Peter Orr Memory Video
The Orr family recently established a memorial scholarship fund in memory of Peter Orr, who passed away March 2018. Thanks to generous donations from family and friends, we will be awarding the 2nd scholarship in the amount of $500 this year to a Killingly FFA senior.
Applicants must be Killingly FFA members in good standing. He/she must be enrolled this fall at a two or four-year college majoring in agriculture.
Peter Orr, Thompson, CT, co-owner of Fort Hill Farms, was a founding member of the Farmer’s Cow and a member of Agri-Mark dairy cooperatives. He grew up in Hadlyme, CT., and graduated from Xavier High School. He majored in agronomy at the University of Connecticut and earned a master’s degree at Penn State.
He was employed as a research scientist by Pfizer until 1992 when he and his wife, Kristin founded Fort Hill Farms, one of six Eastern Connecticut dairy farms in the Farmer’s Cow cooperative. He and Kristin raised two daughters, Kies and Lily Orr. He was the chairman of the Sustainability Committee at Agri-Mark Dairy Milk Cooperative.
Peter worked tirelessly on behalf of CT farmers. He left his mark on policies and legislation in Hartford. He sat on the Governor’s Dairy Council, was a member of the Milk Promotion Board and Milk Regulation Board, helping design the formula for dairy payments.
Since Peter had a great interest in agriculture, especially in both plant and dairy sciences, we felt a scholarship given each year would be a great way to honor his memory and support our outstanding FFA youth.
We hope that you will find this application thought provoking and enjoyable to complete. Please email completed applications to: kies.orr@hotmail.com by May 3rd, 2019. Please contact the email provided for an application or see the Killingly Ag Dept.

Old Connecticut Path: Hidden Byways from Hopkins Hill to Child Tavern -- Woodstock, CT
The Old Connecticut Path is one of the earliest trails followed as part of America's westward migration. Part 1 travels from Hopkins Hill in Woodstock, CT to the site of the Child Tavern on Barlow Cemetery Road in Woodstock. The route follows ancient paths and roads that have been largely forgotten with the passage of centuries. Using old maps and bushwacking, the route of the Old Connecticut Path is revealed once again.
As early as 1633-36, the migration from Massachusetts Bay at Boston/Cambridge west to Connecticut began following the Old Connecticut Path. John Oldham followed the Path to the Connecticut valley in 1633 followed by the Watertown, MA congregation in 1635 to settle Wethersfield, CT. Reverend John Wareham and the Dorchester congregation followed the Path in 1635 to settle Windsor, CT. Reverend Thomas Hooker and his entire congregation walked along the Old Connecticut Path for two weeks across the wilderness in 1636 from Cambridge, MA to establish Hartford, CT. Join me for a walk and use your imagination to experience the landscape traveled by the pioneers of the 1600s.

Old Connecticut Path: Walk on America's Oldest Highway - Woodstock, CT
The Old Connecticut Path is one of the earliest pioneer trails that was part of America's westward migration. A section of the Old Connecticut Path that forms America's oldest highway is preserved in Woodstock, Connecticut. This video visits the old highway as it crosses Mill Brook on the way to Fort Hill. The historical significance of this section of the Old Connecticut Path is recognized in the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the importance of the path as a route for westward migration, the area was an important native Wabaquasset tribal village and one of the earliest places settled in 1686 by the founders of Woodstock. As early as 1635-36, the migration from Massachusetts Bay at Boston/Cambridge west to Connecticut began following the Old Connecticut Path. Reverend Thomas Hooker and his entire congregation walked along the Old Connecticut Path for two weeks across the wilderness in 1636 from Cambridge, MA to establish Hartford, CT. 2018 Tourtellotte Memorial High School Graduation Retrospective
TMHS Class of 2018 are ‘change agents’
Graduating seniors make community ‘Thompson proud’
NORTH GROSVENORDALE, C.T., June 19, 2018 – Tourtellotte Memorial High School’s Class of 2018 has already been making the community “Thompson proud,” officials say.
On Monday, June 18, the 57 graduates were lauded for their academic success, athletic performance and artistic and musical talents, but were also applauded for their dedication to serving others through volunteering and fostering positive changes.
Speaking to the graduates at the commencement, held in the TMHS auditorium, Superintendent Melinda Smith said, “You went above and beyond to bring community awareness to the plight of the homeless, and raised funds to feed the poor while volunteering a great deal of your time at numerous school and community events.”
She told the students in her first year serving as superintendent, the Class of 2018 taught her what being a “Tourtellotte Tiger” was all about, and encouraged the seniors to continue their dedication to the service of others.
Principal Megan Baker called the graduates “change agents,” and said the students made the community “Thompson proud.”
“Have dreams, and never be afraid to reach for them. Surround yourself with good people, and leave it better than it was,” she told the Class of 2018.
In her commencement address, Sidney Ratliff, salutatorian, thanked her friends, family members and TMHS faculty for making her high school experience one she was sad to move on from. She told her classmates to choose kindness, regardless of where their path takes them in the future.
“In the end, nothing else matters,” she said.
Ratliff said, “I have learned more about who I want to be because of my classmates. I have learned that integrity and trustworthiness are the best qualities a person can possess.”
Class President, Julia Annese, told fellow graduates to follow Baker’s advice: “Stop, breathe, look around you, and be in the moment.”
“I encourage you to have fun, and live each day to the fullest. Only then you will create the kind of happy memories we have created here together,” Annese said.
Before diplomas were handed out to the Class of 2018, Jordon Sroczenski, valedictorian, shared her remarks that garnered a standing ovation.
Sroczenski told her fellow classmates, “You are capable of action. You are capable of exuding peace and justice in a world of the exact opposite.”
She said, “Some people are both crazy enough to dream and driven enough to actually chase after it - those are the people who change the world. Those are the people who fight injustice and complacency … those are the people sitting behind me now. The world better be ready for the Class of 2018, because we’re coming for it. And when we’re done, the world will never be the same again.”
Abandoned Danbury Quarter Civil War Cemetery Winchester Connecticut
A short video pan of the isolated and abandoned cemetery of the Danbury Quarter Settlement in Winchester Connecticut. Final resting place for a handful of Civil War soldiers and other locals (circa ~1800). I see that a one Mr. James Tuttle is buried here - the Tuttles operated a failed Iron Mine nearby. This site is rumored to be haunted (of course). Note: You'll need a 4X4 to access this location via the Old Waterbury Turnpike (the turnpike was last officially maintained in 1862):

Old Connecticut Path: Ways to Woodstock -- Thompson & Woodstock, Connecticut
The History of Windham County by Ellen Larned included a map to buried treasure. Larned's map of Ancient Windham County provides the key to open the door for modern explorers seeking to rediscover the pioneer's world along the Old Connecticut Path. Come along on the journey of rediscovery along the Old Connecticut Path from the fording place on banks of the Quinebaug River across the 3 mile wilderness of the Thompson Woods to reach the Senexet Meadows of Woodstock.
Ellen Larned's route from Thompson to Woodstock reflects time before King Philip's War (1675-76) when the land was still home of the Native People and the English traveled on foot through the native lands. Two later routes followed by the settlers of Connecticut after King Philip's war are traced to the point where they converge with the Old Connecticut Path at Senexet Meadow in Woodstock. These New ways, better suited to wheeled travel, replaced the Old Connecticut Path as the way from Massachusetts Bay to Connecticut.
Over the passage of centuries, memory of the Old Connecticut Path faded. The New ways were improved and some of these were also cast aside. Using Larned's map as a guide, a world undisturbed can be found in the Thompson Woods where the magic of nature and imagination can carry you back to the land as it may have been experienced by the pioneers. It truly is a buried treasure!
The Old Connecticut Path is one of the earliest trails followed as part of America's westward migration. As early as 1635-36, the migration from Massachusetts Bay at Boston/Cambridge west to Connecticut began following the Old Connecticut Path. Reverend John Wareham lead his congregation from Dorchester, MA to establish Windsor, CT in 1635. John Oldham traveled the Path that others followed from Watertown, MA to establish Wethersfield, CT.
