Fort George Historical Site Trinidad | #OnDeRoadTripz | WhaTooCook.com
My family and I took a trip to Fort George Historical Site, St. James, Trinidad, a few days ago and enjoyed the event tremendously. In, this #OnDeRoadTripz episode, you will see what the place looks like! Enjoy!
Formerly called La Vigie, Fort George is situated on the hills to the North of St. James overlooking the Gulf of Paria. The fort, which was part of a complex of fortifications, is the best destination for one of the most spectacular views of Port of Spain and the sea.

Fort George, Port of Spain, Trinidad
This is Fort George, Trinidad, overlooking the city of Port of Spain. Built in the 1800's originally to defend the city of Port of Spain, it never fired any of its 12 cannons.

Lost in Trinidad & Tobago | Fort George, Port of Spain 4K
A short time-lapse of the Trinidad coast from Fort George, Port of Spain.
It was a slightly overcast and hazy afternoon, offering a gorgeous sunset and it subsequently rained on the coast below.

Fort George Historical Site Trinidad and Tobago : Breath Taking View
Formerly called La Vigie, Fort George is situated on the hills to the North of St. James overlooking the Gulf of Paria. The fort, which was part of a complex of fortifications, is the best destination for one of the most spectacular views of Port of Spain and the sea. In addition to the beautiful vista at this well preserved structure one can see the original cannons, dungeons, artefacts of the day and a signal station which was established in 1802 and designed by Prince Kofi Nti, son of King Kofi Calclai of Ashanti, West Africa. Built in 1804 under the direction of the then British Governor, Brigadier-General Sir Thomas Hislop, the fortifications at Fort George consisted of sea defences and a series of supporting batteries: V. I. Z the York; Princess Charlotte; Abercombry and Cambridge on the lower slopes and Cumberland to the North above the Fort. Considered well-nigh impregnable in the day, it was the major defensive position in the Trinidad, but it was never to experience military action. In times of rumours of war the merchants of Port of Spain would store their records, cash and valuables here. Fort George ceased to be a Military establishment in 1846.

Fort George, Trinidad & Tobago
Formerly called La Vigie, Fort George was part of a complex of fortifications, the building of which began in 1804 under the direction of the then British Governor, Brigadier-General Sir Thomas Hislop. The fortifications consisted of sea defenses and a series of supporting batteries: the York, Princess Charlotte, Abercromby and Cambridge on the lower slopes and the Cumberland to the North above the Fort. Considered impregnable, it was the major defensive position in the island, but never to experience military action.
In times of rumours of war, the merchants of Port of Spain would store their records and valuables at the fort. Fort George ceased to be a military establishment in 1846. A signal station was established there and continued operation until November 1964.
This signal station, built about 1883, was designed by Prince Kofi Nti, son of King Kofi Calcali of Ashantee, West Africa. He arrived in Trinidad on 1st July 1881, having become a ward of the British Government after a war against the Ashantees in 1872. A major restoration of the building took place in 1965, three years after Trinidad gained its independence.

Port of Spain, Trinidad - view from Fort George
Port of Spain is the Capital of Trinidad and Tobago. The weather was fantastic, the city is clean, the people are nice and the food was excellent - what else do you need for vacationing.

Fort King George is representative of the British presence in the Caribbean. In the 1700s, Lord George Macartney, British Governor General of Grenada and Tobago, authorized the erection on Scarborough Hill of two barracks and double kitchen to house two companies of soldiers, together with capping the hill for a parade ground. By 1779 work was near completion.
In June 1781 Tobago fell to the French. By 1784 the French under General Blanchelande began construction of a fort on the hill. The Fort was named Fort Castries in 1787. In 1789 it was renamed Fort Republique and Fort Liberte in 1790 when the garrison revolted. The British recaptured the fort in 1793 from the French and it was re-named “Fort Scarborough”. Tobago was returned to France in 1801 but by 1803 was again a British Colony. The fort was then referred to as Fort King George after King George III, in 1804.
The Fort was built for the purpose of security control of the colonial territory from foreign invasions as well as local internal revolts from the enslaved. The upgrade of the Fort, from timber to brick, began in 1818, and underwent many changes and additions since. The last withdrawal of the Garrison was in January 1854 as the British government withdrew from Tobago. Fort King George consists now of many ruins, abandoned fortifications, cannons, and several structures which have survived, and it also houses the Tobago Museum.
