FORT BEEKENBURG CURACAO
This video is about Fort Beekenburg that was built in between 1701 and 1704. The Caracas Bay with the backdrop Spanish Water was one of the few suitable places to go ashore from the sea. It was therefore decided to build a fort to make it impossible for enemies to reach Willemstad the city.
The fort was named after the Lord van Beek between 1701 and 1704 who coordinated the protection of the city.
During the 18th century the fortress was able to stop several attacks by French and British troops.
At one point, the British tried to bypass the fort by scaling the adjacent mountain. However, this was so problematic and it took too much time that the plan was stopped and it was decided to withdraw before the Dutch had gathered their troops. From 1800 to 1803 and from 1807 to 1816 Curaçao occupied by the British. Several times Fort Beekenburg was attacked by pirates, without success.

Exploring Fort Beekenburg Willemstad Curaçao!
Fort Beekenburg. Curaçao. Full View. Caracasbaai.
The Fort Beekenburg (in Dutch: Fort Beekenburg) (Also known as The Castle or Het Kasteel) is a fortress on Curaçao in the middle of the Bay of Caracas (Caracasbaai) in the Lesser Antilles.
Fort Beekenburg was built in 1703 in order to provide a better defense of the area against Spanish attacks.
It was one of the few suitable places to access from the sea to the land. Therefore, it was decided to build a fortress to make Willemstad inaccessible to enemies.
The fort receives name of Sir Brook between 1701 and 1704 that coordinated the defense of the city. During the 18th century, the fortress suffered several attacks from French and British troops. At one point, the British tried to bypass the fort using the adjacent mountain. However, this caused so many problems and took so long that the plan was suspended and the withdrawal was decided before the Dutch had gathered their troops. From 1800 to 1803 and from 1807 to 1816 Curacao was under brief occupation by the British. Several times Fort Beekenburg was attacked by pirates, without success.

Willemstad is the capital city of Curaçao, an island in the southern Caribbean Sea that forms a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Formerly the capital of the Netherlands Antilles prior to its dissolution in 2010, it has an estimated population of 150,000. Willemstad is home to the Curaçao synagogue, the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas. The historic centre of the city consists of four quarters: the Punda and Otrobanda, which are separated by the Sint Anna Bay, an inlet that leads into the large natural harbour called the Schottegat, as well as the Scharloo and Pietermaai Smal quarters, which are across from each other on the smaller Waaigat harbour. The city centre, with its unique architecture and harbour entry, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
