Fort Nepean is a former defensive facility occupying part of Point Nepean, Victoria, Australia. It was part of a network of fortifications, commanded from Fort Queenscliff, protecting the narrow entrance to Port Phillip.
Fortifications And Guns.
Former gun emplacements 2B (observation post) and 2A.
Fortifications and barracks were built on Point Nepean from 1873 and gun batteries were installed in 1886. By the 1890s Fort Nepean was known as Victoria's Gibraltar. The barracks housed a Company of the Royal Victoria Volunteer Artillery Regiment.
1878–1880
The first coastal defence guns on the site were four 80 pounder Rifled Muzzle Loading guns in two temporary sandbagged batteries. These were moved into more substantial earth emplacements from 1880.
1886–1890

Ten gun emplacements were constructed between 1886 and 1890 but not all had guns installed. By 1890 there were four 6 inch breach loading (BL) disappearing guns, two BL 9.2 inch (234 mm) Mk VI breech-loading 'counter bombardment' British Armstrong guns, a 4.7 inch quick firing (QF) gun and a QF 14 pounder. One of the former 80 pounder emplacements was used as an observation post and one new emplacement was used as an armourer's store.
Two of the same type of BL 9.2 inch (234 mm) Mk VI gun were installed at Fort Queenscliff. One each of the guns was installed at Ben Buckler Gun Battery, Signal Hill Battery, and Steel Point Battery in Sydney. The barrel of the Signal Hill gun is on display at the Royal Australian Artillery Museum at North Fort, North Head, in Sydney. The Ben Buckler gun has been recovered and is awaiting restoration.
1907–1915
From 1911 the fort was manned by the newly renamed Royal Australian Garrison Artillery and the Royal Australian Engineers. With war in Europe looming, longer range 6 inch Mk VII guns replaced the 9.2 inch guns. One of the 6 inch BL guns was removed and the 14 pounder was moved to Fort Queenscliff. The 4.7 inch QF gun was removed and the emplacement fitted with a searchlight, along with an engine house to generate electricity. The remaining gun emplacements were renumbered – the Mk VII guns were numbered A1 and B1, and the 6 inch BL guns numbered F1 and H1.
1939–1942

Light anti-aircraft guns were deployed at the fort in 1939. The remaining 6 inch BL guns were removed in 1940. The A1 and B1 emplacements were renumbered F1 and H1 respectively, and fitted with concrete hoods
The Borough of Queenscliff (Victoria) in the 1960s
Annie Olgilvie talks to us about the Borough of Queenscliffe in the 1960s. She describes how the main street of Queenscliff was filled with residences, guesthouses and shops sporting large verandahs on streets with blue stone-lined gutters. There was a hotel, service stations, butchers, a bank, a furniture shop and a large emporium called Eddie George’s. Annie describes how they would go surfing at Pt Lonsdale’s front and back beaches, skateboard down the streets and watch the football at Queenscliff Oval. Popular pastimes were to listen to the juke box at Hans & Mary’s milkbar or hang out at the Captain’s Cabin Café, both in Pt Lonsdale. At that time, people living in the Borough worked as fishermen, teachers, at the Fort, in shops, at the State Electricity Commission (SEC) or in the Council.

The Borough of Queenscliff (Victoria) in the 2000s
Chris Taylor moved to the Borough in the 2000s. In this video, he gives us an overview of what the Borough was like at that time. He describes how his weekends were spent surfing the back beach and running his children to and from cricket, basketball and football. Entertainment was al fresco dining at one of the many gorgeous Borough cafes, attending the vintage car rally, going to the local Sunday markets, swimming at Santa Casa beach and taking the kids to the Borough's hidden playgrounds. It is a time when Eddies Emporium leaves the town, the Queenscliff playspace is built and the marina development takes off.

Fort Denison, Sydney Harbour
A popular island on the harbour. You can't miss seeing it, it is right in front of the Opera House.
The island was used as a convict prison during the early days of Sydney's settlement. The island was then known as Pinchgut. In 1857 the entire area became a large fort, built to defend Sydney against Russian attack.
Today the island is managed by National Parks. There is a museum that you can visit just by catching the ferry, or you can take a complete tour of the fort and tower by taking the National Parks tour. There is a scheduled ferry service operated to Fort Denison by Matilda/Captain Cook every day of the week. The ferries depart from Circular Quay at wharf 6.
If you want to take a tour of the island and visit the tower, you need to purchase a ticket which includes the ferry transport 24 hours in advance from the Sydney Visitors Centre at Cadmans Cottage in The Rocks. The National Parks and Wildlife Service run a half-hour guided tour. The price includes the ferry trip to the island.
Fort Denison has a nice cafe, under a white marquee with a view facing away from the Opera House to the northern side of the Harbour. It serves brunch as part of the tour. It is open for lunch, and serves modern Australian cuisine, of the big plate small fancy serves style. The location is unique. There s is a kids menu, which is quite necessary, given the nature of the food and presentation.

Located at the very end of the peninsula, #FortNepean enables you to step into the boots of the soldiers once posted there. Fort Nepean was a critical part of Victoria’s defences from the 1880s until 1945. It was the largest and most heavily armed installation in the network of #fortifications around the entrance to #PortPhillip, and today remains an outstanding example of the evolution of gun technology and Australia’s early defence strategies. The first shot of the British Empire in #WWI and the first Australian shots of #WorldWarll were fired from Fort Nepean, earning its entry in military history. These battlements were modified and used right up until the end of World War II.
