Wandering down Love Lane, ocean views & visiting Fort Cornwallis in George Town, Penang, Malaysia
In our latest travel video we first wander down the seedy street known as Love Lane, take in some stunning ocean views and finally visit Fort Cornwallis in the historic UNESCO heritage city George Town, Penang, Malaysia. Initially we learn more about the history of Love Lane which used to be a street infamously associated with prostitution and mistresses while Samuel randomly showcases his horrendous dance moves. Upon arriving nearby the ocean we're greeted by a friendly cat and playful kitten. We notice many fishermen, small boats, tankers and even a huge cruise ship. It was quite the contrast between big and small, humble and enormous. We notice a group of runners and at first think it's just a running club; however, upon further inspection we realize that a marathon is happening. Finally, we visit the historic Fort Cornwallis named after the city founder. On the way back home we notice lots of rickshaw and trishaws along with spotting a game of pick-up basketball.

Today we are going to be taking a tour of George Town's oceanfront but first we've got to walk down the infamous Love Lane.
Love Lane got its name because centuries ago this is where Chinese businessmen used to keep their mistresses.
Here is a small area where you can actually walk along the ocean side. We've seen everything going on along here. There is a large cruise ship in the back, there are people fishing and there is small tiny little boat. You've got everything from big and luxurious to very small and humble. It is all out here.
Look who has found a new friend here. Hello, kitty. Hello, cat. You are nice aren't you?
As we've been walking around this morning we've noticed a lot of different joggers. At first we thought maybe it was just a running club but actually it appears to be a big marathon going on here and there is a finish line not too far.
Fort Cornwallis was built after the cities founder Francis Light in 1786.
Those looking to visit Fort Cornwallis, it is open daily from 9 AM until 7 PM.

Fort Cornwallis - City Video Guide
When you’re ready for some military history with a touch of local lore, head for Fort Cornwallis.
Located on the edge of Penang, Malaysia, Fort Cornwallis grew from a stockade of palm trunks and wood into the commanding, star-shaped brick structure you see today. A Fort Cornwallis tour reveals its origins: the fort was constructed in the late 1700s to defend the city against the French and pirates. In fact, as you embark on your Fort Cornwallis sightseeing, you’ll see a number of cannons lining its walls—many of these were taken from pirates of the era.
The threat the fort posed must have worked, because Fort Cornwallis never saw any action—it existed as an administrative center and a minor miracle worker. The epicenter of these miracles is the Seri Rambai Cannon; according to local legend, if a childless woman places flowers in its barrel and says a prayer, she will become fertile.

Two more centuries-old cannons found around Penang’s Fort Cornwallis
Two cannons have been unearthed during restoration and upgrading works to reconstruct a seawall around the Esplanade in George Town, Penang.
The cannons, believed to date back to the late 1790s and early 1800s, are the fifth and sixth cannons to be found in the vicinity.

George Town, the Capital of Penang
Georgetown is the capital of the island and state of Penang, on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia. Named after Britain's King George III, George Town is located on the north-east corner of Penang Island. The Georgetown metropolitan has a population of 1,250,000 the second largest metropolitan in Malaysia by population.
George Town was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light, a trader for the British East India Company, as base for the company in the Malay States. He obtained the island of Penang from the Sultan of Kedah and built Fort Cornwallis on the north-eastern corner of the island. The fort became the nexus of a growing trading post and the island's population reached 12,000 by 1804. The town was built on swampy land that had to be cleared of vegetation, levelled and filled.
Today, the town is known for its well-preserved colonial core, with original shophouses dating from the 19th century to the 1930s still surviving, together with their trades of old. Street markets and hawkers continue to be a part of daily life, and the atmosphere is often likened to that of Singapore back in the 1960s and 1970s.
George Town was voted as one of the best cities in Asia by Asiaweek, ranked 6th in 1998 and 9th in 2000. More recently, George Town has improved a notch to rank as the 9th most liveable city in Asia. The town truly springs to life in the evenings, when most of the locals would head to the nearby street hawkers to have their meals and sometimes, a couple of drinks.
In 2008, George Town was, together with Malacca, formally inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is officially recognized as having a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.
