The City Center of Willemstad Curacao
In this video we walk around in the city center of Willemstad Curacao.
Willemstad is the capital of the autonomous Dutch area of Curacao in the Caribbean. Until October 10, 2010, Willemstad was the capital of the Autonomous Province of the Netherlands Antilles, which ceased to exist on that date.
Willemstad is located on the southwestern part of the main island of Curaçao and has about 125,000 inhabitants.
The city consists of two parts Punda and Otrabanda on each side of St Annabayten which forms the city's natural port of Schottegat. Outside lies the small island of Sint Annabaai. The neighborhoods are connected with the pontoon bridge Queen Emmabrug, but also since 1974 by Queen Julianabrug.
The older district is Punda with historic buildings around the main street Handelskade, such as the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue built in 1732, the Post Office from 1693 which today is a museum, a church built in 1769 and Fort Amsterdam built in 1635.
The slightly younger district is Otrabanda, which has been connected to the pontoon bridge since 1886 and also has a number of historic buildings around the main street Breedestraat. Together, the two parts form the center of Willemstad.
Since the 1960s, tourism has been the main source of income for Willemstad and the airport is called Curaçao International Airport (airport code CUR) located about 12 km from the city center.

An overview of our shore excursion in Curacao. We visited an ostrich farm, had a bus tour of the island, went to the Chichi Factory, and still had time to do a little shopping before the boat left. The excursion was booked through Carnival Cruise at a price of $58.99 for each adult and $55.99 for each child.

Curacao Sightseeing Willemstad ????????
The vibrant capital of Curacao ???????? is a welcoming and exuberant destination with two separate historic districts separated by the beautiful St. Annabaai. Punda is characterized by tight, narrow streets full of shops and museums. Otrobanda, or the other side, is a maze of winding residential streets that contrast with the organized street pattern on the other side of the bay. The colorful colonial architecture has made Willemstad a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Abandoned WW1 / WW2 Fort Waakzaamheid - Urban Exploration - URBEX - Curaçao 2016
Fort Waakzaamheid lies in the western Otrabanda neighborhood in the city of Willemstad on the Caribbean island of Curaçao in the Dutch Antilles. The name Waakzaamheid translates to Alertness.
Fort Waakzaamheid is a small fort and was probably built between February and May of 1803 to defend the island against a possible French invasion. It was built at a cross section of roads leading into Willemstad. Its back was guarded by another small fort which has now disappeared; Fort Wreker.
In January 1804 both forts were taken by the English troops under Captain William Bligh (of Bounty-fame). The forts artillery, 4 cannons, were pointed at the center of Willemstad and bombarded the buildings and forts there. One of the cannon balls which hit the western facade of the Fortkerk in Fort Amsterdam can still be seen embedded in the wall there. This siege on Willemstad lasted for 26 days. Later on the English retreated from the island and Fort Waakzaamheid came into Dutch hands again.
In 1807 the island surrendered to the English. In 1816 the island was returned to the Dutch but the fort never regained its military occupation.
During WW II the Americans placed anti aircraft guns on the walls of Fort Waakzaamheid, built barracks and used it as an observation post.
When I visited the remains of the fort were built over to house a restaurant. At present the restaurant has closed.
This building is not very distinguishable as a fort. It looks as if only the lower rubble stone walls are original.
