Colonial City, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo, the Colonial Zone (Source: Insight Guides)
First founded in 1496 on the eastern bank of the Ozama River, it was moved across the river in 1502 after a hurricane destroyed the original wooden buildings. It flourished in the 16th century as the Spanish conquistadores used it as a base for their voyages of discovery and conquest, but an attack by Sir Francis Drake in 1586 nearly destroyed the city when his men pillaged and burned the buildings. Much of the old quarter has been carefully restored and preserved and is now a Unesco World Heritage Site, notable for having the first cathedral, palace, fortress, hospital, monastery, court and university to be built in the New World.

Santo Domingo de Guzmán, or just Santo Domingo, is the capital of the Dominican Republic and is its largest city. It is the oldest European city in the Americas where people have been living since it was founded at the end of the 15th century.
Santo Domingo, Ciudad Colonial (Source: Wikipedia)
Ciudad Colonial (Spanish for Colonial City) is the historic central neighborhood of Santo Domingo and the oldest permanent European settlement of the New World. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is colloquially known as Zona Colonial (Colonial Zone). The Ciudad Colonial is located on the west bank of the Ozama River, which bisects the city. It covers less than 5 square kilometers.
It is an important section of the city due to the high number of landmarks, including Alcázar de Colón, Fortaleza Ozama, Catedral Primada de America, and others.

Parque Colon is a main city square featuring a prominent Christopher Columbus statue bordered by the oldest cathedral in the Americas.
