Day 6 - Fort Sewall, Fort Beach and Lovis Cove - Marblehead, MA Bryan and Amy Ruocco 7815769284
Fort Sewall, located at Gale’s Head, the northeastern point of the main Marblehead peninsula is a historic coastal fortification that was established in 1644. Rebuilt in 1775 during the American Revolution, Fort Sewall is one of the oldest English fortifications in the U.S. Just after the American Revolution, it was taken over by the federal government. During the Civil War, MA troops were garrisoned at Fort Sewall and a few Confederate prisoners of war were held there.
In 1922, the fort was turned over to the Town of Marblehead and today it serves as a public park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Just south of Fort Sewall, Fort Beach and Lovis Cove can be found, which has also been dubbed “Screaming Woman’s Beach” due to the folklore associated with it. The story goes that sometime in the 1600s, pirates captured an English ship crossing the Atlantic. They slaughtered all of the passengers and crew except for one particularly striking woman. The pirates proceeded to rob her of all of her valuables with the exception of her rings that they could remove from her fingers. As they approached the tiny village of Marblehead, they took the woman ashore and cut off all of her fingers to get to the rings and then beat her to death. Meanwhile, the Marblehead town’s women and children, unable to help with their husbands off to sea, listened to the woman’s screams and pleas for mercy. When the screams stopped and the pirates retreated, the residents came to the beach only to find the poor woman dead. They story goes that she was buried right where the incident occurred and on certain evenings you can hear her screams over the crashing waves.

Marblehead Massachusetts USA 2013
The video includes video and still photos from Historic Marblehead Massachusetts in the USA. This is a very quaint New England town which unfolds like a history book. There are the historic buildings, distinguished ancestors, parks, forts, an old burial ground, churches, yacht club, sailing and many fine stores. It was a very enjoyable day, which was started at Abbot Hall followed by lunch at The Muffin Shop. While touring the Old Burial Hill, we were intrigued by the headstone art that was carved on many of the Headstones and are included herein. If you always wanted to visit a historic New England town by the sea, but never did, sit back and enjoy.

Part of the Glover's Marblehead Regiment Encampment at Fort Sewell, there was a mock battle of re-enactors in 18th century costume, in Barnegat on Gashouse Beach and Gerry Island. These are militia firing at the British Regulars who rowed out to Gerry Island.

Day 7 - Marblehead Harbor Marblehead, MA - Bryan and Amy Ruocco 781.576.9284
Marblehead Harbor boasts one of the finest displays of sailing craft anywhere. Over the years the harbor has been both the starting and finishing port for numerous international races. An annual race between Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Marblehead, which began in 1905, continues to this day. And the yearly mid-summer Marblehead Race Week competition, which dates back to 1889, still attracts yachtsmen from around the world.
In 1814, Marblehead mariners and its famed harbor once came to the rescue as the vessel USS Constitution was being pursued by two British frigates. Many of the crewmen were from Marblehead and, being familiar with the rocky waters, piloted the Constitution into the protection of Marblehead Harbor. The British, with no charts of the rocks and channels and seeing cannons being readied at Fort Sewall at the mouth of the Harbor, retreated. In 1997 the USS Constitution, in celebration of its 200th birthday, set sail again under its own power for the first time in 116 years. Its destination: the same Marblehead Harbor that protected her in 1814. (Excerpt Read from Marblehead.org)
