The Flowers of the Forest
A lament for the army of James IV, the flower of Scottish manhood, slain with their king on the field of Flodden, September 1513. The composition of this song began with a fragment of a very old ballad. Mrs Patrick Cockburn of Ormiston drew on this fragment to write a full song. Then in the mid 18th century Miss Jane Elliot, daughter of Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, Lord Chief Justice Clerk of Scotland, drew on Mrs Cockburn's work to make this lyric a much finer piece of work.
'The pipe tune is well known to anyone who has attended a Remembrance Day service in Scotland, but the song is all too seldom heard nowadays.'
The Scots had in 1513 invaded England to support their allies, the French.
On 9 September 1513 the Scots army, under King James IV, faced the English forces of King Henry VIII under the command of Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey. The battle was ferocious and bloody - men were felled by artillery, arrows, pikes, bills and swords. Around 14,000 men died, including James IV, the last British king to die in battle.

Roseisle Forest and beach Oct 2017 Mavic Pro 4K
Along the Moray coast, in the forest of Roseisle, lie the remains of coastal defences from World War Two.
In the summer of 1940, the threat of German invasion was very real. The British defence plan outlined a need to protect areas of the coast where the enemy could land.
One such area was Moray. This led to the construction of a series of defence structures that ran between Cullen Bay and Burghead Bay, through today's Roseisle and Lossie Forests.
Along the beach at Burghead Bay, where Roseisle Forest now stands, a line of concrete anti-tank blocks and pillboxes were constructed.
Due to coastal erosion and the movement of the sand, some of these defences have been lost or moved, a few pillboxes have tipped over due to the movement of the sand.
Great day out for the Family.

Women's Royal Air Force veterans pay visit to the Rock and reflect on their time served in Gibraltar
Veterans from the Women's Royal Air Force, who spent time on the Rock during their years serving, have paid visit to Gibraltar, to speak with current personnel.
The women's section merged with the RAF in 1994; since then, all personnel fall under the same section. However, the women's branch was formed in 2013 as a group for female RAF veterans.
The visit, which has coincided with the Queen's Birthday Parade, has allowed the women to reflect on their time in Gibraltar as well as appreciate the facelift the Rock has seen since they were last here.
Shelina Assomull spoke to some of the veterans about what it was like to serve in the Women's Royal Air Force in Gibraltar.
