30 BC Wineries visits Fort Berens Estate Winery
Fort Berens Estate Winery is one of BC's most northerly wineries as it's located in Lillooet, BC. With it's grand opening in September 2014 Fort Berens is pioneering this new wine region and the first vintages are proving to be delicious so I expect to see more wineries in the future.

BC Winegrowers - Fort Berens - Lillooet
Rolf de Bruin and Heleen Pannekoek like to say they came to Lillooet because it was affordable. In fact, they scoured the world for a place to build their winery before deciding on British Columbia and ultimately Lillooet. The dynamic duo threw a lot of science at the site as well as personal energy, and carved out 8.5 hectares of vineyard on a sagebrush-covered bench, at the foot of the impressive Coastal Ranges. There is no Fraser Canyon Designated Viticultural Area (DVA) yet and that goes ditto for a Lillooet sub appellation but like the gold rush before them the race is on.
Intro to Fort Berens Estate Winery
One hundred and fifty years ago the Hudson's Bay Company began construction of Fort Berens on a sage-brush covered bench on the east side of the Fraser River, at Lillooet, British Columbia. This trading fort was to serve the thousands of prospectors who flocked to the Lillooet region in search of gold. The fort was never completed and the fertile river bench was used instead for the growing of melons, tomatoes and alfalfa.
Located in the magnificent Fraser Canyon, that historic site is now home to Fort Berens Estate Winery, Lillooet's first winery and vineyard.
In keeping with the pioneering spirit of the Gold Rush era, we are creating a new and unique wine experience in British Columbia, offering superb, distinct, hand-crafted wines.

Chefs in the City - Fort Berens Winery
Rolf de Bruin and Heleen Pannekoek decided to pursue their lifelong dreams of opening a winery when they moved from the Netherlands to British Columbia in 2005. A few years later, in 2009, Fort Berens Estate Winery was established in Lillooet. For Heleen, the best part of being in the wine industry is meeting people who love food and wine as much as she does! Chefs in the City is a great opportunity to sample food and drink from different restaurants and wineries in the Kamloops region while supporting a good cause.
Ft Berens Winery
Ft. Berens Winery in Lillooet may be the most northerly winery in Canada. Hot summers, dry climate and good soil provide the conditions for high quality grapes to be grown. The winery is already winning medals in competitions.
