#NSLighthouseProject: Lahave Lighthouse, at the Fort Point Museum, Lunenburg County.
The Lahave Lighthouse was first built in 1875 and served the area until 1954, when it was demolished & replaced by a skeletal tower.
The early lightkeepers at Fort Point lived in a dwelling attached to the light tower, but in 1940 a separate house was built. This structure remains standing today, and after the creation of the Lunenburg County Historical Society in 1969, it was converted into the Fort Point Museum.
In 1990, a small square pyramidal tower, similar in design to many throughout Nova Scotia, was built in memory of the 1875 La Have Lighthouse. As Fort Point Museum grew, a larger facility was needed, and a more substantial lighthouse, based on the original La Have Lighthouse, was added.

I'm celebrating Canada's 150th birthday by visiting all the national historic sites in Nova Scotia!
Today's video visits Fort Saint Marie de Grace site in Lahave NS, near Bridgewater. Currently there is the Fort Point Museum and a lighthouse with signage from the Lunenburg County Historical Society.

Fort Point Lighthouse and Park
A visit to Fort Point Lighthouse and Park, in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, on the River Mersey. Liverpool is a little piece of heaven on the South Shore, with plenty to see and do. A visit to the lighthouse is a must. In the summer months souvenirs, arts and crafts are sold from the shop within the lighthouse. Climb to the top to enjoy the view, sound the horn. Take in the many historical photographs inside, listen to the stories told by the lighthouse attendant.
Outside the lighthouse there are many storyboards giving an account of the area's history, including much about the famous privateers, pirates licensed by the Crown to plunder American shipping. How times have changed! At the time of this video, the plants were just beginning to come into their own. In the height of the summer the gardens are alive with roses and other flowers. Locals are friendly and chatty, always happy to welcome and engage visitors in conversation. Like all of the South Shore of Nova Scotia, it is never crowded. The park here is one of the best spots for a lazy picnic.

Drone Flight over Cape d'Or Lighthouse, Nova Scotia, Canada: #NSLighthouseProject
Filmed on a chilly day in March 2016 for our #NSLighthouseProject, experience the cliffs, rocky terrain, ocean and lighthouse at Cape d'Or, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
French explorer Samuel de Champlain named Cape d’Or (Cape of Gold) when he sailed by in 1607 and noticed glimmers of gold in the basalt cliffs; though the metal was copper rather than gold, the name stuck.
The first navigational aid on Cape d’Or was not a light, but rather a steam fog whistle, which was established in 1874. The Cape didn’t receive a light until 1922.
The present lighthouse, consisting of a one-story fog signal building with a light tower rising from one corner, was built in 1965, but became automated in 1989.

The LaHave Bakery on the Lighthouse Route (Rte 331) Nova Scotia about an hour drive from Halifax. It's also close to Riverport, Lunemberg and Mahone bay with a quick trip across LaHave River with an option and fun cable Ferry dropoff. This funky care, bakery eatery combines a lovely craft boutique and a library reading room and bookstore. The building dates from 1896 and was once the LaHave Outfitting Company, a ship's chandler and fish processing plant. It has many mysteries to tell!

#NSLighthouseProject: The 'River, Port & Island' Lighthouses, Nova Scotia, Canada via DJI drone
Filmed between Autumn 2015 & Winter 2016 during trips to Cumberland County, experience the landscape and lighthouses at Apple River, Port Greville and Spencer's Island.
The present Apple River Lighthouse dates from 1968, Two new keeper's dwellings were also provided for the keepers, and the old lighthouse and a dwelling were pushed over the bank and burned. However, after the fog signal was discontinued, the one-story building was torn down, leaving just the 10.5-meter tower, which has had its lantern room removed.
Port Greville Lighthouse was built in 1907. Known for shipbuilding, inflation in 1972 brought an end to this industry in Port Greville. Hopes were for shipbuilding to return after inflation, but the Groundhog Day gale of 1976 destroyed the shipyard. With shipbuilding gone, the Coast Guard deactivated the light, sawed it in half, trucked it to Sydney and displayed it at their college. But in 1998, the Coast Guard agreed to turn back the lighthouse for display at the Age of Sail Heritage Centre & Museum; it was thus cut in half again & trucked back to its home town of Port Greville.
Built in 1904, Spencer's Island Lighthouse was discontinued in 1987. However, a two-year effort resulted in the Spencer's Island Community Association acquiring the lighthouse from the government. In 2006, after major restorative work (thanks to local fundraising efforts), the light was reactivated in the tower.
