Here is a quick video on the St Angelos Fort, where the history of Kannur sleeps. Built in the year AD 1505 by the first Portuguese viceroy in India, Dom Francisco de Almeida, the Fort St Angelo is located at a distance of 3.2 Km for the Kannur Railway Station and faces the Arabian Sea.
The Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese in 1663. They modernised the fort and built the bastions Hollandia, Zeelandia and Frieslandia that are the major features of the present structure. The original Portuguese fort was pulled down later. The Dutch sold the fort to king Ali Raja of Arakkal in 1772. In 1790 the British seized it and used it as their chief military station in Malabar until 1947.
The fort is in the Cannanore Cantonment area. It is fairly well preserved as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

കണ്ണൂർ ടൗണിൽ നിന്നും 3 കിലോമീറ്റര് അകലെ കന്റോൺമെന്റ് നു അടുത്തായി ബർണശ്ശേരി ഇൽ അറബിക്കടലിനു അഭിമുഖമായി പൂർണ്ണമായും ചെങ്കല്ലിൽ പണിത കോട്ടയാണ് സെന്റ് ആഞ്ചലോസ് കോട്ട എന്നുപേരുള്ള കണ്ണൂർ കോട്ട സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഫ്രാൻസിസ്കോ ഡെ അൽമേഡ എന്ന പോർച്ചുഗീസ്കാരനാണ് ഈ കോട്ടയുടെ നിർമ്മാണം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയത്. പോർച്ചുഗീസ്‌കാർക്കു ശേഷം ഡച്ചുകാരും അതിനുശേഷം ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരും കോട്ട ഭരിച്ചു. പോർച്ചുഗീസ്കാരും ഡച്ച്കാരും കച്ചവട അവ്വശ്യങ്ങൾക്കു കോട്ട ഉപയോഗിച്ചപ്പോൾ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ സൈനിക താവളം ആയിട്ടാണ് കോട്ടയെ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. ആർക്കിയോളോജിക്കൽ സർവ്വേ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ യുടെ കീഴിൽ വളരെ നന്നായിട്ടാണ് കോട്ട പരിപാലിച്ചു പോരുന്നത്.....കണ്ണൂർ കോട്ടയുടെ മുഴുവൻ ചരിത്രവും ഈ വിഡിയോയിൽ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് .

Nicole and I visited our good friend Sgt. Gokulan while he was working at St. Angelo Fort located in Kannur India, just a short tuk tuk drive away. I did a walk around video, and we spent some time looking at a few things with the good Sgt. A great day with the weather being its usual hot self, making way for a good visit to a great seaside attraction. A five hundred year old fort built with laterite stones by Portuguese. Built in 1505, the fort went into the hands of different powers including the local rulers of Arrakkal Family of Kannur. Today this bastioned fort exist as an archeological monument under the Archeological survey of India. Some years back thousands of cannonballs were discovered within the fort premises. A must visit place if you are visiting North Kerala or Kannur.

St. Angelo's Fort was built in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India and is on the Arabian sea coast about 2km from Kannur town. It was attacked in vain by the local Indian ruler Zamorin and kolathiri in the Siege of Cannanore (1507).
Fort at KannurOn August 1509 Almeida, refusing to recognize Afonso de Albuquerque's as the new Portuguese governor to supersede himself, arrested him in this fortress after having fought the naval Battle of Diu. Afonso de Albuquerque was released after six months' confinement, and become governor on the arrival of the grand-marshal of Portugal with a large fleet, in October 1509.[1]
