Ghana - Fort Santo Antonio in Axim
Yet another fort along the Ghana’s Gold Coast - Fort Santo António was built by the Portuguese in 1515, later captured by the Dutch in 1642, to eventually become British in 1872. Unlike other forts, this one is though to haven’t been used a slave trading post but rather as an entry point to the Dutch Africa and an military outpost against the British and locals. This fort is totally tourist-free and you get a spectacular panorama of fishing boats and pounding waves along the coast.

Fort Sao Jago da Mina
A small Portuguese chapel dedicated to Saint Jago, had previously stood where c (also known as Fort Coenraadsburg) now sits on a high hill opposite St. George’s Castle (Elmina Castle), in the Central Region of Ghana. This fort is a good illustration of a people learning from their history. In 1637, the Dutch installed heavy guns on the hill from where they had barraged the weakest side of Portuguese-controlled St. George’s Castle, forcing its surrender

Good Morning Ghana - Walking From The Ankobra Beach Resort - To Axim And Castle - Ghana Slave Trade
We wished that we had more time to explore the area in Axim and to have a few more days just to relax at the Ankobra Beach Resort:
That said, on our first and only morning in Axim we got up early and walked along the beach to get to Axim. Beautiful sandy beaches and coconut trees as far you can see.
Once we arrived in town, walked right through the center of Axim and went straight to the Axim Castle. The last slave trade castle we visited during our time in Ghana. And after visiting Cape Coast, we can tell you... skip the castle there and go to Axim or Elmina. The Cape Coast Castle is overrun with visitors and seems stressful and pleasant.
We will be writing about Axim, Ankobra Beach Resort and the Castle soon our Ghana Travel Blog:

Usher Fort (Accra)
Usher Fort was built by the Dutch in 1642. Ten years later it was taken by the French and named Fort Crevecoeur, then passed through the hands of the Dutch and finally the British who rebuilt it in 1868.
When I shot this video some years ago I had heard that UNESCO had an interest in protecting this historic site. Currently I do not no the current state of affairs regarding this historic site. This site like many others I have observed in the African Diaspora has historical significance of extreme importance.
The Fort William Lighthouse in Cape Coast - Perfect Right Before Sunset - Ghana Travel Blog
By the time we arrived in Cape Coast, we've visited the majority of slave trade castles along the coast of Ghana (Osu, Axim, Elmina) and decided to skip the Cape Coast castle. The castle in Cape Coast is on the path of day trip tours from Accra, it's overrun with people and people outside of the castle waiting for tourists are extremely pushy! SKIP!
But we can really recommend you to visit the Fort William Lighthouse, especially right before sunset. It's a little fort with a lighthouse on top where this guy lives, letting visitors in for a little tour. The views from up there are just breathtaking and gives you a great sense of Cape Coast.
We're going to write more about the Fort William Lighthouse in Cape Coast on our Ghana Travel Blog:
