Fort James Beach Antigua DIY Excursion (4K)
It was easy to get a taxi at the St Johns Antigua cruise port to the nearby Fort James Beach. We did it during our December 2017 Caribbean cruise aboard the MSC Divina. It was $25 roundtrip- the driver dropped us off and then came back about 2 hours later to pick us up. The drive was about 15 minutes from the cruise terminal to the beach.
Fort James beach was quite nice. The beach was clean and it was certainly not overcrowded. You can even do horseback riding on the beach. This is certainly a do it yourself excursion that we recommend if you are visiting Antigua for the day on a cruise ship. We would rank it right up there with Dickenson Bay Beach, though Valley Church Beach was quite spectacular when we were there years ago.

St John's Antigua Cruise Port Tour (4K)
Tour the Antigua Cruise Port Terminal area at St John's. We were on the MSC Divina cruise ship docked at the Heritage Quay terminal along with the Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas. If you are looking for things to do other than shopping- we took a short taxi ride to visit the nearby Fort James beach (see our video here: ), then walked around the port area, which included the historic Redcliff Quay Cruise Pier where the Seven Seas Explorer and the Pullmantur Zenith were docked.
There are plenty of nice views out towards the cruise ships. It is also a lively scene with local Antiguan performers singing, dancing, and even doing the Limbo while on fire, and spitting fire, lol.
There were a ton of shops & restaurants/bars at port including Diamonds International (surprise suprise), Fred's Belgian Waffles & Ice Cream, Big Banana, St Johns Antigua Harbour View Bar & Cafe plus much more. There was even a casino (King's Casino).
As an added bonus, we included our cruise ship sail-away from Antigua video- enjoy!
This was from our December 2017 cruise aboard the MSC Divina.

Fort James Antigua
1739 Fort James.
Antigua and Barbuda Fort James
Fort James is a fort at the entrance to the harbour of St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. The fort was built to guard St. John's harbour and is one of the many forts built by the British in the 18th century. Fear of a French invasion prompted the construction. It is located on a headland overlooking the town northwesterly. A powder magazine, several cannons and the foundation of the fort's wall remain. The main attraction today is the excellent view of the surrounding harbor.
The fort is named after King James II of England. Work on the fort started in 1706, and most of the buildings were built in 1739. In 1773, the fort was armed with 36 guns, and had a barracks which accommodated 75 men. In the 19th century, a gun fired salutes at visiting warships, as well as signals at sunrise and sunset.

Trails lead up to Shirley Heights, a former military lookout with panoramic views.

Fort James Antigua | Things To See in Antigua
Fort James is a beach and a bay and a fort so it gets confusing, but it's all round about in the same area just outside of St Johns. It's perhaps the best closest Antigua Beach. On cruise ship day this makes for a pleasant area to explore on foot and grab a rum punch.
