Col de Tende - Panice Soprana to Fort Central
This is an uncut version of our drive from Panice Soprana to Fort Central along the Col de Tende!
We had intended to drive up the Col de Tende on the French side but found the road to be inaccessible to anything other than off-road vehicles.
With a maximum of elevation of 6135 ft the Col de Tende crosses the border between France and Italy and connects the Maritime Alps with the Ligurian Alps.
The route was reportedly first used by the Phoenicians sometime around 1000BC and later maintained by the Greeks and the Romans.
A Tunnel that is almost 2 miles long and simply known as the Tunnel del Tenda was opened in 1882 which bypassed the mountainous section of the Col de Tende,

We went on a 2000 mile road trip to The French Riviera (Monaco and the surrounding area) to drive some of the world’s best driving roads to find out! This is The Retro Lab’s Monte Carlo Rallye!

TENDE TOWN TO COL DE TENDE
The Tende fort
Driving the bad road at the Tende WW I fortification twentysecond of june, 2013. Part of the road was better than last year, other parts much worse. But it´s worth the drive. The view is splendid and the fortifications are very impressive.

Exploring Fort Central, France / Italy
In this video we explore Fort Central, which is located on the border between France and Italy!
The Col de Tende separates the Maritime Alps from the Ligurian Alps. It connects Nice and Tende in Alpes-Maritimes with Cuneo in Piedmont, Italy.
A railway tunnel inaugurated in 1898 and a Road Tunnel inaugurated in 1882 run under the pass. The latter tunnel is 2 miles long and is among the oldest long road tunnels.
French historian François Guizot states that the road was first developed by Phoenicians and later maintained by Greeks and Romans.
