Touring the Village of Nieuw Amsterdam and Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, Suriname
During my Commewijne plantation region tour in Suriname, we visited the Commewijne district capital of Nieuw Amsterdam, population 1,200. It’s located six miles northeast of national capital Paramaribo on the east bank of the Suriname River at its confluence with the Commewijne River. Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, built in the mid-1700s as a first line of defense against naval attacks on Paramaribo and the Commewijne plantations. The fort would later serve as Guyana’s main prison for long-term offenders until it was closed in 1982 and converted into the Amsterdam Openlucht (Open Air) Museum.

New York City - Nieuw Amsterdam
The settlement, outside of Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan Island in the New Netherland territory (1614--1664), was situated between 38 and 42 degrees latitude and was as a provincial extension of the Dutch Republic as of 1624. Situated on the strategic, fortifiable southern tip of the island of Manhattan, the fort was meant to defend the Dutch East India Company's fur trade operations in the North River (Hudson River). Fort Amsterdam was designated the capital of the province in 1625. To legally safeguard the settlers' investments, possessions and farms on Manhattan island, the Dutch negotiated the purchase of Manhattan from the Manahatta band of Lenape for 60 guilders worth of trade goods. After the signing of the Treaty of Westminster in November 1674, the city was relinquished to the English and the name reverted to New York. Suriname became an official Dutch possession in return.

Marienburg & Nieuw Amsterdam in Commewijne | Suriname
Een bezoek aan de Marienburg fabriek in Commewijne. Op deze plantage werden suikers en rum geproduceerd. Nu, sinds de sluiting in 1986, wordt het verlaten gebied voornamelijk overmeesterd door de natuur.
De voornamelijk Javanen die werkzaam waren zijn wettelijk nooit ontslagen en leven in de oude arbeidskrotten.
Verder een wandeling over de kade bij Nieuw Amsterdam.

In deze OpEenMissieVlogs neem ik jullie mee naar Fort Nieuw Amsterdam waar meneer Henk Kross meer verteld over de locatie waar we zijn. Om hier te komen zijn we vanaf Paramaribo begonnen te fietsen, hebben we een oversteek gemaakt met de boot om vervolgens aan de overkant verder te fietsen. Na afloop van ons bezoek op Fort Nieuw Amsterdam zijn we fietsend verder gegaan en in totaal hebben we deze dag wel 30km gefietst, gelukkig was het maar 32 graden ofzo. Eerlijk is eerlijk, nadat we ons waterpeil weer met liters water hadden aangevuld was het een leuke excursie om op terug te kijken, vooral omdat je zoveel hebt gezien onderweg. Verder was het bezoek aan Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, dankzij meneer Henk Kross, niet alleen mooi maar vooral heel leerzaam.
