Luxembourg City, Luxembourg ???????? - City Break
Luxembourg City is not the first place that springs to mind when you think of a European city break but take a visit and it might surprise you! ????
Luxembourg is one of Europe's smallest countries but there's surprisingly lots to do! We visited in January when Luxembourg City was covered in snow, making it look incredibly beautiful. It's perfect for a city break!
Luxembourg City is located near to the airport and is easy to get to. Accommodation is reasonable and prices are comparable to other nearby European countries.
There's surprisingly lots to do in Luxembourg City, despite its size. It has a number of museums including the Musée national d’histoire et d’art Luxembourg, Musée national d'histoire naturelle and Musée Dräi Eechelen, located in Fort Thungen. Other sights include the Grand Ducal Palace and Casemates du Bock.
A Luxembourg City Break is perfect for a weekend of sightseeing. There's really nice restaurants and bars too. It's easy to get to from most of Europe, with regular flights and trains from neighbouring countries. It's just 2 hours from Paris on the TGV.

Luxembourg City travel vlog! Underground tunnels, fortress walls, and a 600-year-old fun fair!
I've spent a lot of time in Europe but I've never had a chance to visit Luxembourg. Luckily, I got to take my first ever trip there and visit the capital, Luxembourg City. I really wasn't sure what to expect coming in, since it get a lot less attention than some of it's bigger and more tourist-heavy neighbors. But I had an amazing time while I was there and am so glad I went. I got to do so many great things while I was there like going to a nearly 700-year-old fair (Schueberfouer), eating lots of great Luxembourgish food, riding a big Ferris Wheel, exploring Ville Haute, seeing all of the old fortress walls and fortifications, relaxing in Place D'Armes, seeing the Golden Lady on the Monument of Remembrance, having Notre-Dame Cathedral all to myself, just missing a chance to tour the Grand Ducal Palace, popping into St. Michael's Church, exploring the network of tunnels that make up the Casemates du Bock, learning about the Fortress of Luxembourg, walking down into the Lower City neighbourhoods like Grund and Clausen, getting amazing picture-perfect views of the city, taking elevators between the low and high city neighborhoods, seeing the more modern Kirchberg area, checking out the MUDAM Museum of Modern Art, climbing to the top of Fort Thungen, feeling like I was in a small town in Pfaffenthal, riding up to Ville Haute in a glass elevator, and so much more.
It was a fantastic trip and I got to see and do and eat so much. I'm so glad I went and will definitely recommend it to my friends.
After leaving Luxembourg City I headed to Saarland, Germany - check out my video:

Fort Thüngen in Luxembourg, world heritage
Fort Thüngen is an eighteenth century fort, of which only three towers remained. A plan was devised to restore the fort and to add a new museum for modern art. The famous architect Joh Ming Pei was commissioned to design the new museum. After many discussions and changes the world heritage committee finally approved the plans. During the building of the new museum, the run-down fort could be rebuilt on the basis of original drawings. The division between old and new is clearly visible and became a Luxembourg style.
Fort Thüngen conceived and built by the Austrian fort commander Baron Freiherr von Thüngen, later fortified by Vauban and made Extra Large by the Prussians, will spend its days at the Musée de la Forteresse and at the Grand-Duc Jean Museum of Modern Art.
The 26-part tv-series HERITAGE SITES of the WORLD is available in Dutch and English.

Luxembourg City, Luxembourg -- A Visual Tour
I went to Luxembourg in 2000, I think. This video is a few years old and shows the eastern part of Luxembourg City down in the valley. I love this place, it's expensive and the people aren't as friendly as the Dutch, but being in Luxembourg City is like being in a spy-thriller or a fairy-tale. The place is loaded with history and every turn is a new view of something spectacular.

The Drax Files: World Makers [Episode 33: Luxembourg 1867]
Of course every museum should have something like this says Pit Vinandy, referring to the virtual reality component at Fort Thüngen Museum and the City Museum of Luxembourg.
There, his team has implemented an immersive way to connect to local history, a method to time travel and experience culture and society as it was hundreds of years ago.
With the help of two Oculus Rift VR headsets and 10 computers, visitors can role-play 1867, a crucial year not only for tiny Luxembourg: sandwiched between rivals Germany and France, the little country became known due to the Luxembourg crises, itself a turning point for the whole of Europe at the time and the burning question at the time resonates today: will people of this multi-cultural continent grow closer together and overcome their differences or will the leaders of countries perpetually in conflict continue to let armed response rein supreme?
Pit Vinandy and team have created a digital simulation of the Fort Thüngen and the Pfaffenthal region of Luxembourg City inside the virtual world of Second Life.
Accessible from all over the world, at all hours of the day, it quickly became home to a passionate international role-playing community, making the digital structures come alive and truly vibrant.
Will it replace traditional teaching of history? It certainly won't says Pit. The goal, he explains, is to enable learning history in a playful way, connecting to the inner child that with wide eyed curiosity and free of intellectual restraint simply revels in the joy of exploring the world, no matter if physically real or simply emotionally resonating.
