Lafcadio Hearn's Old Residence in Matsue
Lafcadio Hearn is a writer well known for collecting Japanese folk ghost stories such as Miminashi-Houichi and Yuki-onna.
n 1890, Hearn went to Japan with a commission as a newspaper correspondent, which was quickly terminated. It was in Japan, however, that he found a home and his greatest inspiration. Through the goodwill of Basil Hall Chamberlain, Hearn gained a teaching position during the summer of 1890 at the Shimane Prefectural Common Middle School and Normal School in Matsue, a town in western Japan on the coast of the Sea of Japan.
During his fifteen-month stay in Matsue, Hearn married Koizumi Setsu, the daughter of a local samurai family, with whom he had four children.
He became a naturalized Japanese, assuming the name Koizumi Yakumo, in 1896 after accepting a teaching position in Tokyo.

Within the samurai town of Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture, visitors can visit the former residence of Lafcadio Hearn, one of the first western authors on Japanese culture. His former residence is now opened to the public.
Though Lafcadio Hearn was born in Greece, his Matsue home was traditionally Japanese. The exterior is the then typical strong Japanese gate while on the other side of the gate is a traditional Japanese garden. Visitors can explore through his home, examining the hanging scrolls in the tatami rooms.
Lafcadio arrived in Japan in 1890. During his time here, he married a Japanese lady and became a naturalized Japanese citizen, taking the name Koizumi Yakumo. Among his works are “Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan” and Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. For a deeper understanding of Lafcadio Hearn, there is a museum next to his residence, with collections on both his work and Lafcadio Hearn, the person.
Hours: 8:30 to 18:30 (until 17:00 from October to March)
Last entry is 20 minutes before the closing time.
Closed: Opened all Year Round
Admission: 300 yen each for the museum and residence (50% off for foreign tourists)

The author of this book is a 19th century Greek novelist by the name of Lafcadio Hearn (in 1896 he obtained Japanese citizenship and took the name ‘Yakumo Koizumi’). After coming to Japan he announced a collection of stories he had written under the title “Kwaidan”.

Japan's scariest ghost stories are brought to life by acclaimed actor Shiro Sano through his dynamic reading of Kwaidan, a collection of Japanese folktales from writer Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904). Also known as Yakumo Koizumi, Hearn was attracted to the beauty of Japan and Shintoism, which incorporates worship of nature, spirits and ancestors. Sano's reading, accompanied by powerful and exquisite live music by distinguished guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto, illustrates Hearn's open-minded view of Japan and the world. Preceding the live performance, folklorist Bon Koizumi, the great-grandson of Hearn and Director of the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum in the city of Matsue, will give a short lecture.
Performed in Japanese with English supertitles.

Summer House of Lafcadio Hearn (Shizuoka, c. 1870)
Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was born in Greece, educated in Ireland, and went to the United States where he studied literature. He came to Japan in 1890 and immediately resolved to settle down in this country for life. He taught English in Matsue and Kumamoto, and then moved to Kobe where he was naturalized in Japan in 1896. He moved to Tokyo in the same year to give lectures at the Imperial University of Tokyo. From the following year onward, he summered every year at the sea coast of Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, on the second floor of a fish shop owned by Otokichi Yamaguchi, whom Hearn thought the most amiable Japanese he had ever known. The shop was rebuilt in the Meiji-Mura in 1971.

Lafcadio Hearn - The Story Of Mimi-Nashi-Hôïchi
Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (June 27, 1850 – September 26, 1904), known also by the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo, was an international writer, known best for his books about Japan, especially his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories, such as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. In the United States, Hearn is also known for his writings about the city of New Orleans based on his ten-year stay in that city.
Hearn was born in Lefkada (the origin of his middle name), one of the Greek Ionian Islands. He was the son of Sergeant Major Charles Bush Hearn (of County Offaly, Ireland) and Rosa Antoniou Kassimati, a Greek woman of noble Kytheran lineage through her father, Anthony Kassimati. His father was stationed in Lefkada during the British occupation of the islands. Lafcadio was baptized Patricio Lefcadio Hearn in the Greek Orthodox Church. It is not known whether Hearn's parents were ever legally married, and the Irish Protestant relatives on his father's side considered him to have been born out of wedlock. This may, however, have been because they did not recognize the legitimacy of a Greek Orthodox marriage ceremony for a Protestant.
Hearn relocated to Dublin, Ireland, at the age of two years, where he was brought up in the suburb of Rathmines. Other members of his family also had artistic interest. His father's brother Richard was at one time a well-known member of the Barbizon set of artists, although he did not become well known as a painter, possibly due to a lack of personal ambition. Young Hearn had a rather casual education, but in 1865 was attending the Roman Catholic Ushaw College, Durham. He was injured in a playground accident during his teens, suffering loss of vision in his left eye.

Greece-born Lafcadio Hearn (1850 - 1904) spent decades of his life in Japan, even marrying a Japanese woman, thus becoming a Japanese citizen by the name of Koizumi Yakumo (小泉 八雲). He wrote many books on Japan, especially about its folklore. In this posthumously published book, he takes a closer look at Japan's religious history: How it developed from ancient beliefs into Shintoism, resisted suppression attempts by both Buddhism and Christianity and how – despite efforts to westernise Japan during the era known as Meiji Restoration – it remained the basis for Japanese society.
