Fort Klapperkop, Pretoria, South Africa
#south africa #johannesburg #pretoria South Africa Travel. Exploring Fort Klapperkop
Fort Klapperkop, like Fort Schanskop, is situated inside a nature reserve. The fort was the third fort of four to be completed after the Jameson raid (1895 - 1896), before the Anglo-Boer War (1899 – 1902), to protect Pretoria.
Today the fort is a national monument.

It commemorates the epic exodus by disillusioned Boers from the Cape into the interior, which laid the foundation for the borders of present day South Africa.
In 1834 slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire. This was highly unpopular with the Boers and became the focal issue of greater disaffection.
In what has come to be known as the Great Trek, thousands of Boers began migrating from the Cape in late 1835. Beyond the border they fanned out, with most choosing to continue either into the central interior or north-east into present day KwaZulu-Natal.
Fort Wonderboomport, Pretoria
Several months back my friend Adebayo Okeowo and I headed out to Pretoria to film what was supposed to be the start of a cool project. He's the one who filmed this really amazing video! While the project didn't take off, I still recommend that you add this cool fort to your list of places to visit. This is one of four forts built during the Anglo-Boer war, so they could protect themselves against British invasion. The views of the city from the fort are incredible! You have to hike to get to the fort, but I promise it's well worth the effort! I wrote a blog post about how you can plan your trip there. You can find the post here:

Revisiting Fort Schanskop - 20 years later
Fort Schanskop just outside Pretoria was seiged and Willem Ratte arrested, alleging that Afrikaner rights would be eroded in the new democracy. Talk Radio 702's David O'Sullivan goes back to Pretoria 20 years later.
Fort Klapperklop, Pretoria, 2000
This old fort has many guns on display. The panels show the names of men from more modern actions.
Klapperklop was the third of four forts built around Pretoria by the Government of the South African Republic after the Jameson Raid. It was built in 1897 at a cost of £45,000 and was occupied on the 18th January 1898. The Fort's Creusot guns (Long Toms) were removed during the war of 1899-1902 for use by the Republican's forces in Natal and the Transvaal.

Fort Klapperkop Museum - Pretoria
The Pretoria Forts consists of four forts built by the government of the South African Republic (ZAR) just before the outbreak of the Second Anglo-Boer War around their capital of Pretoria.
Klapperkop, the name of the hill where the fort is located is derived from the Afrikaans name for Strychnos pungens, a tree that grow natively on the hills in the region.[8]
This fort was constructed at a total cost of GBP £50,000. It was handed over to the Government on 18 January 1898. It was supplied with a paraffin engine powered generator for electricity, a telephone and telegraphic links. Running water was supplied from a pump station in the Fountains Valley which was shared with the nearby Fort Schanskop.
Unlike the other forts in the surrounding area, the design incorporated a moat as well as a drawbridge. The moat was never filled with water.
Fort Klapperkop was armed with a 155mm Creusot gun (Long Tom), a 37 mm Maxim-Nordenfeldt cannon, three Martini-Henry hand-maxims and a 65 mm Krupp Mountain Gun.
In January 1899 the fort was manned by 17 troops. In July 1899 the number of troops was increased to 30. By end October 1899, only 16 troops were still stationed at Fort Klapperkop. As with the other forts, men and armament were gradually withdrawn and sent elsewhere during the course of the war.
It is said: Never a shot in anger was fired from this fort.
The area is declared a military museum. On 31 May 1979 the South African Defence Force Memorial was unveiled at Fort Klapperkop. It includes a statue of a soldier holding a R1 rifle, in memory of all members of the South African Defence Force who lost their lives serving their country. The individuals who have lost their lives are honoured with an inscription on a number of marble plaques mounted around the statue.[9] Members who have died in operations as a result of enemy action are indicated with an asterix (*) next to their names.
Fort Klapperkop is a Gauteng provincial heritage site.[10]
The City of Tshwane has recently identified Fort Klapperkop as the new location where the parliament of South Africa will be built. During the State of Nation Address in 2016, President Zuma has indicated that parliament may finally move from Cape Town to Pretoria. This move will avoid the situation where the country is maintaining two capitals, Pretoria as the administrative and Cape Town as the Legislative Capital. This will also assist the state in cutting the expenditures of Cabinet Ministers and MPs who frequently have to travel between Pretoria and Cape Town, two houses in both Cape Town and Pretoria and two cars in both cities. Less travelling will also means that Cabinet Ministers will have more productive time.
