Neben einem Rundgang durch die kleine und quirlige Inselhauptstadt „St.George‘s“ , bietet sich eine bei 30 Grad durchaus beschwerlichen „Wanderung“ auf den Hausberg der Stadt an von dem aus eine Festung die Einwohner bewacht.
Als Ausgleich bietet die Insel aber auch einige sehr schöne Strände die vom Schiff aus mit dem Wassertaxi leicht zu erreichen sind. Neben der bekannten „Grand Anse“ Bucht findet sich etwas weiter an der Küste entlang auch die „Mourne Rouge Bay“ die wir uns für einen ruhigen Strandtag ausgesucht hatten…

Grenada, es una pequeña nación conformada por tres islas: Carriacou, Pequeña Martinica y Grenada, la más grande de ellas. Su capital es St George´s, una bonita población situada en un puerto natural (foto 1). De lejos destaca un anillo de iglesias en la ciudad y de fortalezas sobre las montañas que la dominan, aunque ni unas ni otras están en muy buen estado de conservación (foto 2). Las casas georgianas de piedra, y las más modernas de hormigón se apiñan con sus tejados rojos unas y con tejados de zinc otras (foto 3). La ciudad está dividida en dos partes : Carenage con su puerto interior para pequeñas embarcaciones, y la Explanade, que es la zona donde atracan los cruceros, y que dispone de una pequeña zona peatonal bien limpia y cuidada (foto 4). Por esta zona se encuentran los mercados (foto 5), la estación de autobuses, y todos los vendedores ambulantes del mundo. Ambas partes de la ciudad, se unen atravesando el túnel Sendall, que construido en el siglo XIX, ha quedado definitivamente obsoleto para el paso de vehículos y personas (foto 6)...

Isn’t that the place that the US invaded in the ‘80s? Didn’t it get munched by a hurricane a few years ago? Grenada is used to bad press. But like a fighter on the ropes, it’s come out swinging and has reinvented itself as the next big thing. The one big island and two small ones plonked in the sea in the southeast corner of the Caribbean are undiscovered and rarely visited.
Grenada Island is elliptically shaped and alive with a rainforested interior. Underrated beaches line the coast and sublime scuba diving is on offer just below the surface. St George’s, the largest town, has one of the most picturesque waterfronts in all of the Caribbean. Stone buildings, forts from a forgotten time and houses of all colors meld into a hilly buffet of urban aesthetics. Friendly, welcoming locals go about their lives and are happy to include you in the process. Carriacou is a step back in time. With a cadence a notch or two slower then Grenada Island, this petite isle is a relaxed affair where endearing locals and an eclectic village life is added to sublime scenery. And if that sounds too busy, head over to Petit Martinique where even less happens – and the locals like it that way.
Yes, Grenada did get invaded by Uncle Sam, but that’s old news. And yes, a hurricane obliterated much of the island in 2004, but they’ve rebuilt. Life moves on, and so has Grenada.

Grenada - Bianca C
On Sunday October 22, 1961, the Bianca C docked off Grenada when an explosion occurred in the engine room in the early hours of the morning. One crewman died immediately, and eight others were injured. As fires broke out, approximately 700 passengers and crew scrambled to abandon the ship while Grenadian fishermen and boat owners, awakened by the noise of the explosion, near the harbor of St. George's rushed to help. Survivors were taken to the capital, where makeshift hospitals were hastily established to provide shelter and food. Because Grenada did not have the equipment to quench such a large fire, a call for help was sent and was received by the British frigate HMS Londonderry at Puerto Rico. It took two days for the Londonderry to arrive, and by that time the Bianca C had begun to sink. The burning ship was in the main anchorage and would block the harbor if it sank there, so a Londonderry boarding party boarded the flaming ship to attach a towline. The anchor lines of the Bianca C were burned, and today the anchors are still at the mouth of the St. George's harbor. Meanwhile, the Londonderry moved to tow the Bianca C, but the latter ship was listing to port. Thousands of Grenadians watched from the mountains as the tow progressed for six hours, but the Bianca C. had only moved three miles (5 km) when a squall started and the towline broke. The Bianca C sank quickly into 165 feet (50 m) of water, about a mile from the popular tourist beach at Grand Anse.

Grenada, offiziell Staat Grenada (englisch State of Grenada), ist ein Inselstaat und der Name einer hierzu gehörigen Insel der Kleinen Antillen, die geographisch zu den Inseln über dem Winde in der Karibischen See gehört. Der Inselstaat bildet einen eigenständigen Mitgliedstaat des Commonwealth of Nations.
Die Insel liegt zwischen der Karibik und dem Atlantischen Ozean, etwa 200 Kilometer nordöstlich der Küste Venezuelas und südlich von Saint Vincent und den Grenadinen.
Der Staat besteht aus mehreren Inseln der Inselgruppe der Grenadinen, einem Teilarchipel der kleinen Antillen, von denen die Insel Grenada selbst die größte ist; kleinere Inseln sind Carriacou, Petite Martinique, Ronde Island, Caille Island, Diamond Island, Large Island, Saline Island, Les Tantes und Frigate Island. Der nördlich angrenzende Teil der Grenadinen gehört zum Nachbarstaat St. Vincent und die Grenadinen. Der Großteil der Bevölkerung lebt auf der Hauptinsel Grenada, wo auch die Hauptstadt St. George’s liegt.
St. George’s liegt an den Hängen rund um eine natürliche hufeisenförmige Hafenbucht und hat ein koloniales Stadtbild, das durch die französischen und britischen Kolonisten geprägt wurde. Auf den Hügeln, die die Stadt landseitig umgeben, gibt es drei Forts: Fort George (das Älteste), Fort Matthew (das Größte) und Fort Frederick (das am höchsten gelegene).
St. George’s wurde im Jahr 1650 als Fort Royal durch die Franzosen gegründet. In den Kolonialkriegen am Ende des 17. und im 18. Jahrhundert wurde die Siedlung 1675 von holländischen Piraten geplündert und wechselte zwischen Frankreich und England (bzw. ab 1707 Großbritannien) mehrfach den Besitzer. Erst 1783 wurde St. George’s – wie Grenada insgesamt – infolge des Friedens von Paris endgültig britisch.

This weekend, Maggie and I went into the town of St. George's and visited Fort George. It is where Prime Minister Maurice Bishop was assassinated. It was destroyed during Hurricane Ivan, but you can still see the tunnels and get great views.
