EL RENO — Fort Reno is a slice of Western history just outside of Oklahoma City. The U.S. Government commissioned Fort Reno in 1874, the same year that George Custer’s expedition confirmed reports of gold in the Black Hills, and used the fort as a military post until just after World War II. It was a key outpost during the Indian wars and a prisoner of war camp during World War II. Its location along Route 66 helped make it a military prisoner-of-war camp during World War II.
Fort Reno policed and enforced the government’s aims for the surrounding area. The fort provided support for its transition from Indian Territory to the State of Oklahoma.
Today, visitors can find exhibits about the fort's history and a cemetery where numerous U.S. Calvary members are buried.

El Reno, Oklahoma
El Reno is a city in and county seat of Canadian County, Oklahoma, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 16,729. The city was begun shortly after the 1889 land rush and named for the nearby Fort Reno. It is located in the central part of the state, approximately west of downtown Oklahoma City, and is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was originally located about five miles (8 km) north of its present location, on the banks of the North Canadian river, bearing the name Reno City, which caused its mail to get mixed up with mail for Reno, Nevada. After the second time the town flooded, it was moved to its present location and changed its name to El Reno. This word is Spanish for the reindeer.
Historic Fort Reno was built in 1874, and first commanded by General Philip Sheridan. He named it in honor of his friend, Gen. Jesse L. Reno, who was killed in the Civil War. The grounds of the old fort became home to a research laboratory for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1948. The laboratory studies environmentally sustainable forage and livestock production, contributing to preservation of the great plains of North America.
El Reno is located on the 98th Meridian, which allowed the eastern side to be opened to non-Indian settlement in the Land Run of 1889. The western side was opened in the 1892 opening of the Cheyenne and Arapaho lands. It was subsequently selected as the land district office for the 1901 land lottery drawings.
During WWII, Fort Reno, about north west of El Reno, was the site of a prisoner of war camp, and today contains a P.O.W. cemetery, with stones bearing the names of German and Italian prisoners who died there.

Historic 2.6 Mile Wide EF3 Tornado - El Reno, OK May 31st, 2013
*Not For Broadcast* Prior to this historic 2.6 mile wide tornado touching down, we spent the majority of the day in El Reno, OK waiting for supercell thunderstorm initiation at a Conoco gas station. Many other chasers were there watching and waiting as well, and we all chatted about the forecast, as we sweltered under the extremely hot and humid conditions. You just knew that something big was going to happen later that day. We all felt it. I didn't know it at the time, but this would end up being one of the most stressful chases I have ever been involved with. Nothing about this day was fun to be honest. After some repositioning, Dave Lewison and I decided to pull off Highway 81 just south of the I-40 and watch as the storm approached. Visibility was terrible as a ton of precipitation was shrouding what was in fact a massive tornado taking shape just to our west. It was only after bumping up the contrast on our video upon getting home that the tornado became clearly visible as it approached Highway 81. At the time however we could barely make it out, and thought that what we were looking at was just a very large rain shaft. Nope, the entire thing was the tornado. Once the tornado started becoming visible, Dave and I decided to bail south on the 81 to get out of it's path since we know noticed a distinct shift towards the southeast. We estimated at the time that we had about 5 or 6 minutes of lead time, but after careful analysis on Dave's part through our GPS logs and NWS survey's we realized that we actually had less than 2 minutes lead time before the tornado would have cut us off as we headed south on the 81. Needless to say I'm kind of glad we didn't know that at the time. Another problem we encountered traffic congestion as we headed south as many locals took to the roads, either hoping for a look, or attempting to get out of the storms path. Thankfully though, we made it south of the circulation, but by this time, we couldn't see anything but murk to our north as the circulation passed over highway 81. It was at this time the tornado rapidly ballooned in size and shifted northward at a high rate of speed. We continued south and ended up in Chickasha, OK where upon approaching the city, we encountered another traffic jam due to all the evacuation traffic from the OKC Metro.
According to the NWS, this tornado holds the record for being the largest in recorded history. 2.6 miles wide according to the damage survey. I have included the official NWS text below:
