Fort Charles - Port Royal, Jamaica - Sept. 2019
Home to many pirates, including the famed Captain Morgan, Port Royal was protected by Fort Charles, built by the British in 1655 to defend Jamaica from an attack from Spaniards. Heavily damaged in the 1692 earthquake, which sank two-thirds of Port Royal's land into the bay, the Fort was rebuilt in 1888. The rebuilt Fort was damaged again by an earthquake in 1907, sinking several of the Fort's buildings into the sand, including the Giddy House.
This video is an aerial tour of Fort Charles in anticipation of significant improvements to the area.

Rehabilitation of the Port Royal Ferry Pier
The #PortAuthorityJa has undertaken the rehabilitation of the old Port Royal Ferry Pier as a social project, with the aim of improving the functionality of the facility, enhancing commercial and social activities, and improving the overall aesthetics of the area.
This pier had been essential to the commercial and social activities of the town's residents, but it fell into a dilapidated state of disrepair over the years. Currently there is no proper facility for the docking of fishing boats in Port Royal, but this will be resolved with the PAJ's current rehabilitation work in progress.

Port Royal
I just got back from an interpretive guiding course I was teaching in Jamaica with Birds Caribbean. Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to do much trekking there, but I did manage to visit a historic site that has always intrigued and sparked my imagination: Port Royal, at the mouth of the Kingston Harbor. There is a direct connection between this once-infamous pirate haven and Panama, as it was the point from which the marauding fleets of English buccaneers departed to plunder the Spanish Main. The treasures came from Peru across the Panamanian jungles on their way to Spain, precisely on those very trails that we now follow on our jungle expeditions: the Camino Real and the Camino de Cruces. Once in Caribbean waters the fleets had to negotiate not only tropical storms but also the constant threat of attacks by pirates who made Port Royal their home. During this period the city was known as the Sodom of the West Indies where outlaws, pirates, and prostitutes ran the show, and the lewd and licentious activities formed the base of the economy.
As a case in point, Henry Morgan had his base of operation in Port Royal. Here he plotted the raids on Cartagena, Maracaibo, Panama City, and here he would return with the spoils. Eventually, he retired from piracy to pursue a political career becoming Governor of the city. He died a wealthy and respectable man in 1688, known then as Sir Henry Morgan, barely four years before the destruction of the city by a monstrous earthquake and the ensuing tsunami. The only military structure that survived the catastrophe was Fort Charles, which can be visited today and houses two small museums that tell the history of Port Royal prior and after the big shake.
The city was reconstructed and served as a naval station for the British Empire, from which Admiral Edward Vernon launched his attack on Portobelo, Panama, during the War of Jenkins' Ear, 1739, razing the town to the ground, which in turn forced Spain to end the legendary Portobelo Fairs. Thus the historical connection between Port Royal and Panama is one full of turmoil, destruction, and greed.
