giant tsunami after Japan Earthquake.189 inhabitants of Kamaya district,74 of the 108 children and 10 of the 11 teachers died in the tsunami,March 11,2011.
After the big earthquake of 14:46, Okawa elementary school students in Ishinomaki-city, Miyagi-prefecture, led by homeroom teachers, and moved from their classrooms to a schoolyard immediately. Their parents had been already arriving at the schoolyard by cars of 5 to 6 at that time. Large tsunami warning of 6m height was broadcast at 14:52.
The vice-principal asked the residents, Is it safe to let children climb this mountain?, and adding Do you think this mountain will collapse?
The residents answered Tsunami will not come here, so far. Don't worry.
After taking the roll call of students, the school inside was dangerous for flying glasses, for the reason that the hill behind school was a bad place on steep slopes, and they supposed to go to triangle zone of Sinkitakami Bridge. Elementary school students led by homeroom teachers, went out from the schoolyard, as soon as, a terrible sound echoed out. The huge black tsunami and big waves spilled out from the bank of Kitakami River, struck the entire, and swallowed from a front of students. A teacher and students at the backward went up to the behind mountain immediately, and sevral numbers of people were saved. The tsunami overcoming the roofs of school building run up to 10m and destroyed all of houses around this area.
The tsunami swallowed to the school. Mr.Takahasi was looking at the accumulated wreckage on the school roof from behind mountain. Calling for help after a while, he found a woman and a child had grabbed a tree branch, and helped them. He heard the voices of children shouting while being swept toward inland help..., but the flow was too fast, and hiding in the wreckage, he could not find them out. Their voices went away gradually. It was snowing from evening on the day.
From the next day 12, trembling and crying, their parents began looking for their own children in the mud and debris, those who had thought that their children could evacuate safely. My child had been wrapped in a sheet of vinyl, in a naked state, the mud had been clogging in the ears, nose, mouth and eyes, and a tear rolled down from the eye of my dead child. A bus was waiting in front of the school at that time. Why couldn't you and children escape by school bus?
The next day, more than 30 dead bodies have been found within the school and at the foot of the mountain.

Volcanic Winter, Population Bottlenecks, and Human Evolution
2015 Hallam L. Movius, Jr. lecture and reception with Stanley H. Ambrose, Professor of Anthropology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The eruption of the Mount Toba supervolcano in the Indonesian island of Sumatra 74,000 years ago brought about an era of severe environmental degradation that decimated populations of Neanderthals and modern humans. Archaeological evidence suggests that modern humans survived this era by creating cooperative intergroup social networks and behaving like tribes. Neanderthals, on the other hand, behaved more like primate troops, living in small, closed territories with limited intergroup interaction. Stanley Ambrose will discuss the behaviors that contributed to the competitive advantage of modern humans and the demise of Neanderthals. Recorded March 12, 2015.
