Fort Barrancas: Forts of Pensacola Bay | In Your Own Backyard | WSRE
Constructed between 1839 and 1844, historic Fort Barrancas was one of four forts built to protect the Pensacola Navy Yard. Located on board present-day Naval Air Station Pensacola, the artfully designed and beautifully preserved six-million brick fortification expanded on an earlier Spanish-built structure, Fort San Carlos.

The National Naval Aviation Museum is one of the best aviation museums in the world. Even if you don;t care about history simply wandering among the planes stacked up as if in a giants toy cabinet is amazing.
Fort Barrancas is... yet another brick fort... but if you're on the Naval Air Station anyway its a decent way to spend and hour or so.

The Birth of Naval Air Station Pensacola
In January 1914, one hundred years ago, the naval aviation personnel arrived in Pensacola, Florida, to establish the Navy's first naval aeronautical station. Today, NAS Pensacola is known as the Cradle of Naval Aviation.
Pensacola Forts
Visited Fort Pickens and Fort Barrancas in Pensacola, Florida. Of the two, Fort Pickens was more historically interesting. In addition to Civil War defenses, it also has a number of guns and fortifications from the Spanish American War and World War I eras. The beaches here have a light colored almost white sand.
Fort Barrancas
Fort Barrancas, built on the site of numerous previous forts, is a United States military fort and National Historic Landmark located physically within Naval Air Station Pensacola.

Naval Aviation Museum Flightline Tour, Pensacola, Florida
- Took a great tour at the Naval Aviation Museum of the flightline. Lots of historic aircraft, and even two P-3's! I used to fly on EP-3E's in the Navy! Cool! One of the two P-3s is an old NASA plane they used to call the vomit comet - used to train astronauts in zero-gravity by flying to altitude then diving quickly. Lots of WWII era aircraft too, including Mitchell bombers like the kind used to bomb Tokyo four months after Pearl Harbor - the Japanese military had promised the Emperor Japan would never be bombed in the war, this was a huge morale boost to the US military.

Forts of Pensacola Bay: Advanced Redoubt | In Your Own Backyard | WSRE
The third episode of In Your Own Backyard’s “Forts of Pensacola Bay” series focuses on the Advanced Redoubt, a unique 19th century structure located at present-day Naval Air Station Pensacola. Construction began on the Advanced Redoubt in 1845, and it saw action during the Civil War. The Advanced Redoubt was designed to help protect Fort Barrancas from land-based attacks. Gulf Islands National Seashore park ranger Jeff Massey takes viewers on a guided tour, rich in historical detail, of this important but not-often visited part of the defensive system of the former Pensacola Navy Yard. Unlike Forts McRee, Pickens and Barrancas, which protected the entrance to Pensacola’s harbor, the Redoubt was designed solely to defend against an attack by ground troops. “In Your Own Backyard” is hosted by Sherri Hemminghaus Weeks.
