Fort Wetherill Jamestown Rhode Island ~ Abandoned old Fort ~ Fort Wetherill State Park
Yesterday (12/27/18) My Husband and I headed down to Jamestown Rhode Island to go exploring Fort Wetherill. We have never been here before. We didn't realize that there are two separate sections for the Fort.
I wish we brought a strong flashlight. All I had was my Iphone flashlight. We could had explored a lot more if we had a bright flashlight. We had a lot of fun. Its a shame that the fort is covered with Graffiti.
We plan to go back again with a flashlight.
If you plan a trip to Jamestown RI check out the Fort at Wetherill State Park.
Fort Wetherill is a former coast artillery fort that occupies the southern portion of the eastern tip of Conanicut Island in Jamestown, Rhode Island. It sits atop high granite cliffs, overlooking the entrance to Narragansett Bay. Fort Dumpling from the American Revolutionary War occupied the site until it was built over by Fort Wetherill. Wetherill was deactivated and turned over to the State of Rhode Island after World War II and is now operated as Fort Wetherill State Park, a 51-acre (210,000 m2) reservation managed by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

ABANDONED MILITARY BASE - Fort Wetherill in Jamestown , Rhode Island
Fort Weterill is an abandoned naval fort on the cliffs of Jamestown Rhode Island. Originally known as Fort Dumpling during the American Revolution, Fort Wetherill was used for coastal defense during World War I and World War II. The fort was abandoned by the United State Military in 1946 after it was no longer needed. In 1972, the state of Rhode Island acquired the fort and turned it into a state park.
Come along and join us as we check out this abandoned naval fort hidden in the woods!

Wetherill was deactivated and turned over to the State of Rhode Island after World War II and is now operated as Fort Wetherill State Park, a 51-acre reservation managed by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.
During World War I, the fort was garrisoned by five companies of the Rhode Island National Guard. After the war, Fort Wetherill reverted to caretaker status, with only a single Coast Artillery sergeant assigned to watch over it and other nearby facilities. Fort Wetherill was reactivated by the U.S. Army in September 1940 as a major part of the Harbor Defenses of Narragansett Bay. The 10th Coast Artillery Regiment of the Regular Army also garrisoned forts in Rhode Island 1924-45.
The fort also functioned in the year before World War II as a military training facility, and late in the war as a training center for German prisoners of war. However, the big guns of the Endicott era were mostly scrapped by 1943, as Fort Wetherill was superseded by new defenses centered on Fort Greene and Fort Church. In 1946, the U.S. military ceased operations at Fort Wetherill, and the site remained abandoned for the quarter century that followed.

Large Hidden Waterfall in Rhode Island!
Derek Deek Diedricksen treks to Greenville, Rhode Island to return to a little know abandoned/unused mill waterfall. This waterfall, a short distance in the wood from a convenient parking lot, has a drop of over ten feet, and makes for some great, free, exploration along Route 44- a Rhode Island cut-through also loaded with antique shops, old abandoned buildings, and some good restaurants.
If visiting, use caution while crossing the thin metal bridge to get to the falls, and be discrete, as I don't know if this spot is really allowed to be visited. I HAVE heard talk from locals that they are discussing opening up this area and making it a little park, but that could just be hearsay. If you visit, be respectful, safe, and keep the area clean- please.
Spooky Rhode Island
Take this virtual tour of some of Rhode Island's most haunted attractions and then visit them for yourself... if you dare!

Beautiful Place #92 Fort Wetherill State Park Rhode Island
via YouTube Capture
I love this park especially because of the surprisingly steep cliffs . You have the vandalized fort, Narragansett Bay, lots of interesting calls in trails to explore if you have not been to the state park in Rhode Island you got to seek it out trust me you'll be thanking me. So I know I film a lot of water related stuff that's just because I'm fascinated by the mystery of water if you will and it's ability to adapt transform and over power.
Obviously when I'm exploring different parts of the country they'll be other things that I will be exploring like minds, ghost towns, desert and the such. But this part of the country snd all the way down there to the southern states I will be seeking out a lot of beautiful places that have water . At the end of the day A beautiful place is a beautiful place.
Follow me as I travel north America in my vintage camper van hunting down beautiful places. Buckle up for the ultimate road trip adventure hosted by yours truly.
